To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO KRENGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in printing devices, and more particularly in that class of such devices'which are especially designed and adapted for use by merchants and others for printing show cards, signs and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and of a compact, strong and durable construction having novel and improved means for holding movable types in position for printing, whereby the device is made capable of convenient employment and efficient results are attained without requiring any particular skill or knowledge of the art of printing on the part of the operator.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved printing device, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, cheaper and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which serve to illustrate my invention-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a printing device embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken lengthwise through the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken transversely through the device in the plane indicated by line a-a in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, but taken through the device in the plane indicated by line J-) in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing one of the movable type blocks detached; Fig. 6 is a view somewhat similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified form of the improved printing device; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the device constructed as shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a perspective view similar to Figs. 1 and 6 but showing still another modified form of the device; Fig. 9 is vva view similar to Fig. 8, but showing the type holding means in raised adjustment, and Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the device as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
In these views I have shown the improved printing device attached to a platen flat work rest or table 1, which may be Iany description of flattened supporting surface whereon the cards or sheets to be printed are adapted to be supported as shown at The improved printing device will be preferably constructed separately from said work rest or table 1, so that the purchaser may apply the device in any situation which may be most expedient. A gage device of any preferred kind may be mounted upon the rest or table.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, the device comprises a frame 2 in the form of a fiat metal plate held by screws 3 or the like to one edge of the work rest 1, and having an angular extension 4 arranged to overhang the lateral part of said work rest and to lie fiush against the upper surface thereof in such a way as to facilitate the attachment of the device in proper position upon said work rest or table 1.
5 represents a swinging plate or frame member having hinge connection as seen at 6 with the upper edge of the frame 2, the axis of said hinge connection being extended parallel with the top surface of the work rest so as to permit the type holding devices carried by said member 5 to be lowered and raised intoand out of contact with the card or sheet rested upon the work table 1 during the operation of printing. f
7, 7 represent parallel guide strips or bars spaced apart fromV each other and secured, as shown at 8 to the swinging member 5 in posit-ion to extend out horizontally across and parallel with the top surface of the rest or table 1 when the said member 5 is extended vertically above said table as shown in the drawings, but adapted to be raised atan angle to said table 1 when member 5 is rocked upon its hinge connection at 6 with the frame plate 2.
9, 9 represent notches produced in an up turned edge portion or flange 10 of the frame extension 4 and when in lowered or printing position, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the guide strips or bars 7, 7 are adapted to be engaged in said notches 9, 9 in such a way as to be braced against lateral movement. The bottoms of said notches 9, 9, also cepting that in lieu of the actuating bar or member being passed through an opening in frame member 5 as in the preceding construction, said bar or member is provided with a finger 19a pendent below its pivotal connection with member 5, a spring 21a being interposed between said finger and member 5 in order to permit slight relative movement of the parts, so that the bar or member 20 may be raised out of contact with the type blocks in assembling the device for use.
The construction shown in Figs. 8, 9 and l0 is also very similar to that above described excepting that the actuating bar or member 20 has pivotal connection as seen at 25 with the frame 2 independently of the frame member 5, a spring connection being provided, as seen at 26, for compelling movement of the member 5 in unison with said bar while permitting the bar to be vindependently moved to an extent sufficient to allow its cushion to be raised from contact with the type blocks.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved printing device constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and-accuracy with which the cards or sheets may be printed without requiring any particular skill or experience on the part of the operator and it will also be obvious from the above description that the device is capable of some modification without material departure from the spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is zl. A device of the character described comprising a type-retaining device, a part adapted for attachment to a work-rest and having hinge connection with the type-retaining device for pivotally supporting it for movement toward and from the workrest, and a member movable toward and from said type-retaining device and adapted to press the same toward such work-rest, said type-retaining device comprising spaced parts between which a series of types are adapted to be adjustably held and an adjustable member extended in the space between said parts and adapted for engagement with said type to hold them against movement.

A device of the character described comprising an elo-ngated member having means for pivotally supporting it for movement toward and from a work-rest, and a type-retaining device extended lengthwise of and beneath said member and connected for movement in unison therewith and adapted to detachably hold a series of types the upper parts of which are arranged for contact with said elongated member and the printing faces of which are alined with each other in the direction of the length of said elongated member.

A device of the character described comprising an elongated member, a part adapted for attachment to a work-rest and with which said elongated member has hinge connection to permit it to be moved toward and from said work-rest, and a type retaining device extended lengthwise along said member and connected for movement in unison therewith relatively to the work-rest to permit the printing surfaces of the types carried by it to be inked and adapted to detachably hold a series of types the upper parts of which are arranged for cont-act with said elongated member.

A device of the character described comprising a series of types having registering apertures, a type-retaining device comprising a part detachably engaged in the registering apertures of said series of types to hold said types in printing position, a part adapted for attachment to a work-rest and with which the type-retaining device has hinged connection for movement toward and from a work-rest to permit the types carried by the type-retaining device to be inked, and an actuating member movable toward and from the type-retaining device, and adapted to press the same toward said work-rest.

A device of the character described comprising an elongated actuating member having means for pivotally supporting it for movement toward and from a work-rest, and a type-retaining device connected for movement in unison with said actuating member and comprising parallel resilient strips eX- tended lengthwise along the actuating member and spaced apart to receive a series of types between them.
6. A device of the character described comprising a work-rest, a pivotally supported type-retaining device capable of movement away from the work-rest to permit types carried thereby to be inked, and capable of movement toward such work-rest to permit the inked types to be impressed upon work laid upon said work-rest, a member movable toward and from said typeretaining device and adapted to press the same toward the work-rest, and interchangeable printing types having independent engaging means for holding them alined with each other upon said type-retaining device.
