The roller 28 may be of wood, steel or fibre or any other suitable material. Journalled in suitable apertures 29 in the side frame members 22 above the lower idle roller 28 is a driving roller 30. This driving roller 30 is provided with reduced portions 3| on the opposite ends thereof so as to provide clearance for the side frame members of a chase presently to be described. The outer ends of this roller 35 are further reduced, as shown at 32, so as to form the bearing portions and are seated within the apertures 29 of the side plates 22.
Secured to one end of the roller 38 outside one invention is the provision of a novel printing j device in which no type bed is used, but in substitution thereof a novel form of removable type chase together with novel pivoted guide frames for guiding the type chase through the device, is provided. These guide frames, generally indicated by the reference character 35, are pivoted on the opposite sides of the side plate members 22 and are preferably on the inner side thereof, by means of bolts 35. Each of these guide frames comprises two longitudinal guide frame members 31 which are held apart in spaced relation with respect to each other by means of spacer bars 38. These guide frame members 31 are provided with inwardly extending ribs or shoulders 40 which form the ledge or guide over which the type chase is guided longitudinally thereof. Pivoted to the outer free ends or corners of each of the guide frames are legs 39 which are pivoted by means of bolts 4l to the guide frames. Each of these legs has a flattened or sharpened corner, as shown on one edge thereof, by the reference character 42, which is adapted to engage the lower edge of the ribs 40 for locking the legs 39 in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this position the legs 39 support these guide frames in operative position, or in horizontal alignment with respect to each other, and with the upper edge of the ribs 48 tangent to and in alignment with the upper surface of the lower roller 28.
Another important and novel feature of the present invention consists of a simple, efficient and removable type frame or chase which is adapted to be moved longitudinally on the guide frames and is actuated by friction between the rollers 28 and 35 by the operation of the crank handle 34 in the manner hereinafter described. The type frame or chase is generally indicated by the reference character 43, and comprises a metal bottom 44 which is adapted to slide or ride on the upper edges of the ,projecting ribs 48 of each of the guide frame members 31. The opposite ends of this bottom plate 44 are turned upwardly at right angles with respect to the flat bottom portion, as shown at 45. Frictionally mounted between these vertically extending ends is an internal metal type frame or chase, generally indicated by the reference character 46, which comprises in turn, a metal bottom 41 and vertically and longitudinally extending side frame members 48 which are arranged at right angle with respect to the bottom. The, internal type frame or pan is provided with vertically extending end walls, as shown at 49, which'are arranged at right angles with the bottom 41, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Positioned between the bottom 41 of the internal type frame and the bottom 44 of the external type frame is a flat pad 58 which may be of rubber, felt or cardboard. The purpose of this pad is to yieldingly support the internal type frame within the external type frame, and to permit additional cardboards or additional pads to be inserted between the bottom of each of these frames to take care ofvarylg thicknesses of the cards being printed, 1n the :manner hereinafter described. Located in transverse registering alignment in each of the opposite walls 48- of the internal type frame 45 are vertical slots 5|, in which is mounted a transverse pin or shaft1 52. Journalled on the shaft 52 by means of hinges 5 3 is a yielding card supporting frame, generally indicated by the reference character 54, which comprises 'two longitudinally extending side members 55, lwhich have their opposite ends secured to two transverse bars or frame members 56.' Mounted for longitudinal adjustmenton eachof these side frame members are clasps or hooks, preferably made of fiat steel, as shown at 51, which in turn are connected together by means of relatively small coil springs 58. These clips may be adjusted longitudinally of each of the bars 55 so that the springs 58 thereof may be positioned between the type, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. When type of diiferent sizes is used the springs are adjusted to occupy a `position between the lines `of type, This yielding cardsupporting frame is mounted on compression springs 59 which are located in the forward corners of the type frame, and have their lower ends preferably mounted on and secured to grooved studs 60 which are complementary to the internal portion of the spring. These studs are secured to the opposite ends of an angle member Sl which in turn is secured to the bottom 41 of the internal type frame 46. The other end of the yielding card supporting frame is similarly supported on two springs 52 located in the opposite corners of the rear part of the frame, and have their lower ends secured to grooved studs 63 which in turn are secured to the opposite ends of an angle member 64. The angle member 64 is secured to the bottom 41 of the type frame 46, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The upper part of each of these rear springs 62 contact with and support the hinge portions 53 of each of the longitudinally extending frame members 55 of the card supporting frame 54. Also pivoted on the shaft or pin 52 is a steel pressure plate 65, which is connected thereto by means of a curled end of hinge 66 (Fig. 7) surrounding the shaft 52. Also pivoted on the shaft 52, between the hinges 53 and the central hinge 66, by means of hinges 61 is a friction plate 58. The friction plate B8 and pressure plate 55 are preferably welded or secured together, so as to form in effect, a single plate, and are adapted to be moved about the shaft as a single member. Located between the pressure plate and the card supporting frame 54 is a card 69 which is shown in fragmentary form in Fig. 3 of the drawings, preparatory to being imprinted. Secured to the ends of the type frame or chase 4S against each of the angle members 6l and 54 byv means of wood screws 10 which extend through the bottom 41 of the frame, are wooden blocks or end frame members 1l. Located on the opposite sides and contacting the side walls 48 of the type or chase frame 46 are two longitudinally extending wooden frame members 12. These longitudinal side frame members 12 are secured to the bottom of the type chase 46 by means of screws which extend through the bottom 41 thereof. The type is set, as shown at 13, between the longitudinal side frame members 12, and is secured in position by suitable spacers, as shown at 14, and clamped therein by any suitable means well known. in the art.
The operation of my improved printing device is as follows:
Let us assume that the guide frame members 31 are opened up horizontally from the folded position., shown in Fig. l0, to its operation position, shown in Fig. 2, in which case the pivoted legs 39 are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2 for supporting the pivoted guide frames in horizontal position. Let us assume also that the pressure plate 65, friction plate B8 and the card supporting frame 54 are swung upwardly so as to assume the dotted line position shown in Fig. 12, with all of these parts leaning against the upper roller 30. At this point the ink roller may be run across the type for the purpose of placing ink thereon, 'after which the card supporting frame 54 is lowered to the position shown in Fig.

this point the pressure and friction plates 65 and 68- respectively are lowered against the card to the position shown in Fig. 13, and the chase as a whole is moved by one hand of the operator in the direction toward and between the rollers on the inwardly projecting ribs 40 of one of the guide frames 31. At the same time the crank handle 34 isrevolved so as to frictionally engage the friction plate by the upper roller 3D, and upon a further actuation of the crank the type chase is moved longitudinally of the frame and the friction plate 68, pressure plate 65 and card supporting frame 54 are depressed under the yielding resistance offered by the springs 59 and GZ, to a point where the type makes an imprint on the inserted card. In this connection it will be noted that as the roller initially engages or compresses the yielding frame of the type chase only the forward portion of the yielding frame comprising the parts 55, 5E and 68 permits that portion of the card to be depressed against the type, holding the rear end of the yielding frame, as well as the other portions thereof, together with the card being printed, away from the type. In other words there is sulcient flexibility in the yielding frame so as to permit the printing to occur only at the point between the rollers, and as the chase passes on through and between the rollers the rear portion of the yielding frame is depressed while the forward portion of the yielding frame, together with the card, is forced away from the type by the action of the rear springs S2. In this connection it will also be noted that the shaft 52 which extends through the slots 5! in the side frame members of the type chase 45 maintains this yielding frame in proper alignment with the type and the chase proper, so as to prevent any side slip or blurring of the print on the card being printed. In this connection it will also be noted that the operator of the device may View the card without entirely removing it therefrom, so as to determine the suiciency of the ink, and if necessary the type may be re-inked and the card returned to its original registering alignment with the type without removing the card from between the pressure plate 65 and the yielding card supporting frame 54. This is accomplished by engaging the free ends of the card supporting frame 54 and impinging it against the pressure plate and pivoting or raising both these frames together about their common axis or shaft 5l)v to the position shown in Fig. l2 of the drawings, where a complete view of the printed card may be had, and re-inking and reprinting of the card secured if neecssary, by passing the chase again through the rollers. This may be accomplished without removing the card or dislocating it with respect to registering alignment with the type, or disturbing the rst position which it occupied with respect to the type.
It will also be noted that by reason of the construction of my improved printing device, a longer chase or type frame of any length may be substituted for the one shown in the drawings, and run between the rollers, thereby making it possible to make show cards or posters of relatively any length. It will also be noted that by folding the legs S against and parallel to the guide frames 3l these frames may be pivoted and folded intoa vertical position and the type chase inserted therebetween, so as to place the device a compact and portable form, as shown in Fig. of the drawings.
The printing device described in Figs. l to 13 inclusive is also especially adapted for making embossed or depressed lettering or designs on leather, paper or cardboard, or in fact any flexible material requiring such lettering or embossing. The reason for this being that the pressure exerted on the material being thus embossed or de-v pressed is fixed and uniform by reason of therollers having stationary or fixed pivots and a uniform fixed pressure is exerted on the typel in all cases Where the surface of the type occupies the same plane. All that is necessary to make the device operable for the purpose of embossing letters or designs is to provide letters or designs which have a sharp outer edge with a concave surface between the sharp edges and substitute these style of letters for the ones disclosed in the type cha-se of the drawings.
In the modified form of my invention as shown in Figs. 14 to 20 inclusive, I have provided a novel arrangement whereby the rollers may be adjusted with respect to each other so as to take care of show cards to be printed of different thicknesses. With this arrangement any thickness may be printed, from relatively thin paper to relatively thick cardboard. 'Ihe parts referred to in this modified form carry the same references as they do in Figs. 1 to 13 inclusive, where they perform substantially the same function. In this modified form the side plate members 22 are vertically and relatively adjustable with respect to the relatively stationary side frame members 15. Each of these side frame members are provided with vertical guide bars '56 which are secured thereto by means of bolts 11 and spacer rods TI. The roller 30 is journalled in the side plates 22 and is provided with the operating handle generally indioated by the reference character 34. The lower roller 28 is journalled in the stationary side frame members 'i5 in any suitable manner. The upper ends of the plates are held in spaced relation by the spacer rod 23 and the lower ends of the plates are spaced apart by spacer rods 38. Each of the stationary frame members have two spaced apart vertical slots on the upper ends thereof,
as shown at 78, so as to permit the spacer rods 38- to move vertically therethrough With the side plates 22 so that the upper roller 3G may be relatively adjusted With respect to the lower roller. Each of the lower spacer rods 38 are provided, adjacent each of the plates 22, with extension springs '19, and have their lower ends secured to Cil spacer rods l5' extending between the stationary plates 15. Each of the side plate members 22 are provided with a semi-circular cut-out portion in the center lower edge thereof, as shown at 88, which are adapted to be engaged by eccentric disks Si secured to and mounted eccentrically of and on a shaft 82. The shaft B2 and one of the disks is secured to a lever 83 which is adapted to actuate the eccentrics on the opposite sides for elevating the side plate members 22 vertically, thereby adjusting the upper roller 30 with respect to the lower roller. This lever 83 is adapted to engage a notched arcuate-toothed rack 84 secured to one of the side plate members 22 for locking the lever in various positions of adjustment, and to thereby adjust the upper roller to various distances with respect to the lower roller so that the rollers will exert the proper pressure on the type chase previously described, for eiciently and accurately printing different thicknesses of cardboard or paper.
From the above description 'it will be readily seen that I have provided a simple, compact and eciently operable device which is not only capable of printing display cards of a variety of sizes, but also one in which embossed or depressed letters or designs may be transferred to any yieldable material such as leather, paper or cardboard, and the like, without the aid of a skilled artisan.
While in the above specification I have described one embodiment and one modification of the same, it will of course, be understood that such other modications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, an idle roller journalled on said frame, a guide frame pivoted to said main frame for horizontal alignment with the upper surface of said idle roller and for angular non-operative relation, a driving roller mounted in said main frame, and a type chase adapted to be guided horizontally through said rollers by said guide frame.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a main frame, a lower idle roller journalled in said main frame, a vertically spaced apart driving roller mounted in said frame above said idle roller, guide frames pivoted to the opposite sides of said main frame adjacent said lower roller for varying angular relations to each other and to the main frame, and a longitudinally movable type chase adapted to be guided between said rollers by said guide frame.
3. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, rollers journalled on said frame, a type chase adapted to be moved between said rollers including a metal casing having side walls, there being vertical slots in one end of said side walls, a vertically movable shaft mounted in said slots, a card supporting frame pivoted to said shaft, a friction plate pivoted to said shaft, and yielding means for supporting said card supporting frame and said friction plate in said type chase whereby said friction plate engages one of said rollers for depressing said friction plate and said card supporting frame downwardly against the action of said yielding means as the type chase is moved between said rollers. l
4. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a type chase adapted to be moved longitudinally of said frame including a metal casing having side walls, springs mounted in the corners of said casing, a card supporting frame mounted on saidsprings, means for guiding said card supporting frame vertically in said casing, a plate pivoted to said card supporting frame, and means for depressing said plate and card supporting frame vertically in said casing as said chase is moved longitudinally of said frame.
5. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a type chase adapted to move longitudinally of said frame including a type hold, a yieldable card supporting frame mounted in said type holder, means for vertically guiding said card supporting frame in its movement with respect to said type holder, a plate pivoted to said card supporting frame and yieldable therewith with respect to said type holder, and means mounted on said main frame and adapted to engage said plate for longitudinally moving said type chase with respect to said frame and depressing said card supporting frame with respect to said type holder.
6. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a removable and longitudinally movable type chase mounted on 'said frame, means for guiding said chase longitudinally of said frame said chase comprising a metal bo-xlike structure, printed characters mounted in said boxlike structure, a card supporting frame yieldably mounted in said boxlike structure, means for guiding said card supporting frame in its yielding movement, a pressure plate pivoted to said card supporting frame and yieldable therewith, and means mounted on said main frame and engageable with said pressure plate for moving said type chase longitudinally of said frame and depressing said card supporting frame and pressure plate in a direction toward the type in said boxlike structure.
7. A printing device having a central frame portion, a pair of rollers journalled therein, lateral frame portions pivotally connected vwith the central portion and foldable towards and away from each other, guide ledges on said lateral frame portions, and a chase adapted to be frictionally engaged by and advanced between said rollers while it is supported on the guide ledges when the lateral frame portions are extended.
8. A printing device having a central frame structure, lateral extensions therefor foldably connected therewith toward and away from horizontally alined positions, a chase, and means for conveying the chase under pressure over the alined extensions and frame structure.

A chase for a printing device, comprising a support, a type frame removably mounted on said support, means for supporting a sheet in operative position with respect to the type carried by said type frame, means for supporting said sheet supporting means for yieldable movement in a direction normal to the plane of the face of the type, and a pressure plate co-operating with said sheet supporting means and movable therewith for transmitting pressure to said sheet supporting means and the sheet carried thereby and for maintaining the sheet against displacement.
15. A chase for a printing device, comprising a support, a type frame removably mounted on said support, means for supporting a sheet in operative position with respect to the type carried by said type frame, means for supporting said sheet supporting means for yieldable movement in a direction normal to the plane of the face of the type, a pressure plate co-operating with said sheet supporting means and movable therewith for transmitting pressure to said sheet supporting means and the sheet carried thereby and for maintaining the sheet against displacement, and means for adjusting said type frame on said support in accordance with the thickness of the sheet being printed upon.`
16. A chase for a printing device, comprising a support, a type frame removably mounted on said support, a marginal sheet supporting frame cooperating with said type frame, yieldable means extending transversely across said marginal frame at intervals and in alinement with the spaces between the type, means for supporting said sheet supporting means for yieldable movement in a direction normal to the plane of the face of the type, and a, pressure plate (zo-operating with said sheet supporting means and movable therewith for transmitting pressure to said sheet supporting means and the sheet carried thereby and for maintaining the sheet against displacement.
17. A chase for a printing device, comprising a support, a type trame removably mounted on said support, a marginal sheet supporting frame co-operating with said type frame, a plurality of resilient `members extending transversely across ksaid marginal frame at intervals and adjustably secured thereto at their ends to permit oi their alnement with the spa/ces between the type when the same are separated varying distances, means for supporting said marginal frame for yieldable movement in a direction normal to the plane of the face of the type, and a pressure plate co-operating with said sheet supporting means and movable therewith for transmitting pressure t said sheet supporting means and the sheetcarried thereby and 'for maintaining the sheet against displacement.
18. A chase for a printing device, comprisinga support, a type frame removably mounted on said support, a sha-it mounted for bodily movement in said type frame, means hinged at one edge to said shaft for supporting a sheet in operative position with respect to the type carried by said type frame, a plurality of springs Jior'supporting said sheet supporting means and said shaft for yield-able movement in a direction normal to the plane of the face of the type, and a pressure plate hinged to said shaft and co-operating with said sheet supporting means and movable therewith for transmitting pressure to said sheet supporting means and the sheet carried thereby and for maintaining the sheet against displacement.
19. A printing device, comprising a main frame, an idle roller journalled in said main frame, a lateral extension forsaid main frame foldable to horizontal and vertical positions, a supplemental frame mounted for vertical sliding movement on said 'main frame, a drive roller journalled in said supplemental frame in spaced parallel relation above said idle rolier, means for rotating said drive roller, a chase adapted to be frictionally engaged by said rollers and advanced therebetween while it is supported by said lateral extension, said chase embodying a type holder and means for supporting a sheet to be printed in operative position with respect thereto, and means for moving said supplemental frame vertically on said main frame to adjust the position of said drive roller with respect to said idle roller in accordance with the thickness of the sheet to be printed.
20. A printing device having a main frame, an idle roller journalled in said main frame, a-

21. A printing device having amain frame, an idle roller journalled in said main frame, a lateral extension for said main frame foldable to horizontal and vertical position, a supplemental frame mounted for vertical sliding movement on said main frame, a drive roller journalled in said supplemental frame in spaced parallel relation above said idle roller, means for rotating said drive roller, a chase adapted to be frictionally engaged by said rollers and advanced therebetween while it is supported by said lateral extension, said chase embodying a. type holder and means for supporting a sheet to be printed in operative position with respect thereto, means for moving said supplemental frame vertically on said main frame to adjust the position of said drive roller with respect to said idle roller in accordance with the thickness of the sheet to oe printed, and yieldable means for preventing the displacement of said supplemental frame from said main frame.
22.
