Description

` March 19, 1946.
J. MACLASKEY SAW HORSE 'Filed may 18, 1945 INVENTORy JOHN MAcLAsKY ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 19, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcEv I 2,396,737 sAWHoRsE JohnMaclaskey, LosvAngeles, Calif. Applicann May 1s, 1945, Aserial No. 594,523
. s claims. (c1. soi- The invention relates to a trestle, and more especially to a knockdown or foldable sawing trestle.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a trestle of this character, wherein the legs thereof can be firmly and securely held in supporting position or knocked-down or folded, and when in the latter condition, the trestle can be conveniently carried from one place to another or stored in the least possible space.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a trestle of this character, wherein the legs are mounted in a novel manner for the quick setting up and knocking down of the trestle, the latter when set up being rm and will not accidentally collapse during the use thereof, for example in supporting wood or other materials for the sawing thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a trestle of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eilicient in operation, stron-g, durable, readily and easily folded and unfolded, possessed of few parts, firm and secure when set up for use, convenient for handling and storage, compact when in folded condition, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l' is a side View, partly broken away, of the trestle constructed in accordance with the invention, and showing by dotted lines opposed legs partly folded;
Figure 2 is an end view, partly broken away;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the fastening of a leg in supporting position;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the trestle in folded condition.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the trestle constructed in accordance with the invention, comprises a beam or bar-like head or main topframe or body I0, creating a compartment II by the sides I2 and ends I3, respectively, and fully open through the under side of such beam or bar head or top-frame or body I0.
Adjacent to each end I3 and crossing the compartment II is a pivot bolt I4, which has its ends made secure in the opposite sides I2, and such bolt is located approximately at the transverse center of the said compartment for the loose hanging of a pair of opposed laterally spreadable and swingingly foldable prop legs I5, each at the point of hanging is provided with an elongated slot I6 for the said bolt I4, while the outermost corner I1 at the inner end of such leg is rounded to clear the end I3 next thereto of the head or body I0 on folding or unfolding of this leg. The slot I6 is reinforced by an escutcheon or protecting plate I8 with its slot matching such slot I6, as best seen in Figure 3 of the drawing, and thereby eliminating splitting of the leg or undue wearing at this point, the plate being secured.
to the leg as at I9. k
In the under face of the top of the head or body I0 next to each end I3 and close to but at opposite sides of the longitudinal center axis of such head or body are transversely aligned counterseats or sockets 20 for removably receiving the inner ends of the opposed2 pair of legs I5 when unfolded and outwardly spread in diverging relation to each other, while provided in the inner faces of the sides I2 are opposed reversely beveled recesses 2| for accommodating 'the legs therein when unfolded and in spread relation to one another. The sockets and recessesrespec tively, constitute latching keepers or seats for the said legs I5 when unfolded and prevent folding thereof during propping position for the trestle.
The sockets 2i! and the recesses 2|, as well as the legs, each has associated therewith reinforcing abutments 22, 23, and 24, respectively.
Connected to each pair of legs I5 at each end of the head or body I0 is pivotally fitted a breakhinge jointed brace 25, which when extended is latched at 26 in this condition, for holding the pair of legs spread in propping position, and such legs will be maintained socketed to the head or body as before described to eliminate accidental folding of the trestle during its use.
The legs I5 are foldable within the compartment II in the head or body I0, as best seen in Figure 4 of the drawing for the easy handling of the trestle for carriage or storage, the braces 25 being foldable for the setting up or knocking down of the said trestle, as will be obvious.
What is claimed is:
1. A trestle of the kind described, comprising a head piece having a compartment opening through its under side, said piece being formed a head piece having a compartment opening through its under side, said piece being formed with counterseats in the top and side portionsv thereof interiorly of the compartment, laterally spreadable and swingingly foldable legs loosely connected within the compartment to the piece and adapted on the spreading and swinging for socketing in the seats, reinforcing abutments on the seats and the legs for the reinforcement lthereof at their respective points of contact, and
means foldably connecting the legs in pairs for latching the same in the seats when in propping position, the legs when folded being received within the compartment.
3. A trestle of the kind described, comprising a head piece having a compartment opening through its under side, said piece being formed with counterseats in the top and side portions thereof interiorly of the compartment, laterally spreadable and `swingingly foldable legs loosely connected within the compartment tothe piece and adapted on the spreading and swinging for socketing in the seats, reinforcing abutments on the seats and the legs for the reinforcement thereof at their respective points of contact, means foldably connecting the legs in pairs for latching the same in the seats when in propping position,h the-legs when folded being received within the compartment and reinforcements for the legs at their points of connection with the compartment.
