DAVID A. MIDDLETON, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
BINDER FOR TABLETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
Application filed February 9, 1912. Serial No. 676,535.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. MIDDLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders for Tablets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in binders for tablets and more especially for use with tablets composed of loose leaves.
It has for its object to provide a binder in which a single sheet of paper or a number of sheets of paper will always lie flat and enable the entire surface to be written upon.
It also has for its object to provide a binder with means by which the sheets of paper may be reversed and both sides used to write upon.
It further has for its object to provide a binder which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction, easy to manipulate and very attractive in appearance.
It still further has for its object to pro vide a binder in whi H111, sheets of paper are held securely in position and at the same time are capable of being moved easily and quickly which is especially desirable when being used by stenographers or other rapid writers.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the binder with the sheets of paper thereon ready for use. Fig. 2 a side View. Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 0cw of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 a sectional View on the line y z of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a detail perspective view of the pivoted member of the binder. Fig. 6 a detail plan view of one of the plates 3*. Fig. 7 a detail plan view of one of the plates 6.
In the drawings in which like numerals of reference denote like parts throughout the several views; 1 represents the binder having a base portion 2 with holes 3 extending therethrough at its upper end, 3 being plates each of which is designed to be secured to the upper surface of the base portion 2, said plates each provided with a perforation 4, preferably smaller than the holes in the base portion, and notches 5. Plates 6 are provided designed to be secured to the under surface of the base portion 2 and each provided with tongues 7 which pass through the base portion 2 and into the notches 5 of the perforated plates 3 and are clamped down against the upper surface of the said plates.
The pivoted member 8 of the binder is made of resilient or spring wire, preferably in one piece, and comprises a middle portion 9 which is pivoted to the upper edge of the base portion 2, by means of a piece of cloth 10 glued thereon or in any other suitable manner, arched portions 11 at each end of the middle portion and each of said arched portions being provided with a rearwardly extending lug 12 designed to pass through the perforations 4; of the plates 3 and be sprung rearwardly under the said plates 3 this action being permitted by reason of the spring action of the pivoted member 8. By having the lugs 12 of the arched portions 11 fastened by engaging the plates 3 below the upper surface of the base portion 2, all obstructions 0r projections are eliminated and in consequence the leaves of the tablet are always allowed to lie perfectly fiat on the base portion at all times. The leaves 13 of the tablet are provided with suitable perforations 1 1 to receive the arched portions 11 of the pivoted member.
To insert the leaves of the tablet in the binder the arched portions 11 of the pivoted spring member 8 are pulled downward until the lugs 12 thereon are released from the plates 3 the pivoted spring member is turned upward and the arched portions 11 inserted in the perforations 14 of the leaves, then the said arched portions are moved downward and passed through the perforations on plates 3* and the lugs 11 sprung under the said plates and the leaves swung over onto the base portion when they are ready for use.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details of construct-ions and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims:
What I claim is:
1. In a binder for tablets, a base portion provided with perforations, perforated plates on the upper surface of the base portion, plates on the under surface of the base portion and having tongues which engage the perforated plates, and a spring member pivoted to the said base portion provided with spring arches having lugs which pass through the perforated plates and engage the same, substantially as described.
2. In a binder for tablets, a base portion, perforated plates on the upper surface of the base portion having notches, plates on the under surface of the base portion having tongues which pass through the notches of the perforated plates and engage said plates, and a member pivoted to the base portion having spring arches provided with rear- Wardly extending lugs which pass through the perforated plates and engage the same, substantially as described.
3. In a binder for tablets, a base portion, perforated plates having notches, plates having tongues which pass through said notches and engage the perforated plates, and a spring member pivoted to the base portion and provided with spring arches having rearwardly extending lugs which pass through the perforated plates and engage the under surface of the same, substantially as described.
4:. In a binder for tablets, a base portion, perforated plates having notches, plates having tongues which pass through said notches and engage the perforated plates, and a spring member pivoted to the base portion and provided with spring arches having rearwardly extending lugs which pass through the perforated plates and engage the under surface of the same below the surface of the base portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
