NITED STATES ATENT THILL=HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,835, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed August 8, 1888. Serial No. 282,221. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND H. TURNER, of Fergus Falls, in the county of Otter Tail and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Thill-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters-0f reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the front ofa vehicle having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of a portion of the axle and thills, showing the spring for elevating the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the dash-board, showing the thill or tongue holder.
To the dash-board A is attached, by theloop a and ring b,the strap B. This strap is provided at its lower end with one or more hooks, 0. These are adapted to engage wit-h the staple O, secured to the under surface of the crosspiece D of the thills E, for supporting the thills in elevated position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. To the axle F is secured, by a plate, G, and clips H H,the curved spring J, which is formed at its outer end with the laterallyprojecting lug J. The said spring J is attached to the axle adjacent to one side of the thill, so that the lug J reaches under one thill, as'shown clearly in Fig. 2, so that when the thills are released the said spring will elevate -them,so that the strap 13 may be readily passed through the staple G and one or the other of the hooks c engaged therewith. The spring J serves also to relieve the horse of the Weight of the thills in driving.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The loop a, attached to the inner surface of the dash-board near its upper edge, the strap B, attached to said loop, adapted to be swung over the top of the dash-board, and provided at its free end with the hooks c, in combination with the cross-piece D of the thills and the staple 0, attached thereto, substantially as described.
2. The spring J, secured to the axle and formed with the projection J, adapted to engage With the thills or tongue, in combination with the strap 13, attached to the dash-board and adapted to be attached to the cross-piece D, substantially as described.
EDMUND H. TURNER.
