MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that PETER H. SAN SoUoi, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, has invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction of music leaf turner applicable to various keyed instruments of the piano and organ type and also to music stands for orchestral use and the like whereby a plurality of leaves of sheet music and particularly loose or intermediate leaves thereof may be successively turned and held in proper position for reading and against displacement through jarring, drafts, and the like; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a. front view of a device embodying the invention showing a loose leaf musical composition in operative relation therewith and with one of the leaves turned or subsequent to the operation of the device.

Figure 3 is a. detail sectional view of the means for holding the spindles with the turning arms in their normal positions and for successively releasing the same to permit of the turning of the leaves.

The apparatus embodies, in addition to any suitable desk or support 10, which may be a music stand or instrument desk or a separate board applicable to either a stand or a desk, upon which in suitable upper and lower bearing brackets 12 and 13 are mounted rocking spindles 14, any desired number of which may be employed, for carrying the leaf turning arms 15. These leaf turning arms which consist of relatively small gauge rods are provided with terminal screw heads consisting of wire or like rods designed to extend vertically or parallel with the outer free edges of the music sheets indicated at 17, and at their inner ends said turning arms furthermore carry clamping tongues 18 designed to engage the inner or hinder edges of the sheets so as toeffectively hold said sheets from displacement by air drafts or otherwise from the desk during the performance of the composition.

At their lower ends the rocker spindles are provided with actuating springs 19 tensioned to swing the turning arms from the right to the left in the direction of progressive performance of the composition and terminally the said spindles are extended to form operating arms 20 which are ter minally disposed in operative relation with triggers which serve to normally hold them in position to maintain the spindle operating arms with the turning arms at the right. The triggers above referred to consist of flat springs 22 secured one above the other on the face of the desk 10 by means of fasteners 21, one terminal of each spring being laterally deflected and formed with an eye 23 in which the extremity of its operating arm may engage. Pressure applied on the laterally deflected terminal in a direction away from the operating arm will serve to release the latter for actuation by its attendant spring. hen it is desired to turn a sheet of the music it is only necessary to actuate the trigger corresponding with the arm to be operated so as to release the latter and permit of the turning of the spindle by means of its actuating spring, so that it may swing the turning arm from its original position at the right to a position at the left as shown in Figure 1. The actuation of these triggers obviously may be effected by a momentary touch of thc finger of the performer and therefore with out withdrawing the hands for any protracted period from the keyboard or the instrument which is being manipulated and hence without the 1088 of time which is ordinarily incident to the manual turning of the leaves of sheet music.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1.
