UNITED STATES JAMES WRIGHT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE HANGERS FOR MIRRORS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,825, dated December 23, 1873 application filed November 15, 1873.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES WRIGHT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Hangers for Mirrors, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved hanger, shown with a mirror-frame suspended in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the saine, taken through the line x ar, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section taken through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section taken through the line z z, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an' improved device designed especially for hanging mirrors, but which may be used for hanging pictures, Src., and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and convenient in use, enabling the mirror or picture to be h un g without injuring the plastering or cutting the wood-work of the house, and without the use of step-ladders or other contrivances for attaining the requisite height. The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a strip of wood of suitable length and size, in the upper end of which is formed a hole to receive the nail or spike, and which should be hushed with metal to prevent Wear, and should be larger in its lower part to allow the head of the nail topass through, and narrower in its upper part to receive and 'fit upon the body of the nail. In the rear side of the strip A is formed a wide groove, and upon its lower end is formed a tongue, which is slotted nearly its whole length. B is a strip of wood similar in size to the strip A, and which has a tongue formed upon its upper end to fit int-o the groove of the strip A,
and a groove upon the forward side of its lower part to receive and t upon the tongue of the said upper part A. The tongues and grooves should be dovetailed to keep them in place. To the strip B, at or near the base of its tongue, is secured a square-bodied bolt, 0,' which passes through the slot of the tongue of the strip A, and has a thumb-nut, D, screwed upon its .forward end, so that the two strips A B lmay be securely clamped in any position into which. they may be adjusted. To thev upper end of the tongue of the strip B is attached a strap or band, E, through which the strip A passes, and upon the forward side of Which is formed a hook, F, to receive the suspension-cord of the mirror or picture. The band E thus serves also as a guide or keeper for the 'strip A. To the lower end of the strip B is attached a shelf, G, upon which the lower end of the mirror or picture frame rests. The shelf G may be provided with a drawer, H, which may serve as a receptacle for various small articles. With this construction, the hook E F and shelf G being always at the same distance apart, the mirror or picture will always have the desired slant when it has been once adjusted. v
In using the hanger, the strip A is hung upon the nail. Then by loosening the nut D the strip B may be moved up or down to adjust the mirror or picture to the desired height.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of grooved and tongued ystrips A B, the former sliding upon the latter,
and the latter having a shelf, G, with the clamp C D and band-hook E F, as and for the purpose specified.
I JAMES VVBIGHT.
