BOOK'I-IOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed May 3, 1907. Serial No. 371,695.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDIE. M. LIMPUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Carlton, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in BooloHolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book holders, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple, convenient, reliable device for holding a book open in position to be read, and to provide means whereby the leaves may be turned and quickly clasped in position to read the various pages.
Another object of my invention is to provide a book holder especially designed for music books in which the clasps for holding the leaves of the book in place are mounted to slide upon a bar, thus providing for books of various widths.
Still another object of the invention is to provide clasps for holding the book, which may be operated to disengage the book when it is required to turn another leaf and can be immediately swung back to engage the book and the new leaf.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which:
Figure l is a rear side elevation of a book holder made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a book hav ing my holder applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a connecting bar, and mounted to slide upon said bar are the two clasp members, each comprising a base plate 2 provided upon their front sides with spaced lugs 3 provided with recesses 3 which engage the cross bar 1 and permit the base plate to slide upon said cross bar in an obvious manner. To the opposite side of the base plate 2 a pair of spaced pintle lugs 4. are provided, and pivoted between these lugs is a rectangular bearing block 5, the pivotal pin 6 extending through apertures in the lugs 4: and properly secured to the block 5. A spring 7 is secured by rivets8 to the base plate 2, said spring extending between the lugs 4: and between the base plate 2 and the bearing block 5, said lugs 1, serving to hold the spring in vertlcal pos1- tion. A wire hook or clasp 9 preferably composed of a single length of wire having the ends thereof secured to the block 5, is provided with spaced arms 10, and an outwardly extending terminal end 11.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: The two clasp members having been adjusted upon the bar 1 at the required distance apart to properly engage the upper margin of the opposite leaves of a book, as shown in Fig. 3, whenever it is required to turn over a new leaf,
the hooks 9 are swung upon their pivotal points 6 to disengage the leaves until the new leaf is turned over, when said clasps are turned back again to engage the book as before. The spring 7 is adapted to engage two plane surfaces on the block 5 to hold the hook in the two necessary positions.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a book holder made in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, can be adjusted to any size book, can be quickly operated to clasp the book and hold it open at any required place, and that the book holder, as a whole, may be manufactured at slight cost, and will be found efiicient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a music book holder an oblong, flat bar, a pair of oblong plates of greater length than the width of the bar and each having on one face a pair of spaced and oppositely extending lugs to slide on the sides and one face of the bar, a pair of spaced pintle lugs formed on the opposite face of each oblong plate, a block pivoted between each pair of pintle lugs and arranged for movement in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal plane of the oblong flat bar, a leaf spring bearing on the inner side of each block and resilient hooks each formed of a single piece of wire bent into a U-shape and having the terminals of their opposite limbs anchored in the upper sides of the blocks, said limbs, at their medial portions being flexed in opposite directions and terminating in downwardly curved bills overhanging said oblong flat bar and serving to clamp the upper ends of the leaves of the book whereby endwise movement of the plates on the bar will be prevented.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDIE M. LIMPUS. Witnesses: LEE F. TETER, J. E. LIMrUs.
