ATTACHMENT FOR PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
288,404, dated November 18, 1883.
, Applicationfiled January 15, 1883. (Model) To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. BROOKE, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Philahas been printed and removed another sheet is exposed to be printed without having first to adjust it in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1,
Sheet 1, is a perspective view of an ordinary manifold printing-press provided with my attachment; Fig. 2,a plan view of the attachment drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 3, $heet 2, is a section on the line 1 2, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 3 4, Fig. 2.
The press A may be of any ordinary construction. In the drawings I have illustrated a form in which the platen a is adapted to be depressed by a cam-lever, b, and raised by a spring. l a
B is the sliding bed, adaptedto guides b on the bed-plate of the press, so that it. can be in platen, or withdrawn thereserted under the from.
On the center of the sliding bed B is laid the printing-surfaced, which is helddown at its edges ey s. open rectangular frame, D,
hinged to the bed B at 7c, the printing-surface be'ng backedup, so that it willbe some distance above the level of the frame.
A plate, E, is hinged to the bed B at the edge of the plate D, opposite the hinge 7c, and is preferably provided with a detachable hingepin. Tothe face of this plate E are se; cured two guide-flanges, e e, at right angles to each other, one or both of these flanges beingprovided with slotted lugs a to permit of their adjustment on the face of the plate to suit the size of the sheets to be printed. The flange e is provided with a projecting lip, e
' to assist in retaining the sheetsof paper placed against the flanges.
To the face of the plate E, on the side opposite the flange e, is secured an elastic retaining-c]ip, t, the remaining edges of the sheets of paper being held by spring-clips, which, as shownin Figs. 2 and 4, are composed of springs g 9, provided at their outer ends with strips f f. Cross-bars h are secured 'to the springs 9, whereby the clips may be raised to free the sheets of paper, or for the insertion of fresh sheets, and immediately be low each of the cross-bars is an ope'ning,.m, for the introduction of thefinger or thumb of the operator, in order to raise the clips.
When the printing-surface has been put in place and clamped down by the frame D, a number of sheets of paper. are placed in position on the plate E and held down by the clips, as shown in Figs; 3 and 4. The plate, with the sheets of paper clamped thereto, is then turned down on its hinge onto the printing-surface and the sliding bed B pushed on its guides underneath the platen, which is then forced down bythe cam-lever b, so as to press the paper into close contact with the printing-surface, thereby producing the de sired impression. Thepressure on the platen is then relieved, the sliding bed withdrawn, the plate E raised, as shown in Fig. 1, and
the uppermost sheet of paper carrying the impression removed, the operation being repeated until all the sheets in the pile have been printed. A new supply of sheets can then be inserted and the printing continued, as before.
" I claim as my-invention- 1. The combination of a press, A, and sliding bed B, carrying a printing-surface, with a plate, E, hinged to the said bed, and carrying clips, substantially as described, for retaining a number of sheetsof paper to be printed.
2. The combination of the bed carrying a per-retaining clips composed of springs 9,
strips f, and cross-bars 72 as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specifieationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses. FRANCIS M. BROOKE:
