To all Z whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn R. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, "residing at Shelby'ville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Tie Holders and Pressing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for holding ties and for pressing the same when the ties are not in use.
The invention embodies, among other fea-v tures, a'frame consisting of a plurality of connected plate sections, one mounted to swing on the other, with a rack carried by one of the sections andadapted to supportties whichdepend between the sections, with means for exerting pressure against one of the sections to move the sections together and firmly press the ties therebetween.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the same in closed position to support and press ties; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the article in open position, the ties having been removed therefrom; Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing the article in open position; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the back plate section, the front plate section having been removed; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view showing the attachingplate and screw for supporting the device on a wall; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the attaching plate, the screw being shown in crosssectiop in supporting position.
vReferring moreparticularly to the views, I employ a frame 10 consisting of a rear plate section 1 1 and a front plate section12, a tierack 13 being mounted to swing on the upper end of the rear plate section 11 and including an upright 14 mounted to swing on a threaded pin- 15 passing through-the upper portion of the rear plate section'rli,
plate-section 11, the said rear plate section a thumb nut 16 being threaded on the pin to engage the upright 14 and bind the same" with respect to the rear plate section in order to secure the rack 13 in as adjusted position, a series of lateral supporting rods 17 being extended in a horizontal direct-ion from the upright 14 as shown, to support a series of ties 18 adapted to depend between the rear plate section 11 and the front plate section 12.
Bearings 19 are secured to the front platesection 12 to support a member 20, 'the said member being preferably formed of a single I piece of material such as spring-like wire and bent in a U-shaped form to provide a member 20 on the front plate section 12, as
will be hereinafter more fully disclosed, the
free ends of the handle being bent-to form? books 23 having, pivotal connection -with-- headed pins 24 secured in the rear plate sec tion, the said hooks, however, being removable from the said pins when it is desired to insert ties between the front and rear plate sections.
The medial portions of the handle 21 are coiled to provide springs 25 which loosely encircle the pin thus supporting the member 20 in .a'swinging position on the front plate section, aswill be seen by referring to Figs. 1 and 4:. Now it will be apparcut that when the member 20 is inthe position shown in Fig.- 3, the front and rear plate sections being in spaced relation, or in what may be termed semi-open position, and an upward pull. is exerted on the handle 21, the resultant action of the springs 25 will cause the front plate section to move" upwardly'and slightly toward the rear plate section until the two plate sections are ar ranged in the position shown in Fig. 2, and when the handle 21 is pressed farther upwardly, the tension exerted by the springs will cause the plate sections to move together and press the ties 18 therebetween, tl1e upper endof the handle being secured in closed position by a securingv strap 26 mounted to swing on the'front plate section 12.
The lower ends of the front and rear plate sections 11 and 12 are connected by suitable chains-.27 as shown and in order to permitof supporting the entire device on a wall 28, disclosed in Fig. 6, an attaching plate 29; is secured to the rear face of the rear being provided with a cut-away portion 30 adapted to register with a bayonet slot 31, forme in the plate 29, so that when aheaded screw 32 is secured in the wall 28 as shown, it is only necessary to apply the device to the wall so that the headed screw will pass through the enlarged portion of the slot 31 and then when the device is released the screw will pass into the restricted or smaller portion of the slot to prevent the disengagement of the device from the screw, this being accomplished by having the head of the screw larger'than the restricted portion of the slot, and thus the device will be supported on the wall 28 and cannot accidentally become detached therefrom. Now when it is desired to press ties between the plate sections 11 and 12, the handle 21 isiirst disengaged from the securing strap 26 and willthen assume the semi-open position disclosed in Fig. 3. The hooks 23 are detached from the pins 24 and the front plate section swung downwardly and away from the rear plate section. The ties 18 are now placed upon the rack 13 by hanging the same upon the supporting rods 17 and when this has been accomplished the front plate section is swung upwardly and the hooks 23 are reengaged with the pins 24 so that the ties 18 will depend between the front and rear plate sections. Now when the handle 21 is swung upwardly the front plate section will be carried therewith until the front plate section lies adjacent to the rear plate section as shown in Fig. 2 and as an additional upward pressure is exerted on the handle 21, the springs 25 will exert a tension on:
thohooks 28, thus causing the front and rear plate sections to move toward each other and press the ties therebetween.
When the handle has been moved to its uppermost distance it will be received beneath the securing strap 26 and locked in closed position, and the ties 18 depending between the front and rear, plate sections will be pressed tberebetween by the tension of the springs 25 tending to press the front and rear plate sections together.
It will be apparent that with a device of the character described a large number of ties can be arranged to depend from the rack and lie between the front and rear plate sections and the ties will not-only be supported by the device but will also be pressed and retain their shape. It will be further apparent that various departures can be made from the construction disclosed in the drawings without departing from' when not in use, the scope of the invention being defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: q
1. In atie supporting and pressing device, the combination with a front plate section, of a rear plate section, a spring-actuated member mounted to swingion the front plate section and having connection with the rear plate section, a rack adjustably supported on the rear plate section and adapted to sup port ties depending between the said plate sections, and asecuring strap mounted to swing on the front plate section to be engage by the said member and secure the same in locked position to clamp the depending portions of the ties between the said plate sections.
2. In a tie supporting and pressing device, the combination with a front plate section, of a rear plate section, a spring-actuated handle mounted to swingon the front plate section and having connection with the rear plate section for normally moving'the sections together, a rack carriedby the rear plate section and adapted to support ties having portions depending between the plate sections and adapted to be pressed therebetween when the said handle is in uppermost position on the front plate section, a strap for securing the handle in.

3. In a he supporting and pressing device, the combination with a plurality of plate sections, of a member connecting the plate sections and having a portion thereof constituting an integral spring, the said -member being adapted to move the said plate sections together and clamp ties therebetween.
