UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VALTER L. GAYXVOOD, OF HUME, MISSOURI.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,991, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed November 29, 1898. $erial No. 697,789. (No model.)
To (all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER L. CAYWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hume, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to musicleaf turners.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will quickly turn the sheets of music sheet by sheet by the depression of a lever and which when all the sheets have been turned will restore the sheets to their original position to permit of a repetition of the music.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of myimproved sheet-music turner, showing the spring-arms turned to the right and in position for engaging the sheets of music. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on the line X X of Fig.1, looking in the direction of the arrow.- Fig. 4.- is a detail per spective view of the inner end of one of the spring-arms removed; and Fig. 5 is an end View of the leaf-turning arms, showing the arrangements of their outer ends.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the base, which is preferably made of wood and which is adapted to be secured to a piano or organ by the clamp 2, which may be of any well-known or approved construction and which has an adjustable engagement with the base by a slot connection, so as to adapt the holder to diiferout forms of pianos or organs.
3 denotes the sheet-music holder, which consists of two clamping -jaws semicircular in Secured above the upper end stair step order or indifferent horizontal planes. The tension of the springs is ex" erted to swing these arms from right to left. 13 denotes a lock-bar connected to said base by staples 14 and having an offset end 15, that projects through an aperture 16 in the lower end of the casting and immediately in front of the inner ends of the arms when they are swung in the position shown in Fig. 1.
. It is understood that the free ends of the spring-arms are adapted to engage the sheets of music, and the object is to turn one sheet at a time. To accomplish this, I provide means by which the upper end of the lockrod may be lowered a distance corresponding to the width of each transverse guideway, so that the spring-arms may be, beginning with the upper one, successively released to throw the sheet of music from one side to the other when desired. To do this, I provide the lower end of the rod with the rack-bar 17 the teeth of which correspond in number with the spring-arms. To depress this rod tooth by tooth, no more and no less, I provide the lever 18, which is pivoted to the base or support, and provide a stop 19 for said lever, which limits its downward movement as well as its upward movement. This stop may be in the form of a staple, as shown in the drawings. The lever after each depression is elevated to its limit by a coil-spring 20. 21 de notes a device for swinging the spring-arms back to their normal position if it be desired to repeat the piece of music. This device preferably consists of a rod journaled in bean ings 22 to the edge of the base or support and having a crank-arm 23, which is adapted to be swung into engagement with the spring arms, and by rotating this rod the spring arms will be swung from left to right, or to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1.
24; denotes two angular spring-arms, the inner ends of which are pivoted to the back of the wooden base. The upwardly-extending ends of said arms are adapted to lie flat against the sheets of music that are not desired to be used, so thatin shifting the sheets that are in use the suction will not draw over the sheets that are not desired to be used.
In operation by depressing the lever to its lowest limit of movement, which is the distance of but one tooth, on the rack-bar the upper spring-arm will be released and will swing the sheet of music with which it is engaged from right to left. The lever when released will be elevated byits coil-spring and will engage the tooth immediately above that just acted upon. A second depression of the lever will release a second spring-arm, and this operation continues until all the sheets have been turned. it it is desired to repeat the piece of music, the spring-ari'n-returning device is operated, which will throw the spring-arms over to the right-hand side. The lock-rod is then elevated in front of the springarms and will hold them in their return position until they are disengaged by the operation of the lever.
llavin g thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a music-leaf turner, the combination with the base or support, of spring-actuated leaf-turning arms, means for releasing said arms, and. a music-clamp consisting of two jaws semicircular in cross-section, hinged together, one section being provided with a screw-threaded aperture and the other with a horizontal elongated aperture, and a setscrew extending through the horizontal elongated aperture and engaging the walls of the screw-threaded aperture, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
