Be it known that I, GEORGEW. HOAGLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Holders for Oopy-Slips and other Articles, of which the Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-letters indicate the same or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book, showing the preferred form of my device as applied to childrens copy-books. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of a portion of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows at the top and bottom of said figure. Fig. 4 is a detail of one form of copy-slip or blotter-engaging device that may be employed in connection with the other parts of my invention, showing the position the parts thereof assume when engaged with said slip or blotter and the bar a. Fig. 5 illustrates the position the parts of the engaging device assume when not engaging the slip or blotter 0. Figs. 6 and 7 are fragmentary views illustrating twomeans by which the copy-slip 0 may be adjustably and removably attached to the rod or without employing the rod and copy-slip-engaging device 13 shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view illustrating one manner in which several copy-slips or blotters may be simultaneously and adjustably and removably fastened upon the rod a.

To obviate the necessity of repetition throughout the description and claim, it will be understood that the words copy slip or slips where used will signify said slip or slips, a blotter or blotters, or both slips and blotters; that the word book shall signify a book, blotting-pad, paper-block, or other similar article, and that wherever several terms are employed to signify the same or equivalent things any of said terms thereafter used singly shall be understood'to include the other terms and their equivalents.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, attractive, and serviceable device that may be readily attached to or removed from a book, provided with adjustable means whereby a copy-slip may be removably secured and readily moved from place to place upon the underlying surface; and to that end it consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter to be more particularly described,and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved copy-slip-hoiding device which is so constructed that it is adapted to be attached to books, sheets of paper, &c., and

which will enable the user to adjust the slip held thereby to any desired point upon the page or sheet and by means of which the slip can be detached from the device for the purployed, consisting, preferably, of a wire bent to form the arms a a, the arm a, being bent at its free end to form the hook a which hook is adapted to engage the free end of the arm a, all the parts described operating in the well-known manner of a safety-pin.

B is a copy-slip-engaging device, preferably 'formed by bending a piece of sheet metal in such manner that one end will be adapted to engage the arm a, and the free ends form spring-jaws b b.

C is a copy-slip having upon it or attached to it letters, characters, words, or numerals to be used as a copy by the student in copying into the copybook D.

The operation of this form of my device is as follows: The spring-arm a may be pressed toward the engaging arm afand released from the loop 0. The device may then be slipped onto a book, as shown in Fig. 1, and the arm at pressed into engagement with the loop a thus securing the book or'portion thereof between the two arms a, ct. Assuming the parts of the copy-slip -engaging device B to be in the open position shown in Fig.

and the copy-slip 0 inserted between the jaws b b, as therein shown, by pressing the lever 17 backwardly and downwardly toward the arm a the cam-operating end b of the lever presses down upon the spring-jaw 19, causing said jaw to approach the jaw b,.the two jaws gripping the copy-slip C, the parts described copy-slip shall be from the point at which he' is endeavoring to make a facsimileof the characters thereon, thus doing away with the necessity of printed or engraved copies at the tops of the sheets within copy-books and the objectionable features hereinbefore set forth, which are common to all such books now known to the art.

A second use to which my device may be put is as an adjustable blotter-holder for bookkeepers or others use. In case of such use, in place of the copy-slip a blotter would mpl y dlt is obvious that instead of the safety-pin form of book-engaging device any suitable means may be employed to retain the arm a in the proper position upon the underlying surface and that any suitable gripping device may be substituted for the jaws and lever; that the gripping device may be omitted and the copy-slip be provided with means attached thereto or forming a part thereof for adjustably and removably engaging the rod a,'(se'e Figs. 6 and 7;) that the copy-slip, blotter, or

other article may be of any size; that as many 1 copy-slips may be employed as desired; that when anumber of copy-slips are employed the same may be used singly or fastened together in the. manner of a book in such numher as desired, (see Fig..8;) that'the characters on said slips to be copied may be attached to said slips or printed directly thereon,either on one or both sides thereof, or that a blotter may be attached to one side of the slip, or that the slip may in itself be a blotter, or that said slip and a blotter may be separately or simultaneously used; that the device as a whole and the article to which it may be attached may be of any suitable size; that the number, size, and form of the parts of the device may be greatly varied without departing from the principle of the invention, and it is further obvious that the uses to which my device may be put are not limited to those described,

-Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' V An adjustable copy-slip holder comprising astraight rigid rod provided with means for detachably clamping it to a book, a slidable slip-holder having at its inner end an elongated socket receiving and fitting closely said straight rigid rod, whereby the holder is held firm in its movements, in respect to the book when moved upon said rod, and provided at its outer end with a movable slip-clamp constructed to firmly and detachably hold a copyslip, whereby the copy-slip when adjusted in alinement will remain so'w-hen the holder is. moved upon the said rigid rod for adjusting the slip in respect to the book, substantially as d scribed.
