To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Lawnnnon J. Ross, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in music leaf turners, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, effective and inexpensive device of this character which maybe readily attached to an ordinary music rack or rack of a piano, and whereby the sheets of music may be conveniently turned in proper succession and turned back for the purpose of repeating.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing having a depending flange 2 at the front edge thereof from which extends an angular arm 3, the upright portion of which forms a clamping member 4. Arranged between the rear wall 1 of the casing and the member 4 is a cooperating clamping head or member 5 carried by clamping screws 6 provided with adjusting nuts 7, said nuts be ing held between the rear wall of the casing and bearing plates or pieces 8 from longitudinal movement and provided with sockets or apertures 9 for the reception of keys or operating devices by which they may be manipulated to adjust the head 5. The screws 6 are j ournaled in the rear wall of the casing and the bearing plates or pieces 8, and openings 10 are provided in the top wall f the casing for giving convenient access to the nuts. The heads 4 and 5 are adapted to clamp the device to a rack 11, which may be inserted between the casing 1 and arm 3.

A rod 12 is revolubly mounted in the casing and proj ects upwardly therefrom, and arranged upon this red within the casing are gears 13 and 14, the former being keyed to and the latter loosely mounted upon the rod. The gears are respectively arranged between the bottom and top walls of the casing and an intermediate partition plate 15, whereby they are held in proper spaced relation. Meshing with the gears are transverse arranged rack bars 16 and 17 which travel in con tact with friction rolls 18, and attached to said racks by slot and pin pivotal connections 19 are pivoted operat ing levers 20 and 21 projecting through and movable in slots in the front wall of the casing.

The rod 12 carries leaf clamping and turning mem bers 22 and 23, each comprising parallel vertical strips 24 and 25 connected at their lower ends, the strip 25 being free at its upper end to form a finger piece 26, and constituting a clamping member for clamping the inserted edge of the sheet against the strip 24. The strips 24 and 25 are preferably made of spring metal, so that the clamping strip 25 may have the proper degree of resiliency. To the stationary or body strip 24 are attached arms 27, the arms of the turning member 22 being rigidly connected with the rod 12, while the corresponding arms of the turnii'lg member 23 are formed with bearings 28 pivotally connecting it to swing freely on and independent of said rod. At its lower end the member 23 is further provided with an arm or extension 29 extending downward through a segmental slot 30 formed in the top plate of the casing concentric with the rod 12, the lower end of said arm or extension 29 being rigidly connected with the gear 14. By this construction it will be understood that when the lever 20 is operated in one direction or the other the rack and pinion associated therewith will turn the rod 12 and left hand turning member 22, while upon the operation of the lever 21 the gear 1 1 actuated thereby will swing the right hand turning member 23 independently of the rod and member 22.

Arranged at the rear of the rod 12 is a sheet clamping device or holder 31 comprising a looped piece of wire, the parallel arms 32 and 33 of which are connected at their upper ends by a rearwardly bent return portion 34 as shown in Fig. 8.and at their lower ends are suitably attached to a base 35 formed with a longitudinal slot 36 for the reception of clamping screw 37 carried by the base, whereby the said sheet clamping mem ber or holder may be adjusted toward and from the rod. The base 35 is preferably provided with laterally projecting extensions 38 operating as stays to firmly support the holder in position. The return bend 34 provides an operating or finger portion by which the holder 31 may be moved rearwardly to permit of the ready insertion of the book or sheets of music between the same and the rod 12. The upper arm of the turning member 22 is flattened to form a clamping face or auxiliary clamping member 39 with which cooperates a spring clip or clamping member ll) attached to the rod or to the rear end of said arm. This construction is designed to provide a clamp for securing single sheet music and the sheets of three sheet music to the member 22, so that the sheet of music may be held and turned. In order to force the spring clip 10 against the clamping member 39 an opcrating device 41 is provided and comprises a stem journaled in the rod 12 and formed at its front and rear ends with a head 42 and a milled knob 43. By

turning the knob 43 in one direction or the other the head 42, which serves the function of a cam, may be moved into and out of engagement with the clip to force the same toward or allow it to move it away from the clamping face 39.

To use the device for turning a piece of music consisting of two covers andan inside sheet, the music sheet is disposed with its center or point of fold between the rod 12 and arms 32 and 33 of the holder 31, and the first leaf is engaged with the turning device 22, while the second leaf is engaged with the turning device 23. By then moving the levers 20 and 21 to the left the rack and pinion mechanism will adjust the turning devices to the right, and by a reverse movement of said levers the turning devices may be successively adjusted to the left to turn the music sheets. In rising the device for turning three sheet music, the cover is clamped to the rod in the manner described, and the single intermediate sheet engaged with the turning member 22 and held by the clip 40. Single sheet music may be turned by using the turning member 22 in an obvious manner, the sheet being clamped in said member and held by the clip 40 From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of operation of my invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a simple and effective form of device which is readily applicable to any ordinary music or piano rack and is adapted to be readily and conveniently manipulated to hold and turn the music sheets.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:

1. In a music leaf turner, the combination of a casing, a rod journaled therein and extending upward therefrom,

leaf-turning members respectively fixed to and journaled on the rod, gearing for turning the rod and journaled turning members, and a leaf-holding device arranged in rear of the rod and adjustable toward and from the same.

2. In'a music leaf turner, the combination of a casing, a rod journaled therein and extending upwardly therefrom, a pair of leaf-turning members disposed in parallel relation to the rod and having supporting arms respectively fixed to and revoluble on the rod, gearing for swinging the rod and revoluble turning member, and an auxiliary clamping device at the upper end of one of said turning members.

3. In a music leaf turner, the combination of a casing, a rotary rod journaled therein and extending upwardly therefrom. a leaf holding device arranged in rear of the rod, fast and loose gears on the rod within the casing, leafturning devices, one fixed to and the other revoluble on the rod, the latter named turning device being provided with an extension connected with the loose gear, racks meshing with the gears, and operating devices for actuating the racks.

4.111 a music leaf turner, the combination of a casing, a rotary rod journaled therein and extending upwardly therefrom, leaf-turning devices, one fixed to and the other revoluble on the rod, rack and pinion gearing for swinging the rod and revoluble leaflturning device, a leaf holder arranged in rear of and parallel with the rod and adapted to clamp the center of a sheet therebetween, said leaf holder having a base piece, and means adjustably connecting said base piece with the casing, whereby the leaf holder may be adjusted toward and from the rod.

In a music leaf turner, the combination of a casing, a rotary rod extending upwardly therefrom. a leaf turning member carried by the rod and provided with main clamping members, one of said clamping members being formed at its upper end in rear of the other clamping member with an auxiliary clamping portion, a spring strip cooperating with said auxiliary clamping portion, and a cam journaled on the rod and controlling said strip.
