SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,443, dated April 29, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN 7N BRUNNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening hats on the heads of ladies; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple yet effective hat-fastener of such construction that it may be adjusted to the various sizes of hats. This object I attain by the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the hat-fastener with the hat-holding bar Sin Fig. 2 removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional top view of a hat secured on my hat-fastener. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line b bin Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is aview of the back of a head-having the hat-holder in a slightly-modified form secured in the hair preparatory to placing the hat on the head.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numorals, 1 represents the hat, 2 the head, while 3 4 5 6 represent the frame of the hat-holder, which consists of an elongated yoke, of which the short end bar 5 is bulged out, so that the free ends of two pins 7 7, secured on the bar 6, may after being inserted in the hair be sprung together and passed up and down, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, at the mid-' dle of the bar 5 and spread above the bar, so as to rest upon its ends. The front bar 3 of the yoke is wider in vertical direction than the rear bar 4 and is penetrated by a horizontal sliding bar 8, having toothed heads 9 screw-threaded upon its ends, or atleast upon one end, so that the bar may be adjusted to engage the front and back of the hat with its teeth 10, which may be of any desired number. Into one end of the bar 3 is screwed the bar 11, having a head 12, with teeth 10 enother side of the hat. a lug 16 projecting upward through a slot 17 gaging one side of the hat, while in the opposite end of the bar 3 is inserted a slidable bar 13, having a toothed head 15 toengage the This sliding bar 13 has in the frame-bar 3 and is provided with a .hole or 1oop18, in which engages the arm 19 of a rock-shaft 20, slidably journaled in a ver tical bearing 21 in a corner of the frameyoke, so that by-taking hold of the operatinglever or finger-hold 21 the shaft may be raised,

with the arm 19, above the locking-notches 22 at one or both sides of the slot 17 and swung so as to slide the bar 13 to or from the hat, and thereby force the hat into and out of engagement with the teeth of the other bars 8 and 11, and when so forced into engagement the shaft 20 is lowered, so that the arm 19 rests in one of the notches 22, and thus holds the hat firmly engaged until it is released by raising of the arm 19 and swinging it in the opposite direction. When the hat is removed, the holder may remain as an ornament in the hair, and where this is desired the holder may be made of various fancy designs.

In Fig. 4 is shown that the frame-bar 4 may be curved upward in the middle like a segment. The other bar 3 and all the bars may be of similar form to make the device look more neat and compact.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hat-fastener comprising a frame having hair-pins for securing it on the head, extensible bars slidingly inserted in the frame and provided at their ends with pronged heads adapted to take hold of the inner sides of the hat, and a vertically-slidable rock-shaft journaled in the frame and having one arm projecting from under the hat, and another arm engaging one of the hat-holding bars, and notches in the frame for saidarm to engage, substantially as and for the purpose'set forth.
