CHARLES ELIVLER FLANDEBS, OF WEST BROOKFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK MARK AND SUPPORT.
9&35655.
To all Iiti/tom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Cin-xmlns E. FLAN- sans, a citizen of the United States, residing at fest Brookfield, in the county of ,-rcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Marks and Supports; and I do let-lare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itl appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to combined bookmark and supports.
rIhe object of the invention is the provision of means holding the pages of a book open and for supporting the book in proper reading or writing position with the rear thereof sightly elevated so that the person using the book may assume a comfortable position and have the book in proper position in the line of vision.
A further object of the invention is the provision of suitable means for supporting a book and for maintaining a given place and further to provide such a device which will be adjustable for dill'erent size books.
ik further object of the inventionis to provide a simple and inexpensive bookmark and support which may be readily attached and detached and which may be sold at a comparatively small cost.
YVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement oi' parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the device applied to a book; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the device removed from a book and collapsed and showing in dotted lines the device slightly extended for a larger size book; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line B-S of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of clip; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a still further modified form of clip.

Referring more especially to the drawings, l and Q, represent the separate sections of the combined support and leaf holder which are each composed of a single sheet of material, preferably of some material having sullicient resiliency to engage the book and hold it in place thereon. lach section has a longitudinal arm, 3, at the end of which there is secured a clip, 1l, which overlaps the adjacent arm of the co-acting member and holds the parts together whereby they may be adjusted one upon the other for use upon di'll'erent size books. llhese clips as shown, are soldered to their respective members as shown in Fig. 3 but may be integral therewith as shown in Figs. 4t and 5.
Each member, 3, is provided at the end opposite from that to which the clip is attached with a depending leg, 5, which is bent back upon itself to form the connecting portion, G, of the spring arms, 7. These arms extend toward each other and have their forward ends elevated as at S, so as to provide for a grip or operating handle, and to permit the device to be readily placed upon or removed from the book.
In Fig. Ll, the arms, 3, are provided at their ends with outstanding ears, 9, which are adapted to be bent over the coacting arm in order to secure the sections in adjustable position. In Fig. 5, the ends of the arms are cut away at 10, to form longitudinally extending ears, 11, which in application are i bent at right angles and then up over the co-acting arm.
Many other modifications of the clip are contemplated by me and I further wish it understood that the device may be readily made of wire with the loop ends raised as at 8, in Fig. l, and their free ends bent over into the retaining clips.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the. minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriicing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
A device of the class described, comprising a pair of sections, arms on each section, clips on said arms adapted to take over the co-acting arm, depending legs formed on said sections, and spring leaf clamps forming a continuation of said legs and lying over 1G said arms.
In testimony whereof l' have hereunto set my hand in presence of t-Wo subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES ELMER FLANDERS.
Witnesses BEN K. GALLUP, Sanna M. EATON.
