HOLDER AND SUPPORT THEREFOR Filed Oct. 6, 1930 Patented Apr. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HARRY.B. CLEGG, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH CLEGG, F ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOLDER AND SU PPORT THEIREFOR' Application filed October 6, 1930. Serial No. 486,647.
This invention relates to an improved holder and support therefor adapted for use in connection with tables or the like for supporting holder members in a convenient position relative to the table.
' One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which comprises an attaching plate adapted to be secured to the edge of the table in such a manner that it will be relatively inconspicuous and will not interfere with the use of the table generally nor prevent the table from being folded and stored within a small space, and a removable holder member capable ofbeing readily secured to or removed from the attaching plate.
Another-object of the invention relates to the provision of an improved supporting member and the manner of forming the same for holding a circular or cylindrical article securely in place and in an upright position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relate to various improved details of construction and novel arrangements of the parts as will be more fully set forth in the detailed description to follow.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a' perspective view of a portion of a card table showing my improved holder support applied thereto and provided with a holder suitably constructed for holding a drinking glass,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View, partially in section and partially disassembled, showing the manner of connecting the holder support to the table,
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the parts forming one type of holder and the manner of connecting them to the supporting arm, and,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of holder which is adapted to be carried by the supporting arm.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith my improved holder support is shown as applied to the vertical side edge 1 of a card table 2, which may be of any desired type, but is preferably of square or rectangular form as best adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended to be used.
An attaching plate 3 which has its sides bent or shaped as at 1 to form' an ofi-set portion 5, adapted to be positioned in spaced relation with the plane surface 1 of the table edge, is secured to the table edge in any desired manner as by screws 6 or like fastening means. v
A supporting arm 7 has one end 8 thereof bent at substantially right angles to the main portion of the arm, and the bent end portion 8 is formed of such width and thickness as to slidably engage between the off-set portion 5 of the attaching plate and the edge surface 1 of the table while its side edges fitclosely within the bends 4 formed in the plate 3 so that the supporting arm is firmly held against movement relative to the attaching plate 3 and table edge 1 while it is capable of being removed therefrom or replaced therein as may be desired.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 30f the drawings, a drinking glass holder 9'formed from angularly positioned holding strips 10 and 11 is secured to that end of the supporting arm opposite to the angular end 8 thereof. The holding strip 10 comprises a base portion 12 having a central off-set section 14 adapted to fit Within an angular depression 15 formed in the end of the supporting arm Tin such a manner. that the holding strip 10 is held against turning movement on the arm 7 by the sides of the off-set section 14 engaging the edges of the depression 15. The holding strip 11 has a base portion 16 adapted to fit within the central off-set section 1a of the strip 10 when glass or other object of substantially circular cross-section.
In that form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings an ash tray 20, which may be provided with a central depressed portion 21, is secured to the angularly depressed portion of the supporting arm 7'.
V The drinking glass holder 9 and ash tray may be adapted for selective attachment to a supporting arm 7, or each may be provided with a separate supporting arm designedfor removable connection with. the attaching plate 3. In either case the supporting arm taching' plate provided with an off-set portion adapted to be secured to a plane attaching surface, a removable supporting arm having an angular end. adapted for sliding engagement between the off-set portion of said plate and the attachingsurface' and the opposite end shaped to provide a shallow depression having angular shoulders, and a holder member comprising a strip provided with an off-set section engageable with the shallow depression in such a manner that adjacent side edges of the off-set section will fit against the angular shoulders of the depression and prevent pivotal movement of the strip relative to the supporting arm, and means for securing said strip to said supportlng arm.
2; A holder and support therefor comprisingaplate for attachment to a plane surface having an off-set portion spaced from the plane surface to form a slot, a supporting armhaving an end portion located at substantially rignt angles to the remaining portion of said arm, said angular portion being of such size as to fit closely within the slot, the remaining portion of said arm being provided with a depression having shoulders angularly positioned relative to each other, a holder member comprising interfitting strips, one of said strips being provided with an off-set section fitting against the depressed a portion of said arm in such a manner that adjacent sides of said off-set section will engage the angular shoulders and hold the strip against angular movement relative to said arm, and a fastening member passed through the depressed portion of said arm and the off-set section of said strip to hold said strips and arm against separation and cooperate with the angular shoulders to pre-.
vent rotation of the strips relative to the arm. 3. A holder and support therefor comprising a plate for attachment to a plane surface having an off-set portion spaced from'the plane surfaceto form a slot, a supporting arm having an. end portion located at substantially right angles to the remaining portion of said arm, said angular portion being of such size as to fit closely within the slot,
the. opposite'end of said arm being provided with a surface depression separated from the remaining portion of said arm by a pair of.
shoulders I angularly arranged relative to each other, a holder member comprising a pair. of strips each having end-portionsarranged at substantially right angles to the central portions thereof, and one of said A stripshavingan off-set section formed in the central portion of the same, and means for securing said strip to the depressed portion of said supporting arm in sucha manner that adjacent sides of the off-set section formed in one of said strips will engage'the'angulair shoulders carried by said supportingarm and thus hold the strip. against turning movement relative to said arm.-
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
