E. ELCHELBERGER Sept, 26, 1950 PRESS IRON HOLDER Filed April 27, 194e FIGJ.
INVENTOR Patented Sept. 26, 1950 PRESS IRON HOLDER Edward Eichelberger, St. Louis, Mo., assignor to Safety Household Appliance Corporation, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application April 27, 1946, Serial No. 665,542
This invention relates to improvements in a press iron holder and more particularly to a device for attachment to an ironing board, so that the pressing iron used in pressing the clotheson said board may be supported adjacent to but not directly on the ironing surface of said board.
One of theimportant objects of this invention is to so construct a device of the kind described that there need be no overheating or burning of the ironing board or its cloth cover.
Another object of my invention is to so construct an iron holder of the kind described that the same will always be readily available for use when needed, inasmuch as it is mounted on said ironing board, and yet may be rapidly and readily shifted outiof the way to inoperative position when the ironing is done, remaining mounted on saidboard in its inoperative position as well as in operative position. d
An addedobject of my invention is to so construct an iron holder of the kind set forth, that it will be movable pivotally and slidably relative to the securing bracket, and be reversible end for end when actuated from its normal to its inoperative position, and vice versa, and be rmly interlocked with said bracket in either position.
Further objects of the invention herein described are to so :construct an attachment for an ironing board, that will be neat and simple in construction and operation, of but few parts, be relatively economical to make, sturdy, and which will be otherwise satisfactory and efficient for use wherever deemed applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be ob vious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, as will be more clearly pointed out in the claims and disclosure herein given.
` To this end, my invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts herein shown and described, as will be more clearly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, whe-rein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the improved devioce, in operative position attachedto one end of an ironing'board;
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section through the same, taken substantially along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; `Figure 3 is another vertical cross sectional 3 Claims. (Cl. 38-1'07) view, corresponding to that shown in Fig. 2, but with the device in inoperative position; and
Figure 4 is a detail cross-sectional View, taken substantially along the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, A indicates an ironing board of any suitable size, shape and construction, commonly used about the home.
These boards may be as simple as desired, and although only a portion of such a board has been illustrated, it is obvious that such a board may be a part of a collapsible self-supporting structure, of wide-spread use, the enlarged end I of such board A being shown. i Y
When a sad iron or other pressing iron is used in connection' with such a board, a supporting surface for such iron must be provided, and most often, said iron is supported directly on the board itself, sometimes with a plate or platform interposed between the iron and board to take the wear'and tear thus imposed, and to prolong the wearing qualities of the covering of the board and preventing the deterioration of the board itself that comes from overheating.
Not only does such an arrangement shorten the life of the board and cover, but it decreases the effective ironing area of the board, inasmuch as the area adjacent the iron support is not available for pressing too.
To overcome these shortcomings, I have so constructed -a stand or holder for the pressing iron, that it will be supported by the board, adjacent to one end of the same, and will be in handy availability during pressing but may be readily and quickly shifted out of the way when no longer needed in the pressing operation.
The device of my invention is made of two main sections or members, in a manner that makes for strength, cheapness, and neatness, as will now beset forth.
One of these members is the bracket member B adapted to be aixed to one end of the board A, as for example, to its largeror wider end l. Said bracket member may be made out of a piece of sheet steel or other similar` sheet metal of suitable strength and size for the purpose intended, the same provided with a pair'of vertically spaced plates, indicated by the top and bottom plates 2 and 3, respectively, whereby said end l of the board may be straddled between said plates when it is desired to attach said member B to said. board. Said lower rplate 3 is folded double intermediate its ends and bent downwardly therefrom at an angle to provide the flange 4, and another flange 5 is formed from said plate, extending substantially parallel to the flange 4 and spaced a predetermined distance therefrom.
The flange 5 is provided with a transversely extending slot or opening 6 thereacross, adjacent the lower edge of said flange, for a purpose to be more clearly hereinafter dened, and one or more screws I may be used to fasten the bracket to the board, through said :top plate 2.
The iron-receiving and supporting member C is arranged to cooperate with said bracket member B in order to support the pressing iron adjacent to the board, said member C preferably being formed of a sheet metal blank of suitable size, shape and strength.
Said member C may have an enlarged area to provide the iron-receiving lplatform 8 of a shape to amply accommodate the iron to be used, and one or more openings 9 may be made throughsaid platform, to prevent overheating of the platform, and to prevent the accumulation of any moisture beneath the iron.
Extending downwardly from the edge of said platform closest said board end, is the portion I0, for a distance approximately equal to that of said slot from below the upper plate 2, said portion Il! thence extending substantially horizontally and sulciently reduced in width so that it forms a tongue I Il of a size that may be slidably inserted through the slot 6, somewhat as shown.
Adjacent the free end of said tongue there is formed a hook I2, and a groove I3 is formed transversely of said tongue adjacent said hook, this groove adapted fto receive and interlock with the edge of the flange 4 of the bracket member.
A reinforcing strut I4 is formed from the member C, for transmitting the load from the platform 8 to said tongue, as by bending said strut portion back upon itself so that it is in superimposed relation with the under side of that edge of the iron-receiving platform farthest from the ironing board, and if desired, may be spot-welded or otherwise secured in said assembled relationship, said edge of the platform being preferably elevated for this purpose, and also for ythe purpose of providing a backsto-p to limit movement of the iron in this direction. The lower end of said portion I4 may be similarly secured to the under side of said tongue II, and
may terminate to form a stop to additionally limit sliding movement of said member C inwardly relatively of the member B, as will now be described, said end of the strut abutting the flange 5 for this purpose.
When the device is in operative position, ready to receive and support the pressing iron its platform, the tongue of the member C is threaded through said slot 6 and the hook I2 is adjacent the flange 4 so that the latter is seated within the groove I3, so that the weight of the iron will be transmitted through said tongue to press the latter upwardly against the flange 4 and downwardly against the lower bounding edge of the slot 6. Obviously, the tongue and strut portions may be strengthened with the reinforcing side flanges and medial ribs, somewhat as indicated,
Depending from the lower plate 3 of the bracket member are a pair of resilient arms I`5-I5, extending to slightly below the lower edges of the flanges 4 and 5, the lowermost ends of said legs being brought toward one another so as to make the effective opening therebetween slightly less than the width of thetongue II, and at a predetermined distance upwardly of said convergent ends said legs or arms are spread to form a guideway I6 therebetween, of a size to receive and accommodate the width of the tongue portion that passes therebetween, somewhat as shown. This guideway is approximately in horizontal registry with the slot.
To release the device from its operative to its inoperative position, the iron is taken from the platform and the member C shifted to the right as far as it will go, and which sliding movement terminates when the hook of the tongue engages in the portion of the ilange 5 immediately beneath the slot. This position forms a hinged or pivotal connection of the element C with the bracket member B, so that said member C may now be swung downwardly on its pivotal axis, and brought upwardly past the yieldable pair of arms I 5-I 5 to spring them sufllciently to permit said tongue to pass upwardly therebeyond and into the guideway I6, and with said tongue approximately abutting against the lower edge of the flange 4.
The member C will thus be retained out of the way beneath the board, in inoperative Dosition until needed, and the board may be stored away with the device in place on the same, Now, when it is again needed, the board is set up, and the member C then manually released from the pair of spring clips or arms I5--I5 by pressing downwardly on said member adjacent Van innermost point of the same, continued movement of said member causing the same to swing about its pivotal axisuntil its tongue is approximately in horizontal registry with the guideway IB, whereupon a sliding movement inwardly against the adjacent end of the ironing board will shift the tongue through said guideway until the groove I3 receives the free edge of the flange 4, and the lower edge of the strut is substantially abutting the adjacent face of the flange 5.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence it is clear that I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, arrangement, construction and combination of parts as herein shown and described, except as limited by the state of the art to which this invention appertains and as defined by the claims hereunto appended.
