Description
Dec. 2, 1947. l. WITKEN WORK TRESTLE Filed July 2, 1946 ISADOBE.
Patented Dec. 2, 1947 .zai aas leaders Eitk n. $111M a m- Application airlift, 1945, 352th! 51919.5 131? (Cllififlmfi) 5 Claims. 1 The present invention relates; tornew and-useful improvements in work trestles of a type com monly known as a carpenter's trestle, and designed particularly for useby paper hangers.
Animportant object of the present invention is .to provide an adjustable trestle of this :character :and one in which the :partsmay be folded into a compact form, when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable locking device for the legs of the trestle and which is also used for locking the parts of the trestle in its folded position.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, which may be easily and quickly moved from its folded position into its open position, and which at the same time is inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the trestle in its open position.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the locking members.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the trestle in its folded position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of rails which are preferably constructed of inexpensive wood and of substantially rectangular shape in crosssection, the rails being placed in side-by-side relation and retained in assembled relation by a pair of U-shaped metal slides 1 for longitudinal sliding adjustment of the rails relative to each other.
Each of the rails is formed at its outer lower edge with longitudinally spaced notches 8 in which the upper ends of legs 9 are received, a pair of the legs being positioned at each end of the rails.
One pair of legs are pivoted to the outer end of the rail 5 by means of braces l0 and the other pair of legs are similarly pivoted to the outer end of the rail 6 by braces H, the braces being positioned on the inner sides of their respective legs and arranged to fold the legs against the outer '2 sides of the rails when the trestle is inlts folded position.
Each pair of legs is connected tau-each 'other'by folding braces 12 'to secure the lower ends 'of the legs :in outwardly inclined position with respect to the rails.
"The upper ends of the legs are connected to each otherby anadjustable brace l3 which comfprises a pair of substantially L-shaped members [4 secured to the respective legs and having their ends arranged in overlapping relation and formed with aligned horizontal slots 15 in which a pin i6 is received for slidably connecting the members to each other for extensible adjustment. The members M are secured in a retracted position by means of a pivoted latch ll carried by one of the members l4 and having a notch I8 engageable with a pin l9 carried by the other of said members to lock the members against sliding movement into their extended position.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that by releasing the latch I! from the pin IS, the upper ends of the legs 9 may be moved laterally outwardly from the notches 8 of the rails and the brace l2 folded to permit swinging of the legs 9 and braces Ill against the sides of the rails from the position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing to its folded position as shown in Figure 4.
The rails 5 and 6 are secured in longitudinally adjusted position relative to each other by means of a locking catch 20 having an arm 2| pivoted to the inner side of one of the rails and formed at its free end with an inverted U-shaped resilient member 22 adapted for frictional engagement over the upper edge of the other of said rails, as shown more clearly in Figure 1 of the drawing.
To one of the braces I0 is pivoted a bracket 23 for swinging downwardly into a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1 to support one end of a paper hangers straight edge 24 thereon, when the straight edge is not in use on a table for trimming paper in the usual manner.
The bracket is swung upwardly in a recess 25 in the brace II] when not in use and the free end of the bracket is formed with a clip 26 to grip the brace. The recess forms a stop for the pivoted end of the bracket to limit its downward swinging movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A collapsible trestle of the class described comprising a pair of rails connected to each other for extensible adjustment, said rails having 1ongitudinally spaced notches therein, legs having their upper ends selectively received in said notches, and braces connecting the legs to the rails and arranged to fold the legs against the sides of the rails.
2. A collapsible trestle of the class described comprising a pair of rails connected to each other for extensible adjustment, said rails having longitudinally spaced notches therein, a pair of legs at each end of the trestle, and braces pivotally connecting the legs to the rails for folding the legs against the sides of the rails, said legs having their upper ends selectively received in said notches when in open position.
3. A collapsible trestle of the class described comprising a pair of rails connected to each other for extensible adjustment, said rail having longitudinally spaced notches therein, a pair of legs at each end of the trestle, braces pivotally connecting the legs to the rails for folding the legs against the sides of the rails, said legs having against the sides of the rails, said legs having their upper ends selectively received in said notches when in open position, and extensible braces connecting the legs of each pair to each other when in open or folded position.
5. A collapsible trestle of the class described comprising a pair of extensible rails having 1onitudinally spaced notches in their lower portions, a pair of legs at each end of the trestle, braces pivoted at one end to the rails and pivoted at their other ends to the legs to connect the leg to the rails for folding against the sides of the rails, said legs converging at their upper ends and selectively received in said notches, and an extensible brace for each pair of legs and securing the upper ends of the legs against spreading movement when in either an open or folded position.
