B. P. STUART. 'JIABLET4 HOLDER.
No. 538,712.- Patented May '7, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT Genion.,
BENJAMIN FSTUART, OF WAGO, TEXAS.
`TABLET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,712, dated May 7, 1895.
Application led May 26, 1894. Serial No. 512,549. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented 'a new and useful Tablet-Holder, of which thefollowing is a specication.
Myinvention relates to tablet-holders for stenographers, clerks, copyists, dro.; and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efcient device for supporting a tablet while taking notes or while copying therefrom; and to provide improved means for securing the tablet to the supporting plate or board of the holder. v
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention, showing a tablet arranged in the operative position thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the holder in its inclined or copying position, the tablet being omitted. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a section partly broken away.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
l designates a supporting plate or board adapted to serve as a backing for the tablet 2, while taking notes, said tablet being preferably constructed of loose leaves provided with perforations 3 at the center of the upper ends for engagement with a loose cord 4. The curved file pins 5,` which engage perfo` rations 6 near the side edges of the tablet are carried by a transverse plate 7, which is hinged to the supporting board or plate at its upper edge, and these tile pins are provided with rear loops 8, which extend beyond the rear surface ofthe supporting plate or board, whereby as the leaves of the tablet are used they may be turned back and caused to lie iiat against the rear surface of the plate or board. The front ends or extremities of the file pins are received in sockets or depressions 9 in the front surface of the plate or board when the hingedV plate is in its normal posit-ion, as shown in the drawings. Said hinged plate is held in the normal position by means of a pivotal spring catchl l0.
It will be understood that to engage the tablet with the le pins it is necessary simply to disengage the catch from the hinged plate and turn the said plate back in order to Withdraw the extremities of the pins from their receiving sockets, after which the parts are returned to the position shown in Figs. l and 4.
Connected to the rear side of the support- .ing plate or board is a leg ll formed of a single blank of wire or rod and having an enlarged or spread lower portion l2 to rest upon the surface of a table or stand and upper lateral arms i3, which are mounted in bearing-clips 14 secured to the plate or board. The extremities of said lateral armsare turned up to form stop lingers l5 to limit the movement of the lower end of the leg from the plane of the plate or board.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minorchanges in the details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacri- Iicing any of the advantages thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A tablet holder having a plate or board, and curved tile-pins mounted upon the plate to swing in planes perpendicular thereto, and provided with rearwardly extending looped portions which project in rear of the plane of the plate and forwardly projecting free ends l which are normally arranged contiguous to the front surface of the plate, the swinging movement of the pins providing for the removal of their free ends from the plane of the plate to permit of engaging or disengaging a tablet, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a plate or board, of a hinged plate, file pins carried by said hinged plate and having loops 8 extending rearwardly beyond the rear surface of the supporting plate or board, and means for holding said hingedy plate in its operative position, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. STUART.
Witnesses:
