To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALICE BOLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

This invention relates generally to office equipments, but more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in copy holders.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a copy holder with a movable extension so that it may be used in connection with the ordinary size stenographers note book, and also with legal size paper, and which will bring the copy in front of the operator. I

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for mounting the holder proper upon the supporting bracket.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple, strong, durable, and extremely inexpensive construction, and one which will be efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. v

with these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters are used to designate like parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device constructed in accordance with this invention, showing it applied to the upright standard of an ordinary desk telephone, and having an ordinary stenographers note book clamped to the same;

In the embodiment illustrated, the numeral l designates an upright supporting post or standard, to which is attached a twopart clamp 2. This post 1 may be the post of an ordinary desk telephone, or it may be constructed especially for the purpose of supporting this bracket. One of the sections of the clamp 2 is provided at its inner end with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined arm 8, to the upper end of which is attached one end of a horizontally extending arm or bracket a. Extending upwardly from the upper edge of the intermediate portion of the bracket 4; is a T-shaped supporting member 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The opposite ends of the horizontal portions of the bracket a are provided with suitable apertures which receive clamping bolts 6 and 7.

The reference numeral 8 designates the bed plate of the device which is preferably of rectangular configuration and provided with apertures 9 and 10, the latter being arranged in transverse alinement at a point between the ends of the plate. These apertures 9 and 10 are spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the clamping bolts 6 and 7 of the bracket 4. so as to receive the same when said plate is attached to said bracket. When attached in this manner, the plate 8 will be disposed in a substantially upright but inclined position so that a person may readily read from the copy paper placed thereon in a manner to be hereinafter described.

Struck upwardly or forwardly from the lower end of the plate 8 at one corner thereof is a resil f'ent finger or clip 11, while eX- tending longitudinally from the diagonally opposite and upper corner of the same, is an ear 11, the upper and outermost corner of which is curved upwardly to form a stop 12. An ordinary stenographers note book or other comparatively small size sheet of paper may be clamped under the finger 11, while the upper end of the paper is prevented from falling in an angular direction, if not entirely off of the plate 8, by the inner edge of the ear 11.

When it is desired to clamp a legal or other comparatively large size sheet of copy paper upon the bed plate, it must necessarily be extended in length so that the up- 4 per and lower ends of the paper will not curl or drop downwardly due to its weight. This is done by swinging the plate out'of its normal substantially upright position into an angular position. Necessarily, the bolt 7 must be removed in order to do this. The plate will then swing upon the bolt 6 as a pivot. After this adjustment has been made, the bracket 4: and plate 8 are again locked together by inserting the bolt 7 into an aperture 13 arranged in the plate 8 a short distance below the aperture 10 and spaced imvardly from the adjacent edge.

Pivoted to the remaining upper corner of the plate 8 is a triangular-shaped supporting plate or extension 14. As clearly shown by the drawings, this extension 14L is substantially eccentrically mounted so that when it is in its normal position its rightangular edges will coincide with the rightangular edges of the last mentioned corner of the plate 8. WVhen, however, the extension 14: is swung around its pivot out of normal position the other edge of the same will be disposed a considerable distance away from the corner of the plate. The legal sized sheet of copy paper may then be placed upon the plate and extension 14, which, when in this position, is long enough to support the upper and lower ends and prevent the same from curling or falling downwardly. The paper is clamped or retained in place upon the device in a manner similar to that explained heretofore, the stop 12 preventing the paper from falling angular-1y off of the plate, while the clip 11 prevents it from sliding downwardly. The T-shaped member 5, which extends upwardly from the intermediate portion of the bracket 4 bears upon the under side of the upper end of the plate 8 and effectively supports the same. lVithout this member 5, the plate 8 would probably wabble and move out of its inclined position when pressed upon.

As various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a bracket having means for attachment to a support, a rectangular bed plate attached to said bracket and movable from an inclined upright position to an angular position thereto, a stop and a clip at diametrically opposite corners of said plate, and a movable extension at the remaining upper corner adapted to be extended when said plate is in its angular position.

2. A device of the class described comprising a bracket having means for attach ment to a support, a rectangular bed plate attached to said bracket and movable from an inclined upright position to an angular position thereto, a clip at one of the lower corners of said plate, a stop at the diametrically opposite and one of the upper corners of the latter, and a triangular extension eccentrically mounted at the remaining upper corner of said plate and adapted to be extended when the latter is in its angular position. 7

3. A device of the class described comprising a bracket having means for attachment'to' a support and including a horizontally extending arm, a T-shaped member extending from the intermediate portion of one edge of said arm, a rectangular bed plate pivoted at one of its sides at a point between its ends to one end of said arm and movable from an inclined upright position to an angular position, means for fixing the other side of said plate to the other end of said arm, a stop and a clip at diametrically opposite corners of said plate, and a movable extension at the remaining upper corner of said plate adapted to be extended when the latter is in its angular position.
