Description

W. EWING.
HAT CLASP. Y
No. 251,853; Patented Jail. 3.1882.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
WILLIAM EWING, OF FRANKFORD, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
, HAT-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,853, dated January 3, 1882. Application filed June 29, 188 1. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EWING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankford, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front View of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is avertical section in the line arm, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a rear view.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main jaw of the clasp. Pivoted to-and bent in shape similar but reverse to this is the opposite side jaw, B. Upon the back of the shank of the main jaw A is swiveled a ring, D. The upper end of the jaw A is bent to form a hook, a, which, with the ring 1), forms the means of supporting the clasp in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter described.
My objectin constructing a hat-clasp of this form is to provide for travelers and others an article of a neat and substantial nature, and at the same time one of great convenience.
A spiral spring, h, on the pivot b allows the jaws A and B to be opened to receive the edge of the hat, cap, or other form of head-dress, and supplies the jaw with sufficient power to support it.
The ring D is for attaching the clasp to any projection not especially intended as a hat-support, while the sharpened hooked portion of require special places to keep from injury, can
by using this clasp be hung on any surface, and at the same time be free from such injury. The curved portion of the two sides of the jaw allows the rim a receptacle, at the same time allowing a better hold on the mainbody.
As before stated, the clasp can' be made of such a size as not to be burdensome to carry, at the same time neatly constructed, thus supplying an article of toilet which will be valuable in the capacity of a hat-rack.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Asa new article of manufacture, a hat-clasp one end of the main jaw of which is made in hook shape and has also swiveled to it a ring, D, for the purposes setforth.
WILLIAM EWING.
