MUSIC-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,834,. dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed October 6, 1894:. Serial No. 525,135- (NO model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS B. BUOKLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Music Supports; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to music rests or supports, it also being applicable for other purposes, and among the objects in view is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device adapted to support sheet music, music books, manuscript, stenographers notes, &c., in any desired inclined position, and said device being adapted to be compactly folded together so as to occupy but little space when not in use, and with the above and other objects in view all of which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing in dotted lines a music book as clamped in position. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the device seen in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the foot piece or rest provided with the spring clamping'fingers, plates, or arms, showing the latter in full lines in their clamping position, and in dotted lines in their non-extended position. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the entire device when in its foldedup position.
In carrying out my invention I provide the section 1 against which the matter to be supported is placed, said section 1 being of rectangular shape and comprising the lower section 2 and the upper section 3 which are suitablyhinged together, preferably by means of hinges 4 secured to the ends of the sections 2, 3, so as to permit the section 3 folding down upon the section 2. By placing the hinges at the ends instead of upon the face of the sections, the same do not in any way interfere with the matter and the section 3 may lie flat against the face of section 2 when folded down.
5 indicates a section which is adapted to rest upon any suitable support as a table or the like and it is hinged to the section 2 by means of hinges 6 arranged at the ends so as to permit the said section 5 folding flat against the rear face of the section 2.
The three sections, 2,3, 5 are made of practically the same depth so that when the device is folded, said sections lie with their edges practically flush or on a line with each other as seen in Fig, 5, and whereby the space taken up by the device when folded is reduced to a minimum.
7 indicates a foot piece or rest which is jointed or hinged to the section 2 by means of curved links 8 secured to the ends of the foot piece 7 and the section 2. I make the links 8 curved in order to enable the said foot piece 7 to fold up over the section 3 when the latter lies upon the section 2 to thusreuder the compactness of the device still more attainable. The foot piece is provided. at each end with a laterally extending pin 8* against which thelower edge of the curved links abut when the foot piece is in a position at right angles to the back piece or section 2 and thus prevent said foot piece from turning from its proper position. This is an important feature of my invention.
In order to hold the back section 1 in different inclined positions, Iprovide the section 5 with a rod 9 which is notched as at 10, and also provide a plate 11 pivotally connected at one end to a staple 12 secured to the edge 13 of the section 2 and the opposite end of the plate 11 being provided with an opening lat through which the rod 9 passes loosely. The plate '11 is adapted by gravity to normally engage the notches of the rod 9, and said plate 11 is at its pivotal end bent over upon itself and then upwardly as at 15 to provide a finger operating portion.
It will be seen that by pressing the finger againstthe portion 15, the plate may be raised just enough to cause the edge 16 of the opening to free the notch of the rod 9 and then the section 1 may be moved either forwardly or backwardly to cause it to assume diflerent inclinations. WVhen it is at the desired inclination, the portion 15 is released and the plate 11 drops by gravity to cause the edge 16 to engage the notch of the rod 9.
For the purpose of affording a means for securely holding the music sheets, books, manuscript, &c., upon the device, I provide bowed or curved spring fingers or arms 17 which are pivotally secured at one end to the edge 18 ot' the foot piece, and their opposite ends being bent upwardly as at 19 so as not to injure the matter when said fingers are in their clamping position.
When the fingers are not in use, they are sprung back so as to lie in, the dotted line position seen in Fig. 4, and when said fingers are to be used, they are swung upon their pivots into the full line position seen in Fig. 4 in which position the ends 19 clamp the matter as seen in Fig. 1 and hold it securely in a spread-open position.
The edge 18 of the foot piece is preferably provided with a metallic strip 20 through which the pivot pins of the plates or fingers 17 extend into the foot piece. The strip 20 is depressed as at 21 to receive the bent ends 19 ot' the fingers.
My device as will be seen possesses advantages over the ordinary devices of this character in that it maybe very compactly folded and occupy but little space; has means for holding the matter in a secure position upon the device, and also has means for readily and quickly adjusting and holding the back in any desired inclined position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the sections 2, 3 hinged together at their adjacent longitudinal edges and being of approximately the same width, said section 3 being adaptedto fold down upon the front face of section 2, the section 5 hinged to section 2 the foot-piece 7 hinged to the section 2, curved links pivotally connected at one end to the outer or lateral edge of the section 2 and at the opposite end to the like edge of the foot-piece, the curvature of the links being such as to permit the foot-piece to fold up and against the rear face of section 3 when the latter is folded down on section 2, a rod 9 secured to section 5 and notched, a plate 11 having a perforation at one end through which said rod 9 loosely passes and adapted to engage the notches, and the opposite end of the plate being bent over and having a projecting finger-operating portion 15 and a staple or loop seen red to section 2 and engaging the bent portion of the plate, as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
