CHARLES 0. PRICE, OF BOONE GROVE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF '10 ETTA FORREST, OF ANDOVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
' COPY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed May 22, 1907- Serial No. 374,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES 0. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone Grove, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to copy holders for use by operators on typewriting machines, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which the lines of notes, writing or other material to be copied may be successfully designated and any particular word in a line conveniently indicated.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved copy holder; Fig. 2 a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 a plan view of a clamp device which I employ; and, Fig. 4 a plan view of the complete device as shown in Fig. 1. 1
In the practice of my invention, I provide a baseor support a having an upright tubular standard a in which is mounted a vertically movable member a and the parts a and a form a complete standard the height of which may be adjusted by sliding the part a in the part a and securing the same at any desired point by means of a set screw a".
The copy holder proper is shown at b and comprises a back plate or board a which is pivoted to the top of the standard member a at a so as to swing in a vertical plane and the plate or board 0 is provided at or near its opposite sides with two raised rods or bars d between which is mounted a transversely ranging line indicator e. The line indicator e consists of a sheet or plate of any desired material, the top edge portion of which is connected with slides f mounted on the rods or bars 01 and free to slide thereon, and connected with one of the slides f as shown in Fig. 4 and on an enlarged scale in Fig. 3 is a clamp device g to hold the line indicator 6 at any desired point on the rods or bars d and by the manipulation of which the said line indicator may be moved up and down on said rods or bars so as to indicate any line of the material or subject matter to be copied.
The clamp device 9 consists of two curved handle members g having shanks g pivoted together and to the slide f at 9 and the shanks g are provided with arms 9 preferably provided with cushion heads g and placed between the handle members g is a spring g which is secured to one of said handle members and bears on the other and the operation of which is to force the cushion heads 9 in contact with the corresponding rod or bar d and hold the line indicator e at any desired point on the rods or bars (1, and by pressing the handle members 9 together, the cushion heads g will be released from the corresponding rod or bar d and the line indicator may be moved to any desired point by means of the handle members 9 of the clamp device.
The line indicator 0 is provided near its upper edge with a longitudinal slot 0 in which is mounted a slide h provided with a pivoted pointer t' which serves as a word indicator.
In the form of construction shown, the upper ends of the rods or bars 01 are curved backwardly and downwardly as shown at d and connected with the plate or board 0 at d but this method of connecting the rods or bars (1 ,with the plate or board 0 is not material and the said rods or bars may be connected with the upper end portion of the plate or board 0, if desired. In the form of construction shown, I also provide an elastic band j which is passed around the upper end portion of the plate or board 0 and is designed to hold the copy or manuscript on the said plate or board, but any other suitable means may be provided for this purpose.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
The device is placed on a table adjacent to the typewriter and the material to be copied is placed on the plate or board 0 and is held thereon by the band 9' or any other suitable device, and as the copying of the said material proceeds, the line indicator e is moved downwardlyon the rods or bars d so as to indicate the line to be copied, and the pointer i may be manipulated at any time to indicate any particular word of said line.
It will be understood that the line indicator e may be moved in either direction for the purpose specified, and any particular form of pointer 41 may be employed, and any suitable device may be substituted for the slide h, all that is necessary, in this connection, being to provide a pointer which is movable longitudinally of the line indicator 6 which may be used in the manner described.
It will be understood, of course, that the plate or board a constitutes the back of the holder on which the material to be copied is placed and said back member may be composed of any desired material and the holder may be connected with the standard or support in any preferred way.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A copy holder, comprising aback member, parallel raised supports connected with the opposite side portions thereof, a transversely arranged line indicator provided with slides mounted on said supports, means for adjusting the line indicator and slides on said supports, a slide mounted on the line indicator and adjustable transversely of the back member, and a pointer pivoted to said slide and adapted to swing in a plane parallel with the line indicator.
2. A copy holder, comprising a back member, parallel raised supports connected with the opposite side portions thereof, slides mounted on said supports, a transverse line indicator connected with said slides a clamp device connected with one of said slides and operating in connection with the support on which said slide is mounted to hold the line indicator in any desired position, said clamp device comprising spring operated jaws having handles by means of which the said clamp device may be operated and the line indicator adjusted 011 said supports, a slide mounted on the line indicator and adjustable transversely of the back member, and a pointer pivoted to said slide.
In testimony that I claim the foregoim, as my invention I have signed my nalne in presence of the subscribim, witnesses this 17th day of May 1907.
