CALENDAR STAND Filed April 28, 1930 V .2 fi 5 WWI/V701? Patented Dec. 193i UNITED stares 'rHoMAse. GANNOH, or cam o, rnrmorsf CALENDAR sTAN n Application filed April 28,
Thisinvention relates to improvements in calendar stands and more particularly to that type adapted to rest on a desk, writing table or the like and to releasably carry that 55 type of calendar pad comprising a plurality of leaves adapted'to be turned individually in a well known manner to denote the current date.
Formerly all calendar stands in use employed conventional fastening means to adjustably secure their relatively movable parts to their stationary parts, the fastening means employed being rivets, brads, pins or the like. The present stand is entirely devoid of such means, the component parts of the stand cooperating to effectually support each other in assembly thus permitting anyone to readily assemble the stand without the use of tools of any kind or to take it apart or 29 replace any of its parts in like manner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully. described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which forma part of this application for patent and in which-- I Fig. 1 is a top plan vieW of the calenda stand.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1. p
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view, fragmentary, of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the stand in perspective' 7 Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several'views.
In the present instance the stand comprises a table 1 having a downturned marginal flange 2 that serves as a support, the table here shown being oblong in shape and converging upwardly from its ends to its central portion. i
The table is formed with two spaced parallel slots 3, 4 and between the same and substantially equidistant from each withan approximately circular perforation 5 which is connected with said slots by the twin grooves reverse surface of the table being formed with 6, 7 diametrically opposite each other; the
1930. Serial No. 447,986. A p H therelativelywide recesses 8, 9 radiating outi wardly fromthe circular perforation 5, diametrically I opposite each "other and disposed at right angles to the grooves 6, 7 the ooves 8, 9 being, therefore, parallel to the slots 3,4. 55 7 A flat spring 10 spans the circular pcrforation 5 with its-ends resting in the recesses 8, 9 in the under surface of the table, said spring being formed witha transversely extending upwardly bulged-or crimped portion 60 11 adapted, when the spring is in place, to lie in the perforation 5 and to receive the offset portion 12 formed in the rotatable hinge portion 13 of the filing member that retains the leaves comprising the calendar pad (not shown) upon the stand. The hinge 13 lies mainly in the grooves 6, 7 and terminates at each end in an inverted U-shaped integral portion l4vwhich portions in their vertical or operative position rest their free extremities 9 in depressions 15 in the table and with the hinge 13 comprise the filing member.
The hinge 5 comesup against the spring 10 from beneath the same, the offset portion 12 in the hinge engaging with the crimp 11 in the spring, said ofiset hinge portion being disposed at an angle to the U-shaped portions 14 so that when they are vertically positioned it is disposed to one side of a straight line passing longitudinally through the body pori9;
' tion ofthe hinge and connecting both portions 14 and when the said portions 14 are disposed horizontally the offset 12 lies upon the'opposite side of said straight line." 7 The hinge is therefore yieldingly retained $5 in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 wherein the portions 14 are vertically ar: ranged and also in the position shown inFig. 4 wherein the portions 14 of the filing member are horizontally disposed, and. the spring 99. is retained in operative engagement with the table by the filing member, particularly by the hinge portion thereof. The slots 3, 4 in the table provide clearance for the movements of the portions 14 of the filing member. The .5 calendar pad is applied to or removed from the members 14, when they are in horizontal position, in the usual manner.
What is claimed is a In a calendar stand, a table having a downturned marginal edge forming a support, said table being formed with two spaced parallel slots and with a circular perforation therebetween, said perforation and slots being connected by diametrically opposed grooves, said table being formed further with recesses along its under side radiating outwardly from said circular perforation and disposed at right angles to said grooves, a filing member comprising inverted U-shaped portions disposed upon said table and connected by a hinge portion having an ofiset, said hinge being disposed mainly in the grooves of said table with its offset portion spanning said circular perforation, said filing member being swingable from operative to inoperative position, and a flat spring spanning said circular perforation with its ends resting freely in said recesses, said spring being formed with a crimp engaging the offset portion of said vhinge whereby the same is yieldingly retained in adjusted position and operatively secured to said table.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature.
THOMAS Gr. GANNON.
