Description

Nov. 20 1923 J. SCHADE DETACHABLE FILLER FOR MEMORANDUM BOOKS Filed Oct. 16 1922 Edi- nve-ntoz Patented Nov. 20, 1923.
JOHN SCHLADE, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR CEO NATIONAL BLANK BOOK COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY TRUST ASSOCIATION OF COPARTNERSHIP.
DETACHABLE FILLER FOR MEMORANDUM BOCKS' Application filed October 16, 1922. Serial No. 594,676.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Sermon, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Fillers for Memorandum Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven- 0 tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in detachable fillers for memorandum books, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a book of this character which enables the filler to be easily and quickly applied to, and removed from the book and a new filler to be substituted as desired or found necessary.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for removably securing the filler in position which is devoid of any moving or other parts that require manipulation in either the attachment or detachment of the filler.
Still further the invention aims to provide filler securing means which can be easily and quickly secured in operative relation to the book, and which also enables economical production of the book.
The invention has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1, is a side edge elevation of the invention;
Figure 2, is a top plan view of the cover in full or flat open position and with the filler removed, and
Figure 3, is a plan view of the blank from which the attaching clips are formed.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a substantially C-shaped member is employed having a straight long leg or body, and inturned ends or arms 2, 2 each of which lies approximately parallel 50 to the body 1. The ends or arms 2, 2 form attaching means for the body and are secured to the cover 3 of the book at the line of fold of the latter by means of clips 4 each of which latter is curved or channeled or of through said space.
approximately U-cross section. The clips 4 engage the line of fold of the cover and overlie same and are formedon each side with a pair of spurs 5, the latter penetrat-.
ing the cover and being bent or'clinched over and onto the arms 2, 2 from opposite sides of the arms, so as to hold the arms firmly to the cover. The body 1 is thus held spaced from the cover so as to receive the filler F in such space. The filler F is composed of a series of leaves transversely sewed or otherwise connected together centrally of the length thereof and is formed of such thickness so as to permit same to be threaded through the space between body 1 and arms 2 and with the line of connection in register with the body and arms thereof. The clips also afford reinforcements for the back edge or line of fold of the cover and can be economicallyproduced by stamping, as shown in Figure 3.
From the above it will be apparentthat the entire structure involves but three parts namely the filler-holding member and its two securing clips thus affording a simple structure which can be economically produced and assembled. The holding member .may be formed of wire, the structure being devoid of all moving parts. The attaching member holds the filler in place by frictional contact therewith and byvirtue of the inherent tendency of the leaves to curve outwardly.
What is claimed is 1. In a memorandum book, a foldable cover, an attaching member having a body and ends offset therefrom, clips engaged over the back of the cover and having spurs clinched over the body ends to hold the body spaced from the cover, and a filler threaded 2. In a memorandum book, a foldable cover, a filler, a filler-holding member having portions thereof spaced from the cover and having parts engaging the cover, and means engaged with the back of the cover and having parts extending through the cover and engaged with said parts of the filler holding member to secure the latter in position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto JOHN SCHADE.
