PATENT rrien.
BENJAMIN G. WALLACE, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
ADJUSTABLE PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,060, dated MayfSO, 1905.
Application filed September l, 1903. Serial No. 171,549.
To rtl?, whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Gr. WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Picture-Hanger, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof.
My invention relates to means for the hanging of picture-frames in a convenient and at the same time artistic manner; and to this end it has for its object to attach to the back of the picture-frame a contrivance adapted to adjustably secure the picture-frame to a rod hanging from the picture-molding or nail, the contrivanee as a Whole being adapted to hang the picture at any convenient height and angle of inclination.
I accomplish my object by a curved spanner, adapted to be fastened to the back of any picture-frame, on which spanner is adjustably mounted a box made with a longitudinal aperture or slot in which to receive a hooked rod and provided with means for securing such rod in its adjusted position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective the back of a picture-frame having my improved hanger attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section of the adjustable contrivance provided for securing the Spanner c to the hanging-rod. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same contrivance shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section of the box e, and Fig. 6 isla cross-section of said box e.
The letters designate the parts referred to.
My picture-hanger is adapted to be attached to a picture-frame of any Size; but in order to make my picture-hanger of a uniform size for the market when the Spanner c is shorter than required to span the frame to which it is to be attached a board must first be secured to the back of the frame and my Spanner in such case being attached to said board.
The contrivances comprised in my picturehanger are a spanner c, preferably made of metal and curved substantially as shown. One of the extremities of such Spanner c', for example-is preferably forked in order that the Spanner may be rigidly fastened to the back of the picture-frame. Both of its extremities are provided with holes in which are inserted thumb-screws d to fasten the Spanner onto the frame.
On the Spanner is adjustably mounted a box e, the construction of which is observable from the sections thereof shown in Figs. 5 and 6. It is made with longitudinal passages f g. In the passage f is inserted the Spanner c, and the box is secured in its adjustable position on the Spanner by means of a set-screw t. In the passage c7 is inserted the hangingrod t', made with a hook vl. The rod t' is made with a rack edge 2 and is held in its adjustedposition by means of a lever-dog j', supported by a pivot-pin Z in perforated lugs m and controlled-that is to say, held in this engaging position-by means of a spring n. Thus by the adjustment of box e one can arrange to incline the picture at any desirable angle with respect to the perpendicular wall back of it, and by next pressing on the extremity of the dog j the hanging-rod @I may be adjusted in accordance with the height the picture is to hang.
For convenience of operation I believe it best that the hanging-rod t' be made with a rack-face 2 and that a spring-controlled dog be provided to engage such rack-face and secure the hanging-rod in its adjustable position. However, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to such precise construction, for other Well-known means might be substituted for securing the hanging-rod.
The hanging-rod rl may be made of varying sizes convenient for hanging the picture at the desired height.
All the parts of my invention are to be neatly and durably made, and sinceit is aconvenient matter to secure a board like a to the back of any picture-frame my Spanner c may be made of a convenient size which Will be practical for use upon picture-frames of varying sizes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a frame, a curved sp'anner the extremities of which are fastened IOO to the frame, a box adjustably' Seeured on said spanner, a hanging-rod adjustably inserted in said box, and means for Securing the box and thev hanging-rod, respectively, in their adjusted positions; said hanging-rod being adapted to be suspended by its upper extremity, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a frame, a curved spanner the extremities of which are fastened to the frame, a box made with two longitudinal passages, in one of which is adjustably inserted said Spanner, a hanging-rod adjustably inserted in the other said passag'es, and means for securing the box, and the hanging-rod, respectively, in their adjusted positions, said hanging-rod being adapted to be suspended by its upper extremity, substantially as described.
3. A picture-hanger, comprising' a curved spanner, the extremities of which are adapted to be fastened to a frame, a box adapted to be adjustably secured on said spanner, ahangingrod adjustably inserted in said box, and means.
for securing the box and the hangingfrd, re.- spectiv'ely, in their adjusted positions; said hangingrod, being adapted to be suspended by its upper extremity, substantially as described.
4:. A picture-hanger, Comprising a curved Spanner the extremities of which are adapted to be Jfastened to a frame, a box made with two longitudinal passages, in one of which is adjustably inserted said Spanner; a hanging'- rod adjustably inserted in the other of said passages, and means for securing the box, and the hanging-rod, respectively, in their adjusted positions; said hanging-rod being adapted to be suspended by its upper extremity, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
