To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Brennan SANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provi deuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved garmenthook designed more especially for suspending a stiff hat, when not in use, in such a manner as to avoid the liability of its falling or becoming disarranged, as with the usual suspension-hooks; and it consists, essentially, ofa hook having an inturned end made to conform substantially to the shape of the rim of a hat and provided with a brace-piece for the under portion of the hatrim to bear against, and further provided with means whereby the hook may be secured to any article of furniture or the like as n fixture or temporarily suspended therefrom, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents the same as adjusted to the rim of a hat in position for use. Fig. 4 represents a side sectional view of a hat, showing my improved hook secured to the sweatband in the interior of the hat when not in use. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 6 represents a like view of the same adapted to be secured as a fixture.

In carrying out my improvement the hook A is made from any suitable material, metal being preferred, and is nickeled, japanncd, or otherwise suitably finished and decorated to suit the requirements of the trade.

In the present instance the hook is made from a strip of metal doubled at the center of its length, the doubled portion being a brace, 1), against which the lower face of the rim of the hat rests when suspended from the hook.

The upper portions of the doubled portion are bent in opposite directions, the one forming the hook 0 being an inverted- U shape, whereby the hook is suspended from any article of furniture or the like, either permanently or otherwise. The opposite end of the hook is bent outward and then inturned upward, as at I), being of substantially the shape of the turned rim of a hat, the end a bearing on the inner portion of said rim, the complete device being shown in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings.

The doubled or brace portion of the hook may be provided with a curved spring, a, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of which the hook, when not in use, may be conveniently carried in the interior of a hat, as shown in Fig. 4, the sweat-band of the hat being pressed between said spring a and the brace Z). The hook is thus always at hand when required.

The end of the hook at 0 may be sharpened, as in Fig. 1, whereby the hook is readily attached or suspended from said penetrable ma terial. At the same time it can be used to equal advantage to be suspended from a rod, as'in a window-fixture and the like.

If desired, the hook portion 1) may be conr bined with an ordinary garment-hook and be permanently secured as a fixture, as shown in Fig. 6.

In use the front or narrow portion of the hat-rim, as at Z, is passed into the hook I), the end a of said hook bearing on the inner portion of said rim. The hat is then turned laterally 011 the hook, carrying the rim around until the side portion or side of said rim rests in the hook, the under portion of the rim resting against the brace b, as shown in Fig. 3. The rim of the hat, being widest at this point. will wedge in the hook I), between the end a and the brace I), and thus the hat is firmly retained in position on said hook.

My improved hook is admirably adapted for suspending hats for display, as in a shop-window, but is especially designed for use in places where it would be otherwise inconvenient to suspend them, as the end 0 can be readily hooked over many articles of fixtures, furniture, and the like, where it would be impossible to hang a hat in the usual manner.
