Description

Oct. 30, 1951 s. R. BLACKSTONE WRITING PAD HOLDER Filed Oct. 20, 1948 ATTOR N EY Patented Oct. 3O, 1951 7 UNITED sures PATENT orr cg gorrra l Selwyn RnBlackstone, Madison, Wis Application October 20,
This invention relates to a writing pad holder and has related more particularly to'an article of this kind especially designed to be hung on aver tically disposed surface such'as a wall of a room. It is primarily an object of the "nventiof tofprovide an Object of this kind which, when not iii'use may be readily compacted to lieblose against the wall or thelikei 'It is also an Object of the invention to provide an article of this kind -including-a' base or back member being hingedly cgnnected therewith a Desi Plat t g the with. a. eve elem or. in ing the pad plate into or out of working positions and to provide means for maintaining the plate in its extended or working adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination of the several parts of my improved Writing Pad Holder whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a pad holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention with the pad plate in an extended position;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the article as illustrated in Figure 1 with a portion broken away;
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation of the device in compact adjustment with portions of the applied pad broken away.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a back or base plate of desired dimensions and configuration and which is adapted to be secured to a vertical surface, such as the wall of a room, by the screw l or as otherwise desired to maintain the plate B in a firm mounting.
The side vertical marginal portions of the plate Bare provided therealong with the forwardly directed flanges 2 substantially at right angles thereto and provided closely adjacent to their upper ends with the recesses 3.
The central portion of the outer face of the plate B carries a number of vertically disposed tubular members 4 welded or otherwise secured to the plate B. These members 4 are open at the top and closed at the bottom and provide containers to receive pencils or the like.
The pad plate P is of preferred dimension but of a width slightly in excess of the width of the l plate B so that the outwardly directed arms 5 may 2 Claims. (on 281 -15) utward verl ee anges 1 a d e t ll serra eder th s a Ba oin a ove he rece se fi The arm a a-c inuati ao the n a l dimmed side an e- 1 \Of h la e P nd. h flanges I also outwardly,'overlieQthe flanges 2 'when the plate Pis swung inwardlytowardfthe plate- 'Iheplate Pin close proximity to its top and bett mi Dreaded. th eacr s t the l 8 thr u h which th ea theac n o r 9 a am neal wri in red 10-; n ur 2 the board 9 is shown as disposed only through the upper slot but if desired may be readily inserted through the lower slot.
The upper portions of the flanges 6 have disposed lengthwise thereof th slots I I through which freely but substantially snugly pass the intermediate bar I2 of a lever element E. This element E, as herein comprised, is in the form of an inverted U and the outer extremity of each of the side arms I4 is continued by an inwardly disposed part I 5 which freely passes through the lower extremity of the adjacent flange 2 of the plate B.
' The arms H! are of such length that upon swinging the lever element upwardly and inwardly toward the plate B, the pad plate P will be swung downwardly and inwardly to a position closely adjacent to the plate B so that the plate P will be out of the way when the device is not in use.
The points at which the outer ends of the slots ll terminate together with the length of the side arms l4 determine the angle of position of the plate P when the lever element is swung outwardly and downwardly to its limit of such movement as determined by the contact of the intermediate bar l2 of the lever element E provides an effective prop for maintaining such position and particularly against the writing pressure imposed upon the writing pad on the plate P.
One of the side arms ll! of the lever element E is provided at its outer portion with an outwardly and laterally finger piece or loop I 6 which can be readily engaged by the hand of a person to swing the element E in a direction to either raise or lower the plate P.
The recesses 3 in the flanges 2 receive the adjacent portions of the intermediate bar l2 of the lever element E to assure the pad plate P having close approach to the base or back plate B, when the plate P is fully raised.
From the foregoing it is believed to be apparent that the device as herein embodied is one that awawe 3 may be used to advantage by housewives or others for grocery lists, telephone pads and the like.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a supporting plate, flanges out-turned from the side edges of said plate, a writing pad supporting plate, other flanges inturned from the side edges of said pad supporting plate and having slots formed lengthwise thereof, said other fianges being extended beyond the top end edge of said pad supporting plate, means pivotally connecting the extensions of said other flanges with the upper ends of the first flanges, a substantially U-shaped lever having the free ends of its side portionspivotallyconnected with the lower ends of the first flanges and the end portion connecting the other ends of said side portions passing through said slots, and a finger piece outwardly offset from one of said side portions to facilitate the manipulation'of i said lever to raise and lower said pad supporting plate from and to its normally depending position relatively to the first plate, the first flanges having notches formed in the edges thereof immediatelybelow the points of the first pivot means to provide a clearance for the end connecting portion of said lever when said pad supporting plate is dependingly disposed.
2. In a device of the class, a supporting plate adapted to be vertically disposed for use, a writing pad supporting plate, flanges inturned from the side edges of said pad supporting plate and having slots formed lengthwise thereof, said one of said side portions to facilitate the manipulation of said lever to raise and lower said pad supporting plate from and to its normally depending position relatively to the first plate.
