To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE V. A. BROWN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Book Holders, of which the following is a specification. n

The invention relates to an improvement in holders for pocket-books and the like, comprehending specifically a structure adapted to be removably engaged with the article to be secured with the parts thereof arranged to cooperate with the pocket to prevent the unauthorized abstraction of the article from the pocket.

The main object of the present invention is the provision of a holder including spring elements adapted to receive and frictionally engage a pocket-book or similar article and provided with pocket engaging member arranged to cooperate with a portion of the pocket to limit the movement of the device longitudinally of the pocket, whereby to prevent unauthorized abstraction of the article.

The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the application and use of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a top edge View of the same.

The improved holder comprises an article engaging member constructed preferably of a single piece of material formed to provide a rectangular outline including upper and lower bars 1 and 2, and side bars 3. The upper and lower bars 1 and 2 are extended beyond one of the side bars 3 to form projections 4, and in completing the engaging element, that is projected portions are formed in return bends to provide spaced members disposed in parallel relation with the upper and lower bars 1 and 2. A spring 7 is arranged intermediate the bars 5, said spring having sufficient tension to spread the hook ends of the holding bars beyond the engaging member. Spring clips 8 are secured upon the upper bar 1 of the engaging member and serve to provide means to frictionally hold the bars 5 in approximate parallelism with the side bars 3 when it is desired to secure the holding bars in inoperative position.

In use, the article to be secured such as pocket-book indicated by dotted line 9 is passed between the clamping bars previously described, and the article with the attached holder placed in the pocket as 10. Upon release of the downward pressure upon said article, the holding bars under the influence of the spring 7 move outwardly so that their upper ends rest in engagement with the side Any attempt to abstract the article while the holder is in this condition will cause the hook terminals 6 of the arms 5 to engage the upper edge of the pocket in either side of the entrance opening, locking the article against abstraction. When authorized abstraction of the article is desired, the holding bars 5 are moved inwardly and engage beneath the clips 8, whereupon the article and holder may be readily removed.

The improved holder is constructed entirely of metal, and is adapted in any one and clips carried by the engaging member to hold said arms in inoperative position.
