SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,654, dated May 15, 1883. Application filed March 6,1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: s

Be it known that I, ELBERT E. ALDERMAN, of Portville, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a device for holding bags while being filled; and it consists of the construction,arrangement,and combinationsof parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved bag-holder, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.

A represents a cast-iron frame thatis adapted to be secured in a vertical position to the wall of a mill, barn, or other building by means of screws, bolts, orclamps. This frame is formed upon its front face with the notches a, and is formed with the inwardly-projecting flanges b b, with which latter the T-studfof the sliding head B is adapted to engage for locking the said head and frame A together, and at the upper end of the frameAthese flanges b b are cut away, as shown at c 0, so that the head B may be attached to and detached from the frame A. Thesliding head B, besides being formed with the T-stud fat the back thereof, is formed also with the lip 0 near its lower end, that is adapted to rest in the notches a of the frame A, and with the stud d between the lip c and the T-stud f, which serves to prevent all lateral movement of the sliding head B in or upon the frame A. Upon its upper end the sliding head B is formed or provided with the gudgeon g, which is squared at its lower portion, as shown at t, and formed with the upper round portion, i. Upon the squared portion 2' is fitted the curved arm 0, which is held rigidly by the gudgeon, and upon the round portion 73- of the gudgeon is placed the curved arm 0, which is held in place thereon by a pin passing through the gudgeon, as shown, and this arm 0 is normally held back away or open from thejaw G to the position shown in Fig. 1 by the coiled spring h, attached thereto and to the head 13, as shown.

In use the arm 0 will be drawn forward toward the arm 0 and held while the open end of the bag to be filled is placed over or upon the arms. The arm 0' will then be released, whereupon the spring It will draw it back, and

thus hold the bag upon the arms and hold the upper end of the bag open. The sliding head B will then be raised in the frame A to rest upon the notches a, that suit the length of the bag, thus causing the bag to be held with just its bottom resting upon the door, in position to be properly and easily filled.

For holding the bag upon the arms 0 G with perfect security, I notch or serrate the outer edges of the arms, as shown in Fig. 1.

The device constructed in this manner is verycheap, durable, easily handled, and may be adjusted to ba gs of various sizes and lengths, so that it is perfectly practical for its purpose, and by detaching the head B from the frame A the whole device is entirely out of the way when not in use; and it is designed to have several of the frames A secured to the wall at different parts of the building where a bagholder may be needed for use, so that a single sliding head, B G C, may be used with any one of them, as circumstances require; or the bag-holder may be attached toasuitable stand which may be moved from place to place where the bag-holder may be needed for use.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the frame A, having notches a and flanges Z), the latter cutaway at c, with the head B, having stud cl, lip c, and stud f, the rigid arm 0, and the springheld arm 0, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The head B, having gudgeon g, squared at z and rounded at i, in combination with the curved arms 0 0, held respectively on said gudgeon and the spring h, connecting the head and arm 0, as shown and described.
