July 19, 1949. I w. M. FOLEY sow BAG SUPPORT 2 Sheets heat 1 Filed Aug. 4, 1947 INVENTOR. WALTER M. IL-OLEK ATTCI R N EYB July 19, 1949; w. M. FOLEY GOLF BAG SUPPORT 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 4, 1947 INVENTORI. W41. me M 544-) ATTD RN EYS Patented July 19, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLF BAG SUPPORT Walter M. Foley, Redondo, Calif. v
Application August 4, 1947, Serial No. 766,119
2 Claims. (01. 24 8-96) This invention relates to golf bag supports.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a. golf bag support which can be carried 'upon the bag and adjusted between a position where it extends parallel with the side of the bag as when the bag is being transported and to a position where it extends downwardly to serve as a support and wherein the support comprises two legs which when moved to the down position are separated from one another automatically by spring action and when moved to the transport position are automatically closed together.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a golf bag support which can be easily attached to the golf bag by merely sliding the same over the top open end thereof, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in 'connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the golf bag support and of a golf bag resting thereon.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the support and looking into the open end of the bag and with the support in its extended or supporting position.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view looking upon the support after it has been closed and folded to a position parallel to the side of the bag.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevational view of the support in its extended position with the handle in the wide notches of the guide elements.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and showing the construction of the handle portion.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the support after the same has been adjusted to a transport position with the handles in the narrow notches of the guide elements.
Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken through the pivot connection of the support parts and on line 8-8 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 9 is a detail plan view of the notched guide plates.
Referring now to the figures, I5 represents a golf bag having the usual strap It by which the same can be carried. The golf bag has an open top end I! and a ball pocket l8. Over the open top end I! there is extended an attaching clip |9 of my golf bag support indicated generally at 20.
This clip l9 has an exterior portion 2| which extends for some distance downwardly over the end of the bag and a retaining internal portion 22. From the portion 2|, there are extended spaced lugs 23 between which there is extended a projection 24 of a pivot pin 25 through which supporting legs 26 and 21 are pivotally connected and secured by a washer 28 and an upturned end 29 of the pivot pin 25, Fig. 8. The connection of the projection 24 with the lugs 23 is effected by a pin 3|. Upon this pin 3| the projection 24 and the legs 26 and 21 can be pivoted from a position as shown in Fig. 3 parallel with the side of the bag or to a position as shown in Fig. 2 where they are extended downwardly therefrom to serve as a support as shown in Fig. 1 for the upper end of the bag. v
Each of the legs 26 and 21 have a handle portion 32 which is bent at an angle to the main part of the leg. These handle portions are urged to a separated position by a compression spring 33 having its ends disposed in recesses 34 on the inner faces of the handle portion.
On the portion 2| of the attaching member I9, is a second pair of spaced lugs 36 to which is connected a guide member 3! having wide notches 38 and narrow notches 39 into which the handle portions 32 may be extended to retain the legs in their separated positions as when the beg is to be rested upon the end of the same and the narrow notches 39 to retain the handles when the legs have been drawn up to a transport position parallel to the side of the bag. The guide member 31 has a projection 4| which extends between the spaced lugs 36 and is secured thereto by a pivot pin 42. By squeezing the handles against the action of the spring 33, they may be passed through a narrowed portion s t of the guide member 31 to one set of notches or the other. Automatically upon arriving at the notch spring 33 will cause the same to be ext thereinto and to be retained against vertical adjustment until the handles are again squeezed.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A golf bag support adapted to be attached to a golf bag having a member attachable thereto, said member having a projection depending therefrom, a pivot pin having a projection connected with the projection of the attaching member to pivot about a horizontal axis, a pair of supporting legs pivoted to the pivot pin and adapted to be closed or separated from one another and by virtue of the pivot connection of the pivot pin with the projection on the member adapted to be extended from a down or supporting position to a position of transport on the bag and parallel to the side thereof, and means for retaining the legs in their open and downwardly extended positions, said means for retaining the legs in their open and downwardly extended supported position comprising a guide plate pivotally connected to the attaching member and having opposing notches therein, said legs having portions adapted to be extended into the notches whereby the legs will be supported against lateral and upward displacement.
2. A golf bag support adaptedto :be attached to a golf bag having a member attachable thereto, said member havin a projection depending therefrom, a pivot pin having a projection connected with the projection of the attaching member to pivot about a horizontal axis, a pair of supporting legs pivoted to the pivot pin and adapted to he closed or separated from one another and by virtue of the pivot connection of the. pivot pin with the projection on the member adapted to be extended from a down or supporting position to a. position of transport on the bag and parallel to the side thereof, and means for retaining the legs in their open and downwardly extended positions, said attaching member having a second projection extending therefrom, a guide plate pivotally connected to the second projection for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis, said legs having extensions thereon which pass through the guide member, said guide member having notches adapted to receive the extension of the legs whereby to retain them in their separated positions and said guide member having further notches adapted to receive the extensions of the legs to retain the legs in their closed poistion and folded upwardly to the side of the bag for transport.
