To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAURA L. HARFORI'), a-citizen of the United States, and a resident of Berkeley, county of Alameda, and

State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Book-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a device for holding books, such as copy books and stenographers note books in an open position, so that the matter or notes thereon may be readily read and copied.

An object of the invention is to provide a book holder to which the open book is securely and quickly attachable.

Another object of the invention is to provide a book holder which may be folded and which is simple and cheap in construction.

The invention possesses other advantageous features, which, with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the following description, where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. The novelty of the invention will be included in the claim succeeding said description. From this it will be apparent that I do not limit myself to the showing made by said drawings and description as I may adopt many variations within the scope of my invention, as set forth in said claim.

Referring to said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder of my invention with an open book arranged thereon and attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder of my invention. Fig. 3 is a modified form of the holder. Fig. 1 is a plan of a fragment of the holder.

The holder of my invention is adapted to be used in supporting books, such as copy books and note books, in an open position with the pages disposed at an angle to the horizontal so that the matter thereon may be readily observed and read, and it is par ticularly designed to be used by typewriter operators. The holder comprises a frame of Specification of Letters Patent.

any suitable construction which is adapted to lie on a desk, the frame shown in Figs. 1 and 2 being composed of the longitudinal members or bars 23 and the cross or transverse members or bars 1-5, which are secured to the longitudinal members. Means are provided on the frame for clamping the covers of a book to the frame, so that when in use, the book and frame form a substantially rigid structure. The ends of the longitudinal members 23 are bent upward and backward at their ends producing the inclined lips 6 against which the covers of the book are clamped by the spring clamps 7. The clamps 7 are attached to the members 2-3 and are arranged adjacent the lips 6 and the upper ends of the clamps are preferably curved away from the lips 6 to form V-shaped clamps to permit the ready insertion of the book covers. The leaves of the book are, therefore, free and may be readily turned. Normally, the clamps 7 contact with the lips 6, but when the book covers are inserted, the covers lie between the clamps and the lips. The frame is also provided on its under side with pads 8 of soft material such as felt, so that the frame will not mar the desk on which it is placed.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the frame is composed of the longitudinal members 12-13 which are pivoted together, preferably at the center, so that the holder may be folded to occupy smaller space when not in use. In this construction the lips 6 on the ends of the longitudinal members are inclined in the horizontal plane to the longitudinal members, so that when the members are separated and lie at an angle to each other, the lips at the front and rear are parallel and each pair of lips is alined, that is, the lips 6 areso arranged on the members 1213 that the plane of the lip intersects the plane of the member in a line which makes an angle other than a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the member.
