HAT HOOK.
No. 412,074. Patented Oct. 1,1889.

. UNITED STATES PATENT Urrron.
HUGH DARCY, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
HA T- HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,074, dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed May 29, 1889.
To all whmm it may concern.
Beitknown that I, HUGH DAROY, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, an d exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hat-hooks; and it consists in the combination of a hook which is to catch over the back of the chair, seat, or other support, and a swiveled clamp or clasp which is attached to one end of the hook, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to .provide a hook by means of which a hat or other article can be hung upon the back of a chair or any suitable support, and thus prevent the necessity of having to hold the hat in the lap or to' place it upon the floor in halls, churches, theaters, and other places where no hooks are provided for holding hats and other articles.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of a hat-hook which embodies my invention.
A represents a flat curved strip of metal or any other suitable material and of any desired length and width. This st-rip is bent into the form shown, so as to be adapted to catch over the back of a chair, a seat, or support of anykind, in halls, churches, theaters, and places where hooks are not provided for the purpose of hanging up hats and other similar articles. One of the ends B of this Serial No. 312,498. (No model.)
strip is turned outward at right angles, and riveted to this turned-out end is the springactuated clamp or clasp O, for holding a hat or other article, and which clamp maybe provided with teeth or not, just as may be preferred. This clamp is pivoted upon the end of the strip, so that it can be freely turned in any direction, and thus adapt the article which is being supported to be turned into any desired position which is best suited for it. Where the clamp is not thus pivoted it is not always in a convenient posit-ion to grasp a hat or other article, and hence it becomes necessary to make the curved strip and clamp in separate pieces and adapt one to be turned upon the other. Upon the top of the bend in the strip is formed a little knob or handle, as shown.
This hat-hook is adapted to be carried in the pocket or in the hat, and it is adapted for use wherever there are no hooks for the purpose of hanging up hats. and other articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim* The combination of the bent strip A, provided with a handle or knob at its top and having one of its ends turned horizontally outward, with the spring-clamp G,having the upper end of its longer jaw also turned outward and pivoted to the turned-out end of the strip, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH DARCY.
