SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,320, dated February 4, 1902. Application filed August 28, 1901. Serial No. 78,573. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osn LOMBARDERO, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Tu rners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to new and usefulimprovements in music-leaf tumors; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily placed in position upon a music-rack of ordinary construction and which is provided with means whereby the leaves of music are turned one after the other and may be returned to their first positions for repeating. I

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in'the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing'the preferred form of myinvent-ion, and in which- 2 5 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the musicleaf turner in position upon a music-rack. Referring to the figures by numerals of ref- 3 5 erence, 1 is a music-stand the rack 2 of which is'of ordinary construction and provided at its lower edge with a ledge or base 3.

4 is the body of the music-leaf turner and is preferably formed in a single piece of sheet 0 metal bent forward and then backward upon itself, forming recesses or slots 5 and 6, which extend into the body from opposite sides at the top and bottom thereof, respectively. The

upper slot 5 of the body is adapted to receive 5 the base 3 of the music-rack, while-the lower slot or recess "'6 serves as a casing for a pulley 7, which is journaled therein upon a pivotpin 8, extending vertically through the body.

Secured to this pulley and extending laterally therefrom is an arm 9, having a spring- 'ally from the slot 6.

A coiled spring 11 is arranged within the slot 6 and is secured at opposite ends to the arm 9 and the rear of body 4. This spring serves to hold arm 9 normally in the position shown in the drawings.

Extending over the pulley 7 and pivoted upon the pin 8 is a plate 12, formed at the inner end of a second arm 13, extending later- This arm, as well as arm 9 before referred to, is bent back at its free end, forming a stop let for strips 15, which are pivoted to the arm and extend upward therefrom, forming holders for the music-sheets.

A cord 16 is secured to the inner end of arm 6 9 and extends around the outer face of pulley 7 and out through an aperture 17, formed in the center of the rear of slot 6. The opposite end of the cord is provided with a series of knots 18, any one of which is adapted to engage the reduced end of a slot 19, formed within one end of a treadle 20. v

Projecting upward from the top of the body 4, at the center of the rear thereof,is a threaded stud 21, adapted'to engage the lower end 7 5 of a tube 22. Annular flanges 23 are formed upon this tube and pivotally mounted therebetween is the cylindrical end 24 of one member 25 of a clip. The second member 26 is hinged to the cylinder 24. and is provided atits upper and lower edges with laterally-extending ears 27, which are adapted to engage the edges of member 25 when the two parts are pressed together and lock them in such position. A recess 28 is formed within the in- 8 5 ner face of member 25 to receive a corresponding projection upon the adjacent face of the member 26, thereby serving to prevent a sheet of music from slipping from between the clip members. A rod 29 is adjustably secured 0 within the upper end of the tube 22,and a clip 3O, similar to the one upon tube 22,is mounted at the upper end thereof. Where there is but one sheet of music to be turned, the rod 29 is adjusted upward, so that the clips 25, 26, 5 and 30 can grip the rear edge thereof near the top and bottom. The outer edge of the sheet is then placed between the strips 15 of arm 9. When it is desired to turn the sheet,

it is merely necessary to depress the treadle Ioo 20. This will pull cord 16 downward and will turn pulley 7 and arm 9 upon the pivot-pin 8. The treadle is held depressed until the second page of the sheet has been read, when it is released and the spring 11 immediately returns the parts to normal position. When it is desired to use a double sheet of music, the same is placed back of the tube 22 and the opposite edges thereof are placed into the holders 15 of the arms 9 and 13, respectively. Arm 13 is then folded back until it touches the clip 10. When the pulley 7 is turned in the manner hereinbefore described,the arm 9 will swing around, pushing arm 13 in front of it. d

When this arm 13 reaches the limit of its movement, the cord 16 is released and spring 11 promptly returns arm 9 to its firstposition. After the two innerpages of music have been read the arm 9 is again swung around, thereby exposing the last page of music. If it is desired to repeat, arm 9 is pr ssed tightly against arm 13 until the clip 10 engages the same. When the cord 16 is released, spring 11 will return both arms to the right-hand side of the rack.

In Fig. 1 I have shown a double and a single sheet or five pages of music in position in the device. In this case the single sheet is placed in clips 25, 26, and 30 and holder 15 of arm 9, as first described. The double sheet is placed on the rack in rear of tube 22 and arm 9 and is engaged by holder 15 of arm 13. The device is then operated as hereinbefore described.

It will be seen that the device is extremely simple in construction, easily operated, and can be quickly placed in position upon a rack of ordinary construction. The cord 16 after passing out through the aperture 17 in the holder extends down direct to the treadle,

which is preferably arranged under the legs of the stand.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifieations may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.-

Having thus fully described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a body having a recess therein; of a pin extending through the recess, a pulley journaled thereon, an arm secured to the pulley and extending laterally therefrom and from the recess, a plate loosely mounted above the pulley and on the pin, an arm extending laterally from the plate and projecting from the recess,a clip upon the arm of the pulley adapted to engage the arm of the plate, a rod extending from the body, and means upon said rod and the free ends of the arms, for engaging the edges of sheets of music.

2. The combination with a body having a recess therein; of a pulley journaled within the recess, an arm extending laterally therefrom, a second arm loosely pivoted within the recess, a clip upon the arm of the pulley adapted to engage the second arm when pressed thereagainst, a flexible strip upon the pulley adapted to revolve the same, and a holder at the free end of each arm, adapted to engage the edge of a sheet of music.

3. The combination with a body having recesses in opposite sides thereof; of a pulley journaled within one of the recesses, an arm extending laterally therefrom, a second arm loosely pivoted within the recess and extending laterally therefrom, a clip upon the arm of the pulley adapted to engage the second arm when pressed thereagainst, a flexible strip extending partly around the pulley and from the body, a treadle adjustably secured to the strip, an adjustable rod secured to the body, a clip thereto and revolubly mounted thereon, and pivoted holder-strips at the free end of each arm, said strips and clips being adapted to grip the edges of a sheet of music.

4. The combination with a body having a recess therein; of a pulley journaled within the recess, an arm extending laterally from the recess and pulley, a second arm loosely pivoted within the recess, a spring secured at opposite ends to the arm of the pulley and to the body, a clip upon the arm of the pulley adapted to engage the second arm when pressed thereagainst, a cord mounted upon the pulley,whereby the same may be revolved, a treadle secured to the cord, and holders upon the arms for elasping the edges of a sheet of music.

5. The combination with a music-rack, of a body having recesses extending thereinto from opposite sides, one of said recesses being adapted to receive the base of the rack, a pulley journaled within the remaining recess, an arm extending therefrom, a second arm loosely mounted within said recess, a spring secured at opposite ends to the arm of the pulley and to the rear of its recess, a cord mounted on the pulley and extending from the body, a treadle adjustably secured to the cord, a clip upon the arm of the pulley adapted to engage the second arm when pressed thereagainst,a rod upon the body,a clip thereon, holders upon the free ends of the arms, said clip and holders being adapted to engage the edges of a sheet of music.
