The holder of the present invention is designed particularly for the holding of band music, and is intended to be mounted upon the music lyre which is ordinarily provided on wind instruments for the holding of sheets of music, particularly in the case of a marching band.

The holder of the present invention is designed to fit onto the music lyre, and serves to protect the music in case of rain or wind, and also protects the music against wear. In cases of this kind, it is important that provision be made for a quick and convenient shifting of the music sheets as occasion may require, and the holder is constructed with this end in view.

Provision is also made for maintaining the sheets of music in a flat condition against the back of the holder and the holder as a whole is simply and cheaply constructed of light sheet metal, preferably of aluminum or brass, which will resist the action of the elements.

Further objects and details of the invention will appear from a description thereof, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,-

The holder consists in the main of a rectangular plate 10 of light, thin, stiff sheet metal, as for instance aluminum or brass, the top and side edges 11 of which are rolled over to reinforce and stiffen the margin of the plate, and the lower edge of the plate is reversely turned to provide a trough 12, the base 13 of which is preferably flattened, as indicated in Fig. d, to afford space for the holding of several sheets of music. The li or flange of the trough preferably stands in diverging relation to the body of the plate to provide for easy insertion of the sheets of music, two of which are indicated at 14,

and to fit back snugly against the face of the plate.

In order to mount the holder in position, it is provided on its rear face with a plate 15, K which is secured at its upper edge by means of rivets 16 and stands in slightly diverging relation to the base plate at its lower free edge in order to permit it to be easily slipped onto the prongs 17 of the music lyre, which affords a suitable and convenient mounting for the holder of the present invention. The angle of the plate 15 will conform to the angle of the lyre on the instrument.

The music sheets are protected by means of f V a transparent window or sheet 19 of celluloid or similar material, which fits into the trough in front of the sheets of music and serves toprotect such sheets from rain, wind, or wear incidental to use.

In order to hold the sheets in place and to maintain them flat against the base plate of the holder, an elastic band 20 is provided, which is looped around the upper portion of the base plate and lies within notches 21 cut into the side edges thereof. The elastic ex- 5 tends uninterruptedly across the front of the holder and in front of the transparent window sheet, and also across the back of the holder, as indicated in dotted lines in 2, and has its ends entered through holes 22 so near the center of the holder, and preferably slightly below the front section of the band, the ends being overlapped at the point 23 on the front side of the holder and beneath the transparent window sheet, and threaded back through the holes 22.

This arrangement enables the band to be quickly slipped up and away from the front side of the sheet to permit the insertion or N removal or rearrangement of the sheets of music and at the same time prevents displacement of the elastic band which remains permanently secured to the holder.

In use, the required number of music sheets F are inserted in position and the transparent window fitted in place in front of the sheets and held by the elastic band, and when so held they will be easily visible through the transparent window and at the same time will be clamped and held against displacement and thoroughly protected against rain or wind.

The transparent sheet is of waterproof material, and the holder as a whole being constructed of non-corrosive metal will not be damaged or injured by moisture.

The device as a whole is extremely simple and may be cheaply constructed, and is so designed that the music sheets can be quickly and conveniently arranged or shifted while marching, which is a feature of importance in an invention of this character.

The device presents a neat and attractive appearance, and the elastic fastening and transparent sheet provide means for the enclosure of any desired number of music sheets, the capacity of the trough permitting a considerable number of sheets to be employed if occasion so requires.

The transparent sheet and the elastic may be easily replaced if necessary, and the dimensions of the holder as a whole may be made sufficient to admit of march size music sheets without obscuring the same from the view of the performer.

I claim:

1. A music holder of the character described, comprising a base plate upturned at its lower edge to furnish a trough adapted to receive the lower edge portion of sheets of music, a removable transparent window sheet having its lower edge held within the trough, and an elastic band engaging the holder and extending across the front of the transparent window sheet at the upper portion thereof for clamping the sheets of music flatly between said window sheet and the holder.

2. A music holder of the character described, comprising a flat base plate upturn ed at its lower edge to furnish a trough adapted to receive the lower edge portions of sheets of music, a transparent window sheet having its lower edge held within the trough, and an elastic band engaging the holder and extending across the front of the transparent window sheet adjacent the upper edge thereof for clamping the same against sheets of music carried by the holder, and a plate secured to the rear face of the holder and adapted to engage with the music lyre of an instrument.

3. A music holder of the character clescribed, comprising a base plate upturned at its lower edge to furnish a trough adapted to receive the lower edge portions of sheets of music, a transparent window sheet having its lower edge held within the trough, and an elastic band encircling the upper portion of the holder and having its: front section extending across the transparent window sheet to clamp the music sheets against the window sheet and base plate, and having its rear section extending across the rear face of the holder, and having the ends entered through to receive sheets of music, a transparent window sheet having its lower edge held Within the trough, and an elastic band encircling the upper portion of the holder and having its front section extending across the transparent window sheet to clamp themusic sheets against the window sheet and base plate, and having its rear section extending across the rear face of the holder, and having the ends entered through holes in the holder and overlapped on the front face thereof, and a plate secured to the rear face of the holder and adapted to engage with the music lyre of an instrument.
