5 of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales Book or Pad Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in 10 sales book or pad holding devices, and particularly to an improved clip device for such purpose.

The object of the invention is to produce a very simple device which will be eftective and easy to operate and very economical to produce.

Objects pertaining to details of construction will definitely appear from the description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure constituting an effective and preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing, the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the numbered parts of the drawing, the back board of the cover 1 is of any usual form and a tablet or pad of sales slips 2 is shown in position, as clearly appears in Figs. I and II. The fixed member of the clip 3 is secured by centrally disposed eyelets H to the book back 1, and is notched at each corner at 5, and has pivot extensions 6 and 6 formed integrally therewith, on the lateral extensions thus formed. A fiat central extension 3' is disposed toward the'end of the cover board 1, the object of which will be readily understood from a further explanation. The movable member 7 of the clip extends forwardly and is pro vided with engaging edge 9 provided with teeth 10. A finger hold 11 is struck up at the center for convenience in manipulation. The back edge 8 of the clip is extended down into a straight line and rests upon the extension 8 of the fixed member already referred to. The ends of the clip are formed of folded-in portions 12, which are notched at 13, to receive the pivots 6 at each end, and provided with upwardly-projecting cars 14., as clearly appears in Fig. II. It will be seen from this description that the parts are readily formed from stampings. The fixed member 3 is readily secured to the back by centrally disposed eyelets 4-4, and the movable member of the clip is readily inserted in place by raising up the spring pivots 6 and hooking the ear portions 14 under the same, so that the said pivots can engage in the looped recess 13 on the movable member. It will thus be seen that when the clip member is raised up to open it, the rear edge 8 of the movable member will slide along on the central extension on the fixed member. The notches 5 are of such form that this point of contact, when the clip is open, is at or near the dead center of the pivots 6 and the clip remains open until it is moved toward the closed position. When a pad is inserted in place, it is only necessary to close the book down when the spring will act upon the movable clip member, owing to the fact that the bearing edge 8 has been moved toward the end of the cover'by the movement of the said clip. It will thus be seen that two simple stampings are all that is required for the clip members, and that the same are readily secured to suitable board covers by a pair of eyelets, which is a very simple and secure fastening means. Of course, other means could be provided for securing the clip in place, and for that matter the'clip might very well be used without the cover boards, but of course it will be more or less awkward for use in that way.

In Figs. V and VI, I show the structure in modified forms. In place of the recess or the end portions 12. These ends 12 can be closed onto the pivots 6 at the opposite ends of the fixed member of the clamp. The action will be the same as in the preferred form, only the device cannot be quite so readily assembled and disassembled.

I have described my improved clip device in the most improved form. It is very advantageous to make the parts of a simple stamping. However, a very satisfactory structure could no doubt be made by otherwise forming the various parts and assembling them. The structure could be considerably modified without departing from my invention. I desire to claim the device specifically and broadly, in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A memorandum clip device comprising a flat fixed member provided with lateral extensions having rearward ofiset pivots at their ends, and a movable clip member provided with pivot bearing members at its ends engaged wit-h said pivots and with an in wardly projecting back portion in sliding engagement with said fixed member, the edge of said back portion being adapted to move past the plane of the pivots as the movable member is swung to its open or closed position and to engage the rear edges of the spring members when the said member is swung to its open position.

2. A memorandum clip device consisting as is clearly defined of a flat fixed member lateral extensions oi. which are provided with pivots and constitute spring members, a central part extended beyond the said pivots to form a contact plane, and a movable clip member with pivot bearing members transverse thereto at each end to engage the said pivots, and with a back portion disposed to coact with the central extension of the fixed member, whereby when the clip is open it will remain in the open position and when closed will be acted upon by the said spring members to automatically clamp a pad, coacting for the purpose specified.

' 3. A memorandum clip device comprising a fixed spring plate member provided with lateral extensionshaving pivots thereon, a movable clip member provided with pivot bearing members at its ends and a projecting back portion with its edge in-sliding engagement with said plate, the edge of said back portion being adapted to swing past the plane of the pivots as the movable member is swung to'its open or closed position, said spring members being engaged with said bearing members under tension, and a stop for said movable member in its open position.
