COMBINED HAT AND BOOK HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed October 15, 1906- Serial No. 339,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN M. KING and EDWARD O. RUssELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hat and Book Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device intended for use as a combined holder for a hat and book and is particularly applicable for attachment to the rear of a church pew or a theater seat.
The invention consists of a spring backed lever adapted to hold the hat and a curved sheet spring so arranged as to receive and hold a book or other object.
The invention is more fully described in the accompanying specifications and 0 early illustrated in the drawing forming a part of this application.
In the drawingz-Figure 1 shows our device in posil'fon on the back of a pew and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with the pew shown in section.
The numeral 1 designates a pew or seat. The numeral 2 designates an opening or hole therein one of which is made at the point where the holders are to be placed.
The numeral 3 designates the book holder and this comprises a single piece of spring sheet metal, bent to form a suitable receptacle at its topior holding the book and held in position by means of the screw that holds the hat holder to the pew.
The numeral 4 designate; the plate and 5 the lever. This plate is formed with a spur- 6 near its upper end on the back and with two cars 7 on its front face between which the lever 5 is pivoted. The plate is also formed with a friction disk 8 of cork or other suitable material, near the lower end of the front face.
A coiled spring 9 is seated in the opening 2 in the seat back and rests against the under side of the upper end of the lever 5, a lug 10 being formed thereon to engage the spring. This spring tends to keep the lower end of the lever in normal contact with the lower end of the plate, preferably at the point of the lriction disk.
The plate is secured to the back of the pew by means of a single screw 11 and as this screw is drawn up the teat 6 is forced into the wood of the seat back thus preventing the plate turning.
The spring plate 3 is formed with openings which register with the opening 2 in the pew; the spur; and the screw 11, so that when the plate is to be placed in position this book holding spring plate is interposed between it and the pew back and this one screw secures the entire device in position.
The friction disk is intended to prevent the too easy or accidental release of the article held.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
A hat holder for church pews, comprising a plate having a perforation to receive a fastening screw, and provided with two perforated ears on its front face, at the top, and a spur on the rear face, a friction disk secured in the front face of said plate, near the lower end, and a springactuated lever pivo'tally mounted in said ears, the lower end of said lever being bent inwardly and adapted to bear upon the disk.
