UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
DOMINIO GOLDEN, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,527, dated May 11, 1897. Application filed February 13, 1897. Serial No. 623,308. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOMINIO GOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rein-holders, and more particularly to that class which can be removably attached to the dashboard of vehicles; and the object is to provide an economical, simple, durable, and effective device of this class.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, to be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rein-holder, and Fig. 2 a cross-sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a base-plate with which are integrally formed the clamp-jaws 2. In the rear pair of said clamp-jaws, as related to proper position of holder on dashboard, are the set-screws 3, the oiiice of which is obvious. The top of said base-plate 1 is inclined downwardly to the rear, and its surface is serrated or otherwise roughened and conforms to the inclination of the roughened face of the swinging dog or cam-faced pawl 4, which hangs normally with its roughened face resting upon corresponding face of the base-plate l. The said pawl is provided with the longitudinal orifice 6, through which is inserted the journal 7, the
said journal being riveted or otherwise rigidly fixed at each end in the upper ends of the arms 5, said arms being suitably orificed for its reception. The said arms 5 are formed integral with the front clamp-jaws 2 and baseplate 1 and are placed a sufficient distance apart and also a sufficient distance from the ends of said base-plate 1 to admit of the reins being placed one under each end of the pawl 4 or together inserted thereunder between the said arms 5, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To hold the pawl 4 firmly down upon the reins, I provide the spiralsprings 8 8, which encircle the journal 7 and have their ends anchored to the said journal and pawl. The springs 8 8 also serve to keep the said pawl from longitudinal movement upon the said journal 7.
That the reins may be easily and quickly inserted in the holder, the ends of the baseplate 1 are curved downwardly at 9 9 and the ends of the cam-faced portion of the pawl curved upwardly at 10 10.
In'the operation of this holder it will be readily observed that a forward strain on the lines automatically wedges them firmly between the pawl and base-plate,and the greater the strain the firmer they are held. -As an additional means for holding the pawl securely down upon the reins I provide a thumbscrew 9 in the top of said pawl in such position as to screw firmly down .upon journal 6 and hold the pawl immovable to any sudden or unusual strain, and also to be used as a lever in tilting said pawl when placing the reins thereunder.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, strong, and safe device for this purpose, and thus dispense with weights, hitching-straps, and other annoyances commonly used to prevent teams from starting while left unattended.
While I have particularly described the manner of carrying out my invention, various modifications of the same will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a rein-holde r, the combination of a base-plate 1, its upper surface serrated or roughened and inclined downwardly to the rear, clamp-jaws formed integral therewith, set-screws in said clamp-jaws, each end of the said base-plate 1 curved downwardly, integral parallel arms 5 projecting upwardly from said base-plate, journal 7 in said arms, springs 8 S encircling said journal and engagin g therewith, the pawl 4c hinged on said jour nal and connected with springs 8 8 and its lower end coming in contact with and extending the length of said base-plate 1, the surface of said pawl which strikes the anvil of said base-plate suitably roughened and inclined to conform with the inclination of said anvil, the said pawl curved upwardly at each end, 10 10, a thumb-screw in the top of said pawl and adapted to be screwed down upon journal 7 substantially as set forth and for the purpose shown.
2. A rein-holder comprising the base-plate 1, provided with the integral parallel jaws 2 2, provided with the transverse set-screws 3 3 and having a rearwardly-inclined and longitudinally-serrated upper face and a pair of forwardly and upwardly projecting integral DOMINIC GOLDEN.
