GEORGE H. HARTWELL, OF CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXTENSION- EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,608, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed March 29, 1888.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HARTWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Easels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in picture-supports; and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and durable device, which will be extensible to enable it to receive pictures of different sizes; and, furthermore, to provide a support which will engage the upper and lower edges of the picture, and thus hold it from beingjarred out of place.
The invention consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement ofdevices, fully set forth hereinafter, and illustrated in the aceompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the support embodying my improvements. Fig. 2is alongitndinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A repre sents the frame of the support, which consists of the divergent side rods, 13 B, which are formed from a single piece of wire and are con nected at their upper ends by the loop F. The lower ends of the side rods, B, are provided with hooks C C to bear on the surface which supports the device, and a channeled or grooved rest, D, is attached at its ends to the side rods near their lower ends. A central halfround rod, E, is arranged between the side rods, B, and is attached at its lower end to the center of the channeled or grooved rest and at its upper end to the loop F, which connects the side rods.
A stationary sleeve, G, is attached to the rod E, near its upper end, and the said sleeve is provided with the rearwardly-extending parallel ears H H, between which the upper end of the swinging leg I is mounted. The swinging leg is also provided at its lower end with a hook, K.
A sliding half-round rod, L, is mounted in the sleeve G and is provided at its lower end Serial No. 268,834. (No model.)
with the sleeve M, which slides on the rod E. A notch or depression, N, is formed in the I front side of the loop F at its center, whereby the sliding rod is let into the frame to bring its outer or front side flush with the face of the frame.
A channeled or grooved clip or clasp, O, is attached to the upper end of the sliding rod, and it will be seen that the same may be raised and lowered at will. The picture is engaged at its lower edge in the grooved or channeled rest D and at its upper edge in the grooved or channeled clip or clasp, whereby it is held firmly in position. It will be observed that the weight of the sliding clip and rod will normally hold the former in engagement with the upper edge of the picture.
The half-round central rod and the halfround sliding rod together form a round rod, which corresponds in appearance with the other parts of the support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a picture-support, the combination of the frame having the rest D, the central hall"- round rod, E, provided with a stationary sleeve,G,the sliding half-round rod L, mounted in the sleeve G, and having a sleeve, M, embracing the rod E, and the clip or clasp on the upper end of the sliding rod, substantially as specified.
2. In a picturesupport, the combination, with the frame A, having the divergent side rods, B, and the rest D, attached thereto, of the central rod, E, the stationary sleeve G on the central rod and having the parallel ears H, the swinging leg pivoted between the said ears, and the sliding rod mounted in the sleeve G and having a clip or clasp on its upper end, substantially as specified.
In tcstimonythatl claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. HARTWELL.
