Description

(No Model.) J. BROOME.
HAT HOLDER. v No. 290,735. S Patented Dec. 25, 1 883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR- omwfl MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. BROOME, or oswneo, NEW YORK.
HAT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,735, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed July 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. BROOME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in swinging hooks, and has for its object to provide a ready and cheap means of hanging hats to church-seats, or supporting other articles such as parasolsand when not in use to be turned out of the way, so as not to interfere with clothing, &c. This object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a transverse section of a churchseat with the hook in position to receive ahat or other object. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the seat with hooks turned out of the way. Fig. 3 is a detached view of a modification Fig. 4, an end View of rail. Fig. 5 is an end view of rail 0 detached from the seat, and showing the channel D and hook in a modified form.
The letter A represents a seat.
B is the back.
0 is a strip attached thereto, and may extend the whole length of the seat. It is provided with a channel, in which is fitted a slide of wood or metal, D, which slides freely therein.
E is a hook pivoted to the slide-block D by the screw or pivot f, by means of which it may be turned on its axis. When in use, the hook E is turned outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. When not, it is turned in a direction parallel to the back of the seat, as shown in Fig. 2, and is thereby placed entirely out of the way.
The rail 0 may be made of any desired length, either of wood or metal, or partly of each, and it may be provided with any desired number of hooks E.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the channel 0 for the slide D is formed of sheet metal which may be at taohed to the rail C, or be fastened directly to the back of the seat. In these figures (3 and 4) the slide D is of metal and the hook E is formed of wire bent into the required form.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and to claim, 1s
1. A seat-back, B, having a rail, 0, provided with channel D, in combination with slide D, having hook E pivoted thereto, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a church-seat having back B, the rail 60 0, having channel D, in combination with slide D, pivot f, and swinging hooks E, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 65 presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH B. BROOME.
