lApplicatiolfi filed March 3y 1926. Serial No. 91,869.
struction anduoperation. of devices of theV character described, to providea holder to which a pad or tablet ofpaper may be readily applied and secured, to provide a ruling attachment and scales whereby the paper maybe marked, lined or ruled as desired, and, further to provide a ydetachable cover memberwhereby written matter on the pad may be concealed by the cover or disclosed by transverse movement for the purpose of permitting study in memory work as in lschool work, atfhome, or otherwise.
One form 'which myv invention mayassume is exemplified vin the accompanying drawing, in which- Y g Fig. 1 is a lan view of aholder showing the paper pac thereon.` i
Fig. 2 is `a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 .s a perspective view of the slotted tubemwhereby one of the rulers is supported.
Fig. l is a cross-section on line IVe-IV, Fig. 1. v
Referring to the drawings in detail and particularlyFigs. 1 and 2, A Aindicates a basemember or'ho'lder constructed of wood or any other suitable material. This base or holder ispreferably rectangular in shape as shown, and it serves the lpurpose of supporting and securing .a pad or paper such as indicatedat 3. Extending yunder the upper end ofthe holder is a strip of steel or like material which is suitably secured to the holder. This steel is longer than the width of the base so as to provide two projecting ends as indicated at 2 2'. Carried by the projecting ends are upwardly extending threaded bolts 3-3 and heads or bolts 4.
Adapted to be placed on top of the holder is a tablet or number of sheets of paper. such as indicated at 5, and adapted to secure the pad -of paper to the holder is a cross-bar 6, the ends of which are perforated to pass over the bolts 3 so that the bar may be clamped on top of the paper by means of the nuts 4. The crossbar 6 is graduated on one edge as at 7 to form a scale, the function of which will hereinafter' be described. Extending upwardly adjacent the ends of the cross-bar or scale just referred to are a pair of posts 8 -8 on the upper end-s of ofv the present inventionv is to on the holder A.' Aand ruling device in'position 1,600,545 f PATENT o-FFICET.
which is vpermanently secured a vrod 9. 1
Slida-bly and turnably mounted on the rod *is a tube 10, see Figs. 1, 2 and 3, andsecured to the central portion of the tubeis a sleeve member 11, on the forward sideof.,l
which is formed a pairof projecting-hinge lugs 121-12.
Disposed at right angles tothe scale ory l rule 6 is a'second rule 13 which is graduated Yas :at 14.' Attached to the upperend of this..
rule is a'. bracket plate 15 and' formed vthere-r on is a pair of hinge'lugs V 16 whichV are 'adapted to extendA between the hinge lugs 12 on kthe sleeve 11. A pin or rod passes through the respective hinging lugs Vas shown at 17 and pivotal movement of the rule 13I is thus permittedwvith relati-on to.`
the rule 6 so that `the rule .13 will always lie flat on top of the padfor tablet 5, regardless of the number of sheets of paper placed j By referring to Fig. y3, it will be noted that the tube 11 is slotted at opposite ends as indicated at 19 and 20. These slots extend to the sleeve 11 and they permity sliding.
movement of the tube from the central'position shown in Fig. 1 to either side vof the central `position to a point where oneend or the other of the `bushing l1 will engage the posts 8. At this point either edge of the rule 13 will line up with the outer edges of the paper and further movement isgac.
cordingly not required... The stopping 'of theV slots at this pointl is of further impor-v tance as it prevents disengagement or vloss of the parts accidentally or otherwise. f i
Slots 19 straddlethe posts 8 when the tube 'i and the rule 13 are moved, laterally across the pad and it is mainly for this reason that they are provided, otherwise the tube pivots on the rod, and, in fact, it also pivots when moved laterally, as the width of the slot ruled lines may be measured or spaced apart by using the scale 7. The ruled lines may be drawnalong either edge of the rule 13 or by inserting the pencil in the ferrule 22' which is slidable from end to end in the slot 23 formed in the rule 13. Thisvferrule may also be used for lining or ruling the paper horizontally, `the distance-between the ruled worlL 1n column 'formation and concealed or un-V lines, if desired, being measured on vthe scale 14.
The device as a whole may be used for otice work, school work or vthe like, but preferably `for school work as it may be used in a number of studies. It will 'also be noted Vthat the rule 13 is provided with a pair of spring clips such as shown at 24. 'A cover member indicated by dotted lines at 25 may be inserted under the clipsV and retained. thereby, and this cover may be used in connection with memory studies, for instance, the pad may contain written matter which it is desired tomemorize. In that case the rule 18 carryingthe cover member 25 is moved laterally to cover up the work and the student repeats the written matter by memory, but, if unable to do so, may disclose the work by moving the rule and cover laterally to uncover the same.
The device may also be` used to advantage in the study of geometry and trigonometry as it materially aids in drawing numerous figures and symbols required. For memory study itis obvious that the device may be used both for elementary and advanced For instance, words may be written covered as desired by lateral movement of the rule and cover member, this being of partcular advantage in teaching shorthand, spelling, foreign languages l and even in learning the multiplication'table as in elementary school worln It it is desiredY to renew the pad or sheets of paper mounted on the holder A, it is only necessary to release the nuts 4 and to lift the cross-bar or rule 6 vertically out of engage*- mentwith the posts.. The stubs of paper remaining are removed and a new pad is inserted. The rule is then replaced and the nuts applied and tightened to securely hold the pad.
The entire device is exceedingly simple in substantial construction and while certain features thereof are more or less specifically described and illustrated changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims to suit varying conditions and the judgment and experience of the manufacturer.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A ydevice of the character described comprising a holder, a detachable clamping bar mounted transversely thereon and .adapted to clampa pad of paper on the holder, arod supported by the bar and elevated'with relation thereto, a sleeveslidable longitudi-v nally on the bar and also turnable thereon,
and a ruler hingedly secured to the sleeve and disposed bar.
2. Adevice or' the character described at right angles to the clamping comprising a rectangular shaped plate-like holder, a pair of threaded bolts at one end thereof, said bolts being disposed at the corners of, the holder, a clamping'b'ar disposed transversely of the holder, and having perforated ends to pass over the threaded bolts, clamping nuts carried by said bolts and adapted to force the clamping bar downwardly against the holder to clamp and secure a pad of paper, a pair of posts on the clamping bar one at each end thereof, a rod gitudinal movement of the sleeve on the rod to move the rule transversely of the pad and said sleeve being also turnable on the rod.
