SPECIFICATION for sing part of Letters Patent No. 314,769, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed August 26, 1884. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern; I
, Be it known that I, HENRY O. Ynrsnn, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in those devices for the temporary holding of business letters and other like papers, in which ajaw,
1o hinged or pivoted to a board is, by the action of a spring, caused to press automatically upon papers placed upon such board; and my present invention consists in the provision of an auxiliary spring or catch, which, whenever 1 the jaw is elevated beyond a certain prearranged distance, automatically holds the said jaw open until released by the user.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper-clip embodying my invention, my auxiliary spring or catch being represented in its effective condition that is to say, in the act of holding open the clip-jaw. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections, in which the clip-jaw is shown in its wide-open and closed conditions, respectively. Fig. 4 is a front view of a paper-holder which is provided with a pair of my improved clips. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical sections showing modifications of my invention in the gaping condi- 0 tion of thejaw.
The back board, A, the pivot-box B, the clipjaw O, and the main or closing spring D are intended to represent a customary form of those parts, which requires no further description. I associate with these parts an auxiliary spring catch or detent, which is preferably constructed as represented in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and l-that is to say, of a piece of springwire whose middle portion is so bent as to form two incurved lips, E E, united by a bar, F, which serves the purpose of a handle, and
the lips to engage with the heel of the clipjaw O. Said lips terminate in prongs G G, whose hooked extremities g g, by engaging in recesses b b of the pivot-box B. or secured to the base and pressing against its inner wall, induce a constant forward inclination of said spring that insures its automatic engagement with the heel of the clip whenever the said clip is sufficiently retracted for that purpose, thus holding such clip in the w'ideopen or gaping condition shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The above-described preferred form of my invention is susceptible of various modifications for example, such catch may consist of a single spring, which may be fastened to the back board by means of a Wood-screw, as in Fig. 5; or the catch may consist simply of a gravitating hook capable of engagement in a recess of the pivot-box, as in Fig. 6.
I claim herein as new and of my invention 1. The combination, with a paper-clip having the pivot-box B, holding theblosing-spring D, acting on the clip-jaw O, of the prong G, having lip E, adapted to be engaged with the heel of the clipjaw, and hook g, secured to the base for retaining the clip-jaw in open position.
2. The combination, with a paperclip having the pivot-box B, holding the closing-spring D, acting on the clip'jaw O, of the prongs G G, having hooks g g, secured to the base, and
downturned lips E E, connected by a bar, F,
adapted to engage the clip-jaw to retain the latter in open position.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
HENRY O. YEISER. Attest:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, CHAS. E. PRIOR.
