HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1911.
Application filed January 6, 1910. Serial No. 536,673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS KOISA, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to holders or hooks, such as are used for clothes or other articles.
The invention designs to provide a simple device, which can be conveniently-and removably secured to a board or wall and folded so that it can be conveniently carried in a pocket or about the person.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is aside elevation of the improved hook or hanger, shown in operative position. F ig.'2 isa perspective of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the holder when folded. Fig. 5 is a section through the back member and arm when they are folded. together.-
Fig. 6 is a perspective of the back-member of the holder, and Fig. 7 isa detail of the hookarm.
A back 10 adapted to abut against a wall or board, is formed of a flat strip of metal and is provided with an upturned lower end 11, which serves as a hook for holding a coat or article of considerable weight. This back is formed of firm sheet or strip metal and is cut to provide a struck-up rearwardly extending prong 12, which is integral with the back and is adapted to be pressed into a board or wall to which. it may be desired to secure the device. When the prong has been forced into a board, the back 10 will abut against the board and the weight of an article on hook 11 will be disposed so that there will be no material stresses tending to withdraw the prong 12 from the board. To the upper end of the back 10, an arm 13 is pivotally connected by a pintle 14:. To form the hinge-connection between arm 13 and back 10, an ear 15 is integrally formed on said arm and eyes 16 are formed at the upper end of the back, suflicient space being left between said eyes to receive ear 15. The back edge 17 of arm 13 is formed toserve as an abutment below the hinge-connection for holding the arm in operative position. The
.front end of arm 13 is provided with a hook 18 adapted to hold a hat or other light article of insuflicient weight to overload the device. Arm 13 is also formed of stout sheet metal having its faces extended in a vertical plan and at substantially right angles to the plane of the face of back 10, and resultantly, a broad flat back is provided on back-member 10 for abutting against a board or wall and arm 13 will be inherently rigid to resist vertical stresses. The hinge-connectionpermits the back 11 to be folded into close or parallel relation with arm 13, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and hook 11 at the lower end of back 10 is slightly resilient, so that it will enter the backof hook 18 on arm 13 and thus yieldingly hold the arm and back in folded relation. To protect the prong 12, when the hook-members are folded from cutting a pocket when carried about the person, arm 13 is recessed as at 19, to receive the prong, so that it will not project beyondthe side-faceof arm 13.
The invention thus provides an improved holder or hook, which may be readily secured to a board or wall at any desired place,
where it may be desired to use it, or in other words, a portable holder. The members may be produced at a low cost and can be stamped from sheet metal. When in folded position, the device can be conveniently carried about the person.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details shown and described, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: F
