Be it known that I, ORIN \V. CATLIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of J eiferson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Music- Leaf Turner, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in music-leaf turners; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and simple device adapted to support a book or sheets of music in a convenient manner and the leaves of the same in such position as to be readily turned, and thus avoid all fumbling and loss of time.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description ..and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a music or leaf turner c011- structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line a: a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the leaf-turning arms. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the thumb-lever.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates the inclined rear wall of the support or holder, which it will be understood is provided with a suitable base or supportin g-standard 2, located at the rear side thereof.

5 designates a pair of springholding-arms, which extend in front of the backboard 1, are coiled near their lower ends, and bent to pivotally embrace screws 6, extending into the backboard. The holding-arms 5 may be swung toward the edges of the backboard, over to the front of the backboard, or to the lower edge of the same, as may be desired, in order to conform to different books, or when over to the edge are out of the way entirely and are provided with rubber friction-blocks 3. Immediately above the lower edge of the backboard there is inserted a pair of supporting-pegs 7, preferably covered with rubber, upon which books may be supported. Atthe longitudinal center of the backboard and near the lower edge of the same an opening 8 is formed, the same being of oblong shape and vertically disposed. A vertical pin 9 is located in the opening and has its ends terminating in plates 10 at the upper and lower ends of the openin A recess 11 extends at each side of the base of the opening, and at one side thereof is extended vertically at its extremity, as shown at 12. The upper edges of these recesses, whi are l cated in a horizontal plane above the studs 7, are each provided with a turn-button 13, designed to turn within the recess or out from the same, and in the latter position to serve as a support for books of diminutive size, such as small prayer-books, hymnals, the.

14 designates a series of L-shaped leafturning arms, the same being located in the recesses 11 and 12 and terminating at their inner ends in eyes 15, through which the pin 9 passes. lVashers 16 are interposed between each of theleaf-turnin g arms and also mounted on the pin, and a coiled spring 17, mounted upon the pin, bears upon the upper washer of the series, and thus yieldingly compresses the series of washers and arms. As shown in Fig. 3, the leaf-turning arms may each be formed in two sectionsthat is, with an inner section 19 and an outer L-shaped section 20-the two being connected by keepers 21, one of which is formed on each L-shaped section, so that the lengths of the arms may be increased or diminished to suit various sizes of pages or leaves of the book; but in either instance, whether formed extensible or not, and I prefer the latter to the number ordinarily used for sheet-music the bent ends of the arms are slotted, as at 22, to receive the leaves or pages of a book or sheet of music, and said arms are graduated in size, so as to lie one within the other within the recesses 11 and 12.

the swinging of the arms 5 the lower edge of the sheets are inserted into the slots of the leaf-turning arms, as will be readily understood; or said arms may be inserted at various points within the book, so that the same may be turned to different points of reference, as when used in a sermon, lecture, the.

an arm 27, extending up in the back of the recess 11,and at its outer end bent and shaped to form a depending thumb-plate 28. lVhen the book has been mounted in position and the leaves thereof in engagement, a pressure upon the thumb-lever serves to force the arm of the thumb-lever against the series of leafturning arms, and thus press them out, whereby they facilitate the grasping of the same by the fingers of the user, and one sheet or the entire series may be turned. lhethumblever is especially useful in raising the leafturning arms from the slot in which they rest when not in use.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a music-leaf turner, the combination, with the backboard having a holder and a pin mounted on the backboard,- of a series of graduated L-shaped slotted and perforated leaf-turning arms, washers interposed between and above the arms and mounted upon the pin, a spring mounted upon the pin and bearing on the washers, and a lever pivoted upon the backboard and terminating at one end in an arm bearing against and adapted to operate the leaf-turning arm and at its outer end in a thumb-plate depending below the arm, substantially as specified.

2. In a music-leaf turner, the combination, with the backboard having the oblong recess 8 vertically disposed, the horizontally and vertically disposed recesses 11 and 12, the bearing-pin 9, mounted in the recess 8,

and the plates 10, located at the upper and substantially .as specified.
