Description

Patntad July l0,;l900.
.1. L. PANGLE.
HORSE DETACHEIL (Application filed Mar. 16, 1900.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE LEE PANGLE, OF ATHOL, IDAHO.
HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,394, dated July 10, 1900. Application filed March 16, 1900- Serial No. 8,946- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE LEE PANGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athol, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detaehers, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horse-detachers; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable, which may be quickly operated, and which will be efficient in use.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is an end view showing in dotted lines the singletree in position for releasing the traces. Fig. 4: is a section on line x or, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a thill cross-pin having a passage 2 therethrough at the center, within which is fitted a cylindrical box 3, as shown. Projecting down into this box is a hollow pin 4, in ternally threaded and adapted to receive a screw or bolt 5, inserted into the cross-pin from the bottom thereof. This pin 4 is swiveled to a cylindrical hub 6, slotted upon one side, as at 7, and provided upon the bottom with a preferably-circular stud or projection 8, adapted to bear upon the end of the box 3.
Projecting from the upper surface of the hub 6 is a secondstud 9, internally threaded and adapted to receive a screw 10, passing through a brace-strengthening strip 11, arranged back of and underthe cross-pin l and secured thereto by means of the bolt or screw 5, before mentioned.
Within the hub 6 is revolubly mounted a singletree 12, provided with a metallic sleeve 13, adapted to bear upon the inner surface of huh 6. Alevcr, as 14, projects from said singletree and out through the slot 7 in the hub and is provided at its end with means, as a chain 15, whereby the same may be readily raised from a point upon the vehicle to which the device is attached.
Each end of the singletree 12 is provided with a hook 16, which bends back in a horizontal plane when the lever 14: is at its lower most point. These hooks are adapted to be engaged by the traces. It is obvious that when the lever 14: israised the singletree will be turned Within the hub, thereby throwing the hooks 16 forward and releasing the traces. In this manner a runaway or unmanageable horse may be quickly released from a vehicle.
f In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- In a detacher the combination, with a crosspin; of a boxwithin the upper surface thereof 3 a slotted hub; a pin swi veled thereto at the bottom and projecting into the box and cross-pin, said box serving as a bearing for the hub; a stud swiveledto the hub; abrace extending over and secured to the stud; a screw engaging said brace and the lower pin and retaining the same in position; a tree revoluble within the hub; hooks at the ends thereof; and a lever secured to the tree and projecting through the slot. 7 JESSE LEE PANGLE. Witnesses:
FRANK WENZ, JNo. O. OALLAHAN.
