Description

Aug. 19, 1958 H. T. ODOM COMBINATION COIN AND PAPER HOLDER Filed March 31, 1955 HAQQY TRACY 000M INVENTOR ATTORNEYS nited States Patent COMBINATION COIN AND PAPER HOLDER Harry Tracy Odom, Winston-Salem, N. C. Application March 31, 1955, Serial No. 498,147
3 Claims. I (Cl. 211-89) This invention relates to a new and improved combination coin and paper holder that has particular relation to holders adapted to be attached inside of a car on a supporting structure such as a sun visor for example.
It is an object of this invention to provide a combination coin and paper holder having a plurality of flexible finger-like members circularly arranged for gripping a coin or paper.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination coin and paper holder which may be easily attached to a supporting structure such as a sun visor in a car and which may be easily detached therefrom for inserting or removing a coin or paper therefrom.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holder which will equally retain large or small coins and papers therein.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a coin and paper holder affording perfect visibility of the coins and papers for the purpose of instantaneous identification.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an isometric view showing the combination coin and paper holder mounted on a sun visor inside of a car;
Figure 2 is a front elevation view on an enlarged scale showing the combination coin and paper holder secured to a sun visor of a car and retaining coins therein;
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the holder attached to a sun visor;
Figure 4 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale taken along line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the holder is provided with a circular base having down turned flanges 11 at opposed side edges thereof which are connected by suitable pivot means 12 to corresponding upturned flanges 13 of a circular back mounting or clamping plate 14. The circular base 10 and clamping plate 14 have opposed abutments or stud portions 15, 16 secured thereto by suitable fastening means such as screws 18 and 19. These abutrnents and 16 penetrate the ends of a resilient member such as coil spring 20 which serves to urge toward each other corresponding base and plate portions 10a and 14a which serve for clamping the holder device to a supporting structure such as a car sun visor 30.
Concentrically arranged to the base 10 and secured thereto by suitable means such as a screw 21 is a circular coin or paper gripping plate or disk 22 provided with a plurality of circularly arranged radially extending resilient finger-like members or projections 23 having upturned ends 23a. The diameter of the gripping plate or disk 22 with the radially extending finger-like members 23 integral therewith is less than the diameter of base 10. Therefore, the outer extremities of the finger-like members 23 terminate a short distance from the edges of plate 10 to enable coins or the like C to readily be inserted between the base 10 and members 23.
Between the gripping plate 22 and base 10 is a circular spacer member 24 which is penetrated by the screw 21. The spacer member 24 has a diameter corresponding with the diameter defined by the juncture of the finger-like members 23 and disk 22. The spacer member 24 serves to permit the finger-like members 23 to be provided with inturned or convex portions 23b (Figure 4) pressing against plate 10 for securely gripping coins and papers inserted therebetween. Also the spacer member facilitates theinsetting of coins between the base and finger-like members.
The base 10, back plate 14, and spacer member 24 may be made of any desired material such as plastic, tempered steel, aluminum and the like. Polystyrene plastic is preferred because of its low cost.
The use of a plastic would lead to a highly pleasing holder since the base 10, back plate 14, gripping plate 22, and spacer member 24 could be made of various contrasting colors, presenting a pleasing product.
It will be obvious that if plastic is employed for the holder, abutments or stud portions 15 and 16 would be molded as an integral part of the base 10, and back plate 14 respectively.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A self-supporting coin holder comprising a base and a clamping plate, resilient means extending between first proximal edge portions of said base and clamping plate and urging the base and clamping plate away from each other adjacent said proximal edge portions, the base and clamping plate converging toward each other from opposite ends of said resilient means to a point where second proximal edges of the base and clamping plate opposed from said first-named proximal edges are urged into engagement with one another by said resilient means, spacing members disposed between said first and second proximal edges and extending toward each other from proximal surfaces of the base and clamping plate, a pivoted fulcrum interconnecting said spacing members, a coin gripping plate arranged in generally parallel spaced relation to the surface of the base remote from the clamping plate, a plurality of radial projections extending from said gripping plate and overlying the base, a spacer disposed between the coin gripping plate and the base and said spacer having a circumference less than the area defined by the juncture of the radial projections with the gripping plate and being confined within said area, and means connecting the gripping plate and the spacer to the base.
2. A self-supporting coin holder adapted to frictionally engage a car sun visor or the like, said coin holder comprising a base and a clamping plate extending in diverging planes from opposed surfaces of the sun visor, means maintaining the base and clamping plate in spaced relation adjacent their medial portions, pivot means disposed between the base and clamping plate and pivotally interconnecting the base and clamping plate adjacent said medial portions, resilient means extending between proximal edge portions of the base and clamping plate remote from the juncture'of the base and clamping plate with the sun visor and normally urging the base and clamping plate into frictional engagement with opposed surfaces of the sun visor, a coin gripping plate connected to the surface of the base remote from the clamping plate, and a 3 plurality of radial projections extending from said gripping plate and overlying the base whereby coins may be held between the radial projections and the base.
3. A self-supporting coin holder adapted to frictionally grip a car sun visor or the like comprising a base and a clamping plate pivotally connected together in spaced relation adjacent their medial portions, resilient means extending between the base and clamping plate adjacent proximal edge portions thereof to urge proximal portions of the base and clamping plate remote from said resilient means toward each other and into engagement with opposed surfaces of the car sun visor, a spacer centrally arranged against the surface of the base remote from the clamping plate and said spacer being of smaller crosssectional area than the base, a coin gripping plate arranged against the spacer and a plurality of resilient projections 4 extending from the gripping plate beyondthe spacer, and the free ends of the resilient projections being normally biased into engagement with the base whereby coins may be held between the projections and the base.
