Filed Apr. 26, 1962, Ser. No. 190,346 4 Claims. (Cl. 281-3) This invention relates to a book and a novel pad holding attachment for a marginal portion thereof whereby a conventional note pad may be held in an accessible position for ready use.

It is often desirable when reading a book, particularly when seeking helpful information, to jot down questions, answers and comments whatever they may be. If one owns the book he can underscore, make marginal entries or where preferred he can resort to the use of a nearby memorandum pad, as the case may be. When the reader does not own the book he will no doubt enter his comments on a pad supported by a nearby table, chair arm or the like. In either situation there is a more satisfactory solution of the problem as is herein oifered. It follows that the chief objective of the instant concept is to provide a convenient memorandum pad and a holder therefor and to equip the holder with an adapter by way of which the holder may be attached to the book, more particularly either the front or back cover of said book.

Briefly summarized the present invention is characterized by a conventional book embodying pages bound as usual between customary front and back covers which, as will be later understood, may be covers which are either in the so-called soft or hard back category. The note pad is conventional and may be thought of as a relatively small pad say three inches by four inches or some similar dimension. The pad is a type provided, as customary, with a cardboard backing which is detachably mounted on a stabilizing base, the latter constituting a component part of the pad holder. This pad holder is designed and constructed for ready attachment to a selected upper corner portion, either left or right, of the front or back cover whereby the pad is perched and reliably held in an offset or outwardly projecting marginal position for expedient use.

More explicitly the invention has to do with the pad holder. This holder is preferably made from relatively rigid cardboard stock, is approximately rectangular in plan, is provided with or without a sheath for accommodating a pencil or pen and, what is important, is constructed to embody a simple practical adapter, that is, means along an inner marginal edge by way of which the pad holder is attached to the intended marginal edge portions of the book cover.

In carrying out the preferred embodiments of the invention the holder comprises opposed plies or members which are substantially rigid cardboard components having several edges joined together and having at least two marginal edges separated to define and provide the aforementioned adapter. One ply or member is provided with spaced parallel keeper slots which are selectively usable and which permit the backing of the pad to be passed through a selected slot and tucked securely between the two complemental members whereby to thus locate the pad in a position relative to the book so that it is available and in readiness for note writing purposes.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIGURE 2 is a view in perspective on a larger scale with the note pad removed and with the holder detached from the book and prior to having formed a split to prepare the adapter for use;

FIGURE 3 is a view on a small scale showing the cardboard blank from which the holder is fashioned and before the outer covering or wrapper is applied;

FIGURE 4 is an edge view of the blank shown in FIG- URE 3;

FIGURE 5 is an exaggerated section taken on the plane of the line 5-5 of FIGURE 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;

FIGURE 8 is a plan view (similar to FIG. 3) showing the cardboard or equivalent blank from which this form of the invention is constructed, that is the embodiment shown in FIGURE 7;

FIGURE 9 is an enlarged perspective view of the pad holder by itself with the pad omitted and before the lower end of the adapter has been slitted and brought into play; and

FIGURE 10 is a section on the section line 10-10 of FIGURE 9.

Reference will be had first to FIGURES 1 to 6, inelusive, and the embodiment of the concept therein disclosed. Referring first to FIG. 1 the numeral 12 designates a book, any conventional book, characterized by pages 14 bound together as at 16 and including front and back covers. For convenience here the cover at the left in FIG. 1 will be described as the lefthand cover 18 and the other cover as the righthand cover 20, it being the upper righthand corner portion or margin 22 of this cover which is of special concern here.

The attachment means comprises the note pad 24 and holder 26 collectively. The pad by itself is a conventional article of manufacture and embodies detachable sheets of writing paper 28 stacked and mounted on and attached to a cardboard backing 30 as shown best in FIGURES 5 and 6. The holder for the pad comprises a rigid base characterized primarily by a pair of superposed top and bottom panels, the top panel being denoted at 32 and the substantially duplicate bottom panel or member by the numeral 34. The outer marginal edges indicated at 36 are sealed, adhesively or otherwise joined together and the lower and

38 and 40 are likewise joined together. On the other hand the two

marginal edges

42 and 44 are not joined together and, as a matter of fact, constitute the principal component part of the adapter means (at the right in FIGURE 2) which is designated generally at 46. The holder proper is to the left of the adapter means and the top panel thereof embodies spaced parallel keeper slots 43 which may be selectively used depending on whether the holder is at the right as shovm in FIG. 1 or at the left as shown in FIG. 7. In connection with the adapter means 46 it is to be noted that the

50 and 52 are provided with suitable descriptive legends righthand and lefthand and that indicating lines, dotted lines as at 54 are provided to guide the user in applying the adapter means to the upper righthand corner of the book cover 20 as shown in FIGURE 1 or, if it were going to be reversed, applying it to the upper lefthand corner as shown in FIGURE 7. The cardboard should be such in construction as to permit the user to take a knife or a pair of scissors and to cut or slit whichever corner portion is going to be used. This results in opening the adapter at one end and leaving it closed across the other end whereby the adapter can thus he slipped over the marginal edges or corner portion at the right as shown in FIGURE 1. By passing the backing 30 through the proper keeper slot 43, the one at the top here, the backing is thus sandwiched or interposed between the top and

32 and 34 and the pad is thus held in place. The overall attachment provides a satisfactory rigid base to support the pad in a usable position. The attachment can be left in place and when the pad 24 has been used up another pad (not shown) can be put in position for use.

The cardboard body which is used to make up the principal component parts of the holder is shown in FIG. 3. It embodies the panel or component part 34 which has a similar panel (FIG. 4) 35 glued on the other side thereof to provide a double thickness. The next panel is denoted at 32 and this is the one that has the slots 48 therein. The remaining or third panel which is narrower and constitutes a flap is denoted at 37 and is foldable on the fold line 68. The numeral 70 also designates a fold line making it possible to fold the several components to provide the holder shown. When the parts have been folded and fastened together a suitable outer covering or wrapper is applied thereon and glued or otherwise fastened thereto the wrapper being denoted generally at 72 in FIGS. and 6.

With reference now to the slight modified form of the invention which is shown in FIGS. 7 to 10, it will be noted that the aforementioned wrapper or covering means 72 is omitted here to avoid confusion between plies of material. Because of this approach reference numerals designate like parts in the L-shaped blank shown in FIG. 8 and also the finished holders shown in FIGS. 9 and in particular. 76 and 78 is bent upon itself to provide an open-ended sleeve which constitutes a suitable tubular sheath for the insertable and removable writing instrument, for example, the pen A shown in FIG. 7. In this embodiment the bottom member of the holder comprises the panel 80 joined by a fold line 82 to the top member or panel 84 having keeper slots 36 therein which are selectively usable. The relatively narrow assembling and retaining flap is denoted at $3 and is foldable on the fold line 90. The remaining panel 92 which corresponds in size with the two panels 849 and 84 is shown at the upper right in FIG. 8 and when the component panels are folded and glued together to make a unit, the final holder, the panel 92 is sandwiched or tucked between the two top and

84 and 30, respectively, as shown in FIGURES 9 and 10. The finished holder in these figures is denoted generally by the numeral 92 and carries the pencil holding sheath at the left. The adapter in this instance is denoted generally at 94 and the severable end portions are denoted at 96 and 98, respectively. In this particular instance printed

100 and 102 assist the user in determining the use of the holder as to either the left side or the right side as the case may be and here again legends (not shown) may be printed to assist in making the selection and applying the holder. In any event it can be assumed here that the fold or margin 98 has been cut open to define the adapter and that the adapter has been slipped down over the marginal edge 104 of the lefthand cover 106 of the book shown in FIG. 7. The pad is here denoted at 108, the backing 110 thereof being fitted into the selected keeper slot 86.

Depending on whether the holder is to be applied as shown in FIG. 1 on the one hand or FIG. 7 on the other hand it is evident that the user will have to ascertain in advance which end of the adapter means 46 or 94 is to be opened up in order to allow the adapter to be applied to either the left or right side of the book. After the holder has been attached to the selected cover of the book the assumption being that the keeper slots are in the correct position, the backing of a note pad is fitted into place and sandwiched and held in the manner already described. Consequently the holder and pad now project well beyond the marginal limits of the book so that the pages of the book may be opened without difficulty or interference. Also the holder with the pad thereon can be detached from the book and carried in ones apparel pocket or in a handbag and thus be in readiness for convenient adoption and use.

It is believed that a careful consideration of the specification in conjunction with the figures of the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear and comprehensive understanding of the invention generically and specifically construed, the construction of the component parts and the features and advantages. Therefore, a more extended description is believed to be unnecessary.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A note pad mounting and temporary retaining attachment for a pair of right angularly disposed marginal edge portions of one cover, either front or back cover, of a book comprising a pad holder embodying a base, embodying a bottom panel and a complemental top panel superimposed atop said bottom panel, the opposed proximal surfaces of said panels being separate from each other, the upper, lower and outwardly disposed marginal edges of said panels being integrally joined together whereby said panels conjointly provide a receiving and retaining space for the cardboard backing of said pad, the corresponding inwardly disposed marginal edges of said panels being wholly detached and spaced apart and defining an elongated pocket-like adapter, the pocket portion of said adaptor being adapted to permit right angularly disposed marginal edge portions of one corner portion of the book cover to be fitted and lodged in the pocket portion and removably sandwiched between the pocket forming portions of said adapter, the respective ends of the adapter being in line with the aforementioned integrally joined upper and lower marginal edges of said panels being selectively severable whereby one end of the adapter may be split open to provide an inlet for the insertable marginal edges of said corner portion.

2. The structure defined in claim 1 and wherein said top panel is provided with spaced parallel selectively usable keeper slots for individual passage and retention of the aforementioned cardboard backing, the inner ends of the respective slots terminating short of said adapter.

3. An attachment for cooperating right angularly disposed marginal edges defining a corner portion of a book cover comprising a holder which serves to conveniently and firmly support a scratch pad such as, as is usual, is provided with the customary cardboard backing, said holder comprising a substantially rigid base embodying a bottom panel and a top panel superimposed on the bottom panel, the upper, lower and outwardly disposed marginal edges of said panel being integrally joined, the inwardly disposed marginal edges of said panels being detached and spaced apart and cooperating in defining an adapter adapted to separably connect said holder to the aforementioned corner portion, said adapter embodying upper and lower end portions and said end portions having restricted severable component portions wherein either of said end portions may be split open by cutting or otherwise in the manner to provide an inlet for the aforementioned right angularly related marginal edges of said corner, and said top panel having at least one keeper slot therein for reception and retention of the aforementioned cardboard backing.

4. The structure defined in claim 3 and wherein said top panel is provided with a second keeper slot permitting selective use of the keeper slots, said slots being disposed in spaced-apart parallelism and having corresponding in wardly disposed terminal ends thereof terminating short of the pocket portion of the aforementioned adapter, and also wherein said base is provided with an open-ended integrally attached sleeve, said sleeve defining a sheath for removable reception and retention of a pencil, pen, stylus or the like.
