To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrrr BoYnR, a c1t1-' zen of the United States, and a resident of Bend, in the county of Crook and State of Oregon, have invented an Improvement in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the followlng is a specification.

This invention is an improvement in leaf turners and has particular reference to a device adapted to be attached to a muslcal nstrument and operated without the necessity of the player using his hands.

One of the objects of the present lnvention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the sheet turning arms are succes-.

sively actuated, through the medium of a flexible connection, by a member operated by a knee of the player.

Another object of the invention 1s to construct the turner so that the same may be readily folded so as to require a minimum amount of space and which is inexpensive to manufacture, durable, and effective in use.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expres sions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention showing the same applied to a piano. When the device is used in connection with a piano, as shown in Fig. 1, the same is attached thereto intermediate the ends of and adjacent the usual music rack. The apparatus comprises a base board or plate 5 which is secured in a substantially vertical posi tion to the instrument. This board or plate 5 is preferably rectangular and has extending from its bottom edge intermediate the ends thereof a lateral block 6 in which is vertically mounted a pivot bolt 7.

A pair of cover engaging arms 8 are pivotally mounted in their inner ends on the bolt 7 and adapted to extend in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2, to engage the covers of the music sheets, it being understood that the device may be used either in connection with book or loose sheet music. A pair of sheet turning arms 9 are also pivoted at their inner ends on the bolts 7 and are mounted between the cover engaging arms 8, all of said arms being loosely mounted to permit of independent movement. A thumb screw 11 is mounted upon the bolt 7 and adapted to engage the top arm 8 whereby the arms are detachably held in cooperative relation. These arms 8 and 9 are each preferably made of a fiat piece of metal twisted intermediate its ends as inclicated at 10 to provide an inner portion arranged in a horizontal plane and an outer portion arranged in a vertical plane, so that when the arms are folded one uponthe other the same will occupy a minimum amount of space. Each of the arms 8 and 9 is provided with a slide member 12 also made of a strip of metal and provided at one end with a collar 13 adapted to receive the arm upon which it is mounted. These slides 12 extend laterally from the arms and are adjustable back and forth thereon in order to engage sheets of different sizes so that the same may be readily turned.

One of the arms 9 is provided with a link 14 having one end of a coil spring 15 connected thereto. The other end of the spring 15 is secured to the flexible connection 16 which extends longitudinally of the piano to one end thereof and is mounted in a pulley 17 after which it passes over another pulley 18 arranged below the first-named pulley and then extends underneath of the key-board of the instrument and has its end connected to a horizontally swinging knee swell 19 commonly used on organs. This knee swell 19 is so located as to be readily operated by a knee of the player to exert a pull upon the connection 16 whereby the sheet turning arm 9 to which the spring 15 is connected is swung from a position at the right, as shown in the drawing, to the left so that the sheet of music, engaged by the slide 11, carried by said arm, is turned. The next succeeding sheet turning arm 9 has secured thereto one end of a short flexible connection 20, the other end of which is secured to the adjacent end of the flexible connection 16. The points of attachment of the link 14 and connection 20 with their respective arms 9 is made close to the pivot ends thereof so that only a slight movement of the knee swell 19 will be sufficient to turn said arms. This flexible connection 20 is of such a length that the same will hang loosely before and during the time that the previous arm is turned, and the turning movement of the latter arm will have not effect upon the next succeeding arm. When it is desired to swing the last-named arm the knee swell 19 may be swung farther toward the right, as illustrated, whereupon a pull will be exerted upon the spring 15 and expand the same, which expansion causes a tightening of the flexible connection 20 and a resultant pull upon the arm 9 to which it is secured wlfi'ereupon the same will be swung to the le t.

In order to more effectively operate the sheets the arms 9 may carry small clasps 21 adapted to be secured to said sheets along their bottom edges.

The arm 9 to which the flexible connection 15 is secured has also fastened thereto one end of a connection 22 similar to the connection 16 and which passes over pulleys (similar to the pulleys 17 and 18) at the other end of the instrument and has its other extremity secured to the knee swell 19 whereby said arms 9 may be turned back to the right in order to repeat the music on the sheets to which said arms are secured. The connection 22 is of such length as not to hinder the movement of the arm 9, shown at the right in Fig. 2, to the left when the same is pulled by the connection 20.

I claim v i 1. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having a block extension, a pivot carried by said extension, cover engaging arms connected to said pivot, sheet turning arms also connected to said pivot and interposed between the first named arms, slides extending laterally from said arms and adjustable longitudinally thereof, and flexible connections secured to said sheet'turning arms and adapted to be actuated successively to swing the same about their pivots.

A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having a block extension, a pivot carried by said extension, cover engaging arms connected to said pivot, sheet turning arms also connected to said pivot and interposed between the firstnamed arms, slides extending laterally from said arms and adjustable longitudinally thereof, flexible connections secured to said sheet turning arms and adapted to be actuated successively to swing the same about their pivots, another flexible connection common to the first-named connections, and a pivot member adapted to be operated by a knee of a player to exert a pull on the lastnamed connection whereby the first-named connections are operated.

3. device of the character described, comprising a base plate having a block extension, a pivot-carried by said extension, cover engaging arms connected to said pivot, sheet turning arms also connected to said pivot and interposed between the firstnamed arms, slides extending laterally from said arms and adjustable longitudinally thereof, a spring secured to one of said sheet turning arms, a flexible connection secured to another of said arms, and a flexible element secured to said spring and said connection and adapted to successively operate the arm to which said spring is secured and the arm to which said connection is secured, said spring being expanded upon the operation of the last-named arm.

4. A device of the character described, comprising sheet turning members, a spring secured to one of said sheet turning arms, a flexible connection secured to another of said arms, and a flexible element secured to said spring and said connection and adapted to successively operate the arm to which said spring is secured and the arm to which said connection is secured, said. spring being expanded upon the operation of the lastnamed arm.

5. A device of the character described, comprising leaf turning members, an expansible element connected to one of said elements to actuate the same, a flexible connection for the other member, and means for successively operating said expansible element and said connection, said means being adapted to expand the former whereby to operate the latter.
