Description

W. N. SANTEE.
Blips for Whiifletrees.
Patented July 28,1874.
v N0.l53,497.
I IIVUII %W4 itn'esscs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLARD N. SANTEE, OF THE DALLES, OREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLIPS FOR WHIFF LETREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,497, dated July 28. 1874; application filed May 15, 1874.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD N. SANTEE, of The Dallcs, Wasco county, State of Oregon, have invented an Improved Clip for Single- Trees; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a clip for the ends of double-trees, and the ends and middle of single-trees, which can be read ily removed in case the double-tree or singletree should be broken, and as easily applied to another.
In order to explain my invention so that others will understand its construction and ar-- ran gement, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is aperspective View of my device.
Let A represent the end of a double-tree or single-tree. The clip B is a piece of sheet or plate metal bent in the form of a U, so as to clasp the end of the single-tree in the usual way. The ends of this U plate or clip are extended out in front of the single-tree or doubletree, as the case may be, so as to form parallel lugs or end pieces 0. To each lug or end piece I secure a hook, d, the lower one hooking upward, while the upper one is bent downward,
so that when the two lugs or endpieces are parallel the bent ends of the hooks will envelop each other and form a ring, in which the trace-hook e is held. Through each lug or end piece 0 I make a hole, so that a bolt, f, can be passed down through the holes until the head of the bolt rests on the upper lug.
A nut, g, then serves to draw the two lugs together and clamp the clip Bfirmly to the end of the whiffletree or, double-tree.
In case the sin gle-tree or double-tree should be broken, the clips can be removedby loosening the nut g, so as to allow the U-shaped clip to spread apart and slip off the end of the tree, when it can be secured on the end of another single-tree in the same manner as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is-
1. The open clip B, with its end lugs U land overlapping hooks d, in combination with the clamping-bolt f and nut g, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
2. An open clip, B, single or double'trce A, bolt f, and nut 9, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
WILLARD N. SANTEE.
