PRATT.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RANSOM PRATT, OF CORNING, NEW YORK.
PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,069, dated February 22,1887.
Application filed December 1, 1886. Serial No. 220,394. (No model.)
.TO all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANSOM PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning,
' in the county of Steuben and State of New picture-frame York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hangers, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the suspending cord or wire of a picture may be lengthened or shortened, thereby lowering or raising the picture-frame without removing the said frame from the wall or being obliged to tie knots in said cord or wire, as is the case with hangers now in general use. I attainthese results by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a picture frame, showing the manner of attaching my improved hanger thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of my hanger. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of same.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates a picture-frame, and B the suspending-cord thereof.
0 is a cylindrical or barrel-shaped metallic casting, having the circular opening D to receive the cord or wire B.
E is a thumb-screw adapted to enter a threaded opening, E, in the side of the cast mg C, and bind the cord or wire B between the end of said thumb-screw and the opposite side of the cylindrical opening I) in the said casting.
G is a screw having one end, I, threaded to enter the threaded opening H in the casting G, opposite to threaded opening E in said casting, and the other end, J, adapted to screw into the frame A, as shown in Fig. 1. This screw Gis firmly seated in the threaded opening H in the casting G and held from movement."
The operation of my invention, as will be readily seen, is as follows: One of my improved picture-hangers is fastened to each side of the back of the frame, slightly above the middle of the height thereof, by screwing the end J of the screw G- in the wood of said frame. Said screw is screwed in until the casting 0 comes against the frame, when the circular opening D must be turned to a vertical position. The cord or wire B is now inserted into the said circular opening D, and when the length of cord or wire above the castings is of the proper length the thumbscrews E are tightened against the saidcord or wire, and the frame is now ready to be hung. In order to lower or raise the picture after being hung upon the wall, it is only necessary to loosen one of the thumb-screws, and, after adjusting the picture to the desired height, to tighten said thumb-screw as before. After the thumb-screw has been loosened to adjust the cord or wire, there is a danger that the frame might be dropped, and as the cord would slip easily through the opening in the casting the picture would fall. To guard against such a mishap aknot should be tied in the end of the cord below the casting, of sufficient size to prevent its slipping through the said opening in the casting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a picture-frame hanger, the casting 0, having the opening D and thumbscrew E, combined with the screw G, one end of which is adapted to screw into the opening H and the other end into the frame of the picture, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the picture-frame HANSON: PRATT.
